Page 979…
Happy Monday all!
Hope you had a great weekend.
I was asked to do a guest page for the comic Unshelved.
Since Unshelved is about a Library…and therefore a “smart” comic…I was asked to do something “literate”.
Yikes.
I had to review a book. Using Dreamland characters.
Now…my idea of great literature is Spider-Man. And my favorite author? Stan Lee.
So….um…I turned to my WIFE for inspiration and used HER favorite book.
Pride and Prejudice.
So if you’re interested in seeing Nastajia and gang reviewing Pride and Prejudice….check out this two page guest page for the wonderful guys over at Unshelved.
And thank you to all of you who helped out with the creation of this page on Livestream.
Here’s a direct link to that episode.
Β
Now. The question is…
Do you all want to see more of these Livestreams?
If so. Is a few times a week too much?
Also…
Should I do it at SPECIFIC TIMES?
Or just announce it when ready on Twitter?
Β
Please let me know.
And thanks for reading.
Scott
Yay! He’s not all that bad ><
hahaha Alex has a good point XD
Oh, and the book review is too funny xD
Scott,
Yes, I think Livestreams are great, as long as we know a bit ahead of time when they will be. Do you post that info on your twitter account?
I loved your Pride and Predjudice review. Quite in character, too! Remember, you can lead Alexander to great literature, but you can’t make him think! π
The last panel holds my favorite Alex face yet. XD
Oh, and great Pride and Prejudice review. I loved the moral at the end. π
Well, so much for my grand theory of the universe. I thought that when Orion took the sword the second time (after his first attempt to teach Alex), he was told by the sword to drop Alex over the cliff to get through to him. I was laughing a bit because everyone was angry at Orion last week when I thought it was the sword’s idea! No such luck.
Yay for this page, and yay for your guest comic. I thought it was really great!
Oh man… that guest comic made me giggle uncontrollably. I’m not completely sold on Orion’s whole Jekyll/Hyde approach. He’s still too big an enigma for my liking.
Of course, someone did zombify Pride and Prejudice. However, since I have never read the original work, it would probably just confuse me even more.
It’s true!

And it’s interesting that you also mentioned Sea Monsters, because, lo and behold
http://www.thinkgeek.com/books/humor/c2bb/
I got here because of the guest comic. I just had to find out why there was a rock giant named Paddington. Now I’m addicted — and yes, I read all 900+ pages in less than 24 hours. My laundry resents you.
Going to drop him?! He DID drop him. Flying or not, letting go of a person over a cliff amount to dropping them off a cliff.
Orion still deserves a punch for the dick move. Though the “That was a dick move, Orion” face in the last panel will have to satiate me.
I’d say that you would be more for a book like “Crusade in jeans”.
It’s a book for young teenagers, but the subject would be right up your alley.
Wait, so when you hold someone by the neck over a cliff… they get scared? I dunno sounds like totally an unexpected reaction to me Orion π
haha I love that last panel Scott. Both of their facial expressions are great, and you showed Alex was mad without having him call Orion mean names and stuff which isn’t proper for the youngins to emulate.
He has magic armor. Getting told off by nichole all those times did far more damage than a little fall off of a cliff would do…Orion needs to learn to throw harder… *snickers* its alex we are talking about. think about the time he fell from a tower. it did squat.
Haha, glad I’m not the only one who thought of Pride and Predjudice and Zombies ( Seth Grahame-Smith).
Well… yeah… but his sword helped AND caused immeasurable property damage to the castle tower at the same time Terra. π
Seriously, Orion… you KNOW fear grounds humans regardless of age in Dreamland.
Luckily Alex got his head together and thought… quickly… for a change. *grins*
(ugh… my comments feel a couple days behind…)
Love the Unshelved review… though I prefer Mansfield Park and Emma over both P&P and S&S. Don’t have the books anywhere any more. Hm… good thing a book store is right down the street. Gotta go pick them up and read them again.
haha… so it seems that “normal” tactics just don’t work on alex. a hard nut to crack.
love alex’ skeptical expression in the first panel. the “loon” thought was already there then. π
unexpected reaction: well, for orion maybe. I mean, he’s a different species with different customs and mindset. so maybe for centaurs that IS the way to go… π
orion might just not have enough experience with dealing with adult humans. π
And Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters! I hear they’re actually very amusing books.
Psh.. why would you ever want to read a book without zombies? Or spaceships.. Or zombies in outerspace!
feline256: the youngins as you call ’em get to know them rude words and mean names way earlier than you think. Does kindergarten spell a thing? That’s the one uberplace to gain knowledge of mean words.
Besides “you loon” does indeed qualifiy as “mean name”, especially in combination with that facial expression, eh? translated to german “loon” comes out as “Bengel” or “LΓΌmmel” which are to be considered cuss words albeit of a quite mild color, if you get my meaning.
stay safe π
LOLOLOL, aah~ Alex’s expression is just priceless
I like how Orion smirks like ‘yeah, I deserve that..’ hah.
Last night I slammed my finger in a door and almost cut it off. Ow. It still really hurts
I always miss your Livestreams because I’m not on Twitter… it would help if you did them at specific times so I can actually schedule some time to watch them.
my dictionary says, the “lΓΌmmel” translation counts only if the scots say “loon”. π
the “spinner” translation is what I would agree to most. π
(but even the “spinner” is a mild word and rarely used in a mean way. I know that I only use it in a teasing way π ).
I agree with Alex’s review of Pride and Predjudice … and I would rather grad a sword and stab things than read THAT book … so Thank You SOO much for not only giving THE perfect short review of the book but keeping it honest as well. Anyone who reads the review will INSTANLY know if they’d want to read it … or just go stab things with a sword. So often a review only offer ONE view point .. I am so glad you made one that identifies with BOTH views of the book.
I am off now in search of my sword … and things to stab.
Wow!
Thank you (and your laundry) for coming by.
So glad you did.
π
Morning all!
So glad you enjoyed the review.
Was so fun to do.
That book review is HILARIOUS!
I laughed myself out of breath! ^.^
~Prince Demitri
Wow. P&P review. Its like a gender specific disease. You captured it exactly though….
Yeah maybe he’s not all bad. >.>
Yea let’s stab stuff!!
“You loon” *snort, snicker* All I can think