Page 997…
Today’s Daniel’s page.
And we’re 3/4 of the way through the Montage.
Hope you’ve enjoyed the sneak peek at the letters.
I don’t plan on showing these again…so make sure you check out these last two before they’re gone.
I’ve never really done a montage sequence before. So this has been a lot of fun.
It’s so great seeing the story come together…and I really can’t wait to show you what’s coming up next.
π
Have a great day.
Scott
I am totally loving these letters. π They’re seriously awesome. I’m really glad I’ve started keeping up with this daily or I’d’ve missed them. π
Also–this montage sequence is very fun. π
HAHA… These girls need to get back together so Felicity, Nicole y Anastaj can have some serious girl talk… π
(I didn’t get to see Montage #2 letter… *sulk* ‘cos it was repeating #1 – anyone have a transcript of that?)
I couldn’t read the letter from Daniel, it only shows the one from Felicity to Nicole.
Anyway, this is a freakin’ awesome comic. Some nights when I’m bored, I just start scrolling through the comic again. One day I will buy the books, but school comes first ya know.
making a montage in comics interesting is quite a task, great job pulling it off π
First off, GO CHECK IT NOW, it should have Felicity’s letter up still! At least for another 2 hours.
Second, TWC updates their incentives and voting records 2 hours after Dreamland updates their comic pages. That’s why it seems like it’s repeating.
Like I said to Kelli, TWC updates their voting records and incentive pages 2 hours after Dreamland updates the comic page. Just check back in a few hours and the new one will be up.
You still have a couple hours to see it. TWC doesn’t update until midnight PST, which is two hours after The Dreamland Chronicles updates.
Indeed!
Scott, I would like to point out that in the last 3 days, you’ve gone from being in 23rd place, to 7th. HOLY COW!!!! π
I am sad… I missed the first letter. π
Thus is the power of the vote banner, and awesome incentives.
I missed the first letter as well, which I can live with that…. assuming I’ll get a second chance with the book when it is published!
As always Scott, you have put up a great update that is one of my favorite ways to start the day. Thank you!
– Fr. Maurer
And the new incentive is up!
Alex can’t describe a Centaur? Really? Poor silly boy. π
I thought it was an awesome description! =D Sounds perfectly like Alex, haha XD
I missed the second letter. *sobs* I mostly figured out the frist one, then downloaded from TWC, came on the next and it was the letter to Orion, :(. Oh well, I guess I’ll have decipher it from the comic background if I can.
Awesome letter! That’s THAT little plus in the plot. Now what could be the link between Dan, Nicodemus and Arthurian Legends? tadadaduuuum… more coming soon I guess…
“Animosity and Fear become tenderness and camaraderie”… well, seems Nastajia REALLY didn’t read that second letter. That’s one massacre avoided (more’s the pity too). And now Alexander has more than just his head floating in clouds… honestly this page really made my day!
Yup, as I thought… I completely missed Felicity’s letter. π
*sighs*
Guess I have to wait for the book, so I can read it in the extras… π
*Really does not like TWC right now*
I know, I missed the first one too, but they may be in the book and so far they aren’t all that important to the storyline IMO
You have to understand how brothers operate. If there is a chance for Alex to frustrate and embarrass Daniel, he’ll do it every time. Next, Alex will just say that Daniel sometimes puts his hoof in his mouth.
I just want to put my vote in that I think the mottling effect on the bottom of the page looks really cool. We saw it a bit before the montage. It simulates light filtering through trees that are outside the field of view.
As a street urchin, Felicity would not have known how to read or write. It’s unlikely that these skills are innate in Dreamland creatures because we saw Nastajia studying. But as an agent of Nicodemous, Felicity would have been trained in that and more to become a more effective thief and spy. Security tendencies, self-defense arts, how to defeat the most sophisticated locks, etc. etc. Perhaps even more sophisticated arts like music and theater if she would need to infiltrate as something other than a spy. If you read the Stainless Steel Rat series, it would be similar to what happened to James DeGriz after he was caught by the Special Corps.
I wonder what hidden skills and talents Felicity has?
Arrggghh! I missed yesterday’s letter. π
They will NOT be in the book. They were never intended to be read.
But…I may post the ones you missed over the weekend.
Thank you all.
I know some of you missed Felicity’s and Nicole’s letters.
I may….MAY put them up over the weekend.
But after that…seriously…they’re gone.
So let me know if you’d like me to do that. They will NOT be in the book.
It would be a nice treat if you put the letters up over the weekend. π I can understand about Felicity’s letter, but I’m just curious why you wouldn’t want to put the others in an “extras” section in the book. Or did you put them up just because we’re all badgering the heck out of you about them. lol!! They do give a really neat insight into the characters. Sorry if you answered the question already. O_o I am often too curious for my own good. π
Since the letters are non-canon and just for fun, Scott doesn’t want to put them into the “official” story by including them in a book.
Sounds like lots of people missed the letters, so I’d vote for a one-time make up class!
Took me a bit, but I finally got it. The upper picture of Nastajia and Felicity just hangin’ on the floor shows the transition period between Felicity being bedridden and tomorrow’s standing/walking.
One way to read the last part of today’s comic is the following:
Alex: “Nice to meet you, Orion. I understand you are my ‘true potential.'” π
:crosses fingers: Woo!
But, I’ll be in Nashville…. Hope I have access to the internet for the next week otherwise, I’ll be pretty bored. π
BTW: What’s the recommended reading age for this book? My nephew is like 6~7, whilst his sister is like 11.
aggred…
Is there any kind of dragon referred to in the legends, like Arthur and Nick’s fight sort of crossed over to his world? And I LOVE the light and shadow on Orion’s body, really cool looking.
Welcome to Nashville (where I live).
I have 6 year old boys who like Dreamland. Though they don’t enjoy the “talking and kissing parts”.
I’d think they’d enjoy it but maybe their sister would more.
π
It sounds like you’re pretty adamant on this, Scott, but I think you should reconsider. After all, giving kids a few more pages to actually READ is a good thing. And a young (cat-)lady discussing Alex’s buns is no more risque than most of Nastajia’s wardrobe (or Felicity’s, for that matter), and far less morally ambiguous than the death of the cyclops at the beginning of the story.
My $0.02, FWIW.
π
(P.S. Great story! I love the way you balance the elements: action, drama, humor, romance … Dreamland has it all! π )
Weird … that first smiley was supposed to be winking – π – not sticking his tongue out – π …
*shrug*
*sigh* never mind … I see what I did now …
:\
I really did write these for you all.
NOt to be in the book. Not that there wasn’t going to be something behind there.
But it would have been random words to simulate a letter.
You guys just make more work for me.
>:(
Hmmnn…..several dragons are mentioned through the various accountings of the legends surrounding Arthur. I’m more curious as to where Dan fits in. If Alex is in the role of ‘Arthur’, then Dan would be….
Lancelot? Unlikely. Gawain? Nah. Fisher King? HMMMMMNNNNN…….unable to dream = the lameness of the Fisher King? It seems that Orion is playing the role of Merlin…..Nastajia is Gweniviere…..but of course, not everything lines up quite the same.
I wonder if Dan will include “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” in his research……considering Alex is the ‘protagonist’, it seems much more likely a source material to pull from than “La Morte D’Arthur”…..
Eh. I missed the first one, but it wasn’t too hard to figure out the naming system and recover the URL :p
Really enjoyed reading Daniel’s letter and hoping to see the letter I missed this weekend.
Great montage sequence! Fantastic way to speed up character development and kick forward slow sections of storyline. Great work, Scott!
Ok, I don’t normally post, but I have been a hugh fan for a long time and I had to say, it has really been fantastic of you to give us those letters. They are significant to us readers. That being said, I must make a plea for my 10 year old son. Before dreamland, he would not read, despite being an excellent and intelligent student in every other way. I bought him the first book last year for christmas, and he read it 6 times in one week. Ever since, when he has trouble reading he goes back and reads Dreamland to remember why he started. It is not possible or practical for him to read the comic online, let alone vote to see the letters, but when he found out that they will not be in the books, he was very sad. So I promised him I would plead his case. He says, “Please, please please please please put them in the book, pretty please?!?” I understand if you can’t, but seeing as you have sons yourself, I figured you would get my need to ask for him.
Thank you for all that you do! I suspect it has a larger impact than you know.
And now we get a bit of a taste of The Imaginarium Geographica. First book in the series is “And Here Be Dragons.” From what I’ve listened to thus far (audio book), Arthurian Legend plays a HUGE role in The Archipelago of Dreams (don’t worry Scott, this series reminds me of Dreamland, not the other way around π )
Scott, I think it would be cool if- once the comic is completed in its entirety- you were to release a limited edition “boxed set”, with extras in the last book. The extras should definitely include the letters as they’ve been displayed on TWC.
Maybe Dan is more like Prince Valiant?
scott, speaking on behalf of all those who missed some of the letters it would be great if we could see the letters we missed some how. i know they are not part of your book but they help us (your loyal fans) understand and appreciate the caracters
looking forward to a little romance, dragon-butt whoopin, pattington dancing, and awhole bunch of otherneat things in the next few weeks
I missed the first one!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
tell me someone has been saving them!
I hope you will, I missed the first one and would appreciate it! like kamatu says it’s not important to the storyline, but I have always enjoyed these parts of stories, the back story, the nonchalant actions of the everyday and ordinary. that is how you truly know someone, connect to a character, connect to others.
It looks as if Felicity had some sort of a “growth-spurt” Her physique is more that of a young woman than that of a teen, which she seemed to be in te beginning… Could be symbolism for her “mental growth” after being at death’s doors? Intrigueing..
This montage is EPIC. I am totally in love with the way this har turned out.
I’ve “stolen” a copy of the letters, so that I may read them again while I look through the almost thousand pages so far that I’ve also “stolen”. – I was thinking of translating all the pages to my native language, but haven’t gotten around to make any attempt at it yet. In any case, this needs to go through Scott if I ever get to the point of a possible public display of translated pages, and likely Scott may not even be able to call the shots on that one either …
But in case someone need the letters, and if Scott approves, I can put these up on a dedicated website for everyone to enjoy and unload the bandwidth from this server. I’m sure you’ll all let me know if this is something that I should do, or if someone else is just going to post them to a sharing site …
This is a fantastic web comic, but I can only access it on certain days, I would love to get to read the 2 letters I missed.
Man… I had no idea the letters were somewhere to look at (besides behind the comics)… oh well. I’m going to miss all of them.
I hope so.. I’d like to see them again. maybe Scott should put them up in the gallery after this chapter is done?
Scott, I love the letters and the fact that you put them up for our enjoyment make my day (even if it does make more work). I LOVE the montage and I’m so glad that you included Daniel :D!
The only problem I see with this is that it does defeat the purpose of having a web incentive if someone knows that another person will just copy/save the images and post them elsewhere for everyone to read (frankly, I don’t see the inconvenience of voting at that point, considering you still have to navigate to a different website, but for some people it’s not the inconvenience of voting that’s truly a bother, it’s just that they don’t care enough to take the time to). But, I would like to see them published in some sort of a special edition version of the comic, should Scott ever get to that point.
Awww, don’t be sad Scott. You know we appreciate the extra work you put into this! π
I missed the first letter so I’d definitely like to see it! The one to Orion from Dan at the last part was really funny. I like the montage you’re doing! Wonderfully done! The letters in the back ground add extra depth to it! Keep it up!
Aww… Scott! You can’t disappoint a 10yr boy that learned to read from your books could you? Please please please please! put it in the books! I know it’s a lot of work… make it a collector’s and charge extra or something. I’ll pay a little extra for it. Please!
hahaha! Thanks Scott! We are pests aren’t we, but we most definitely appreciate it!! *offers homemade chocolate chip cookies as thanks!*

You remind me of the ‘Princess Bride’ scene where the boy wants to skip all of the mushy parts. And here we have William Goldman of the 21st century.
– Fr. Maurer
I don’t get to read an comment every day lately, but I’m glad I read a big chunk of montage all at once, it works. Great job Scott, though that’s not surprising anymore, great seems to be normal for you. You’re going to have to learn to do this while leaping across a chasm on a flaming llama or something. Like, raise the bar to great-plus or something.
ROFL!
Flaming llama – not something I’d ever want to see IRL, but funny as heck as a mental image …
π
Woohoo!
Keep voting, folks! We’re up to #4, and Evil Diva is in our sights! And Two Kinds is not out of reach (though Phoenix Requiem probably is … ).
Vote! http://topwebcomics.com/vote/4274/default.aspx
π
Well….with a story like THAT…I’ll definitely have to consider it.
Thank you so very much Pondpixie.
Please tell your son I said hi and thanks for reading.
π
I hope you do reprint the letters. I missed Felicity’s and now I can’t get Daniel’s either. When I try to go to TWC I keep getting an error message. I can’t even vote. It’s getting very frustrating! I’ll try again tomorrow. (Later today, actually, it’s after midnight now.)
That’s kind of odd. What kind of error are you getting?
I agree wholeheartedly. Which is why I haven’t posted anything anywhere. – I’m not in a hurry. To me, these “specials” are not an incentive to vote, I do that anyways, but these “props” give the story much more depths and personality. I would not want to miss any of them.
I love the Pic of Naj and Felicity!
I’m hoping too–The week I’m away on a workshop without access (or time) for a computer is the week you pick to put up four one-day incentives! And on a mumble-0th birthday, too! π &-(
(That last is supposed to be a teary emoticon…)
I missed all but Friday’s letter.
First taste of dreamland? Did Daniel lick the parchment?
I’m a new reader and I absolutely love your comic, but I missed out on the letters…can i read them somewhere? Please?
What about the latecomers ….WAAAAH! :'(
I agree … It would be really good if you could post them somewhere. I only discovered the comic five days ago (somehow I always find the best online things in the middle of exam week – go figure!) and it’s AMAZING! The medium took a while to grow on me, and I don’t have much to compare it to, but I love the story line and everything …
Oh, and is there anyway that you could maybe recycle the vote incentives or something? Some of the earlier ones looked quite fun! π
I’m late. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
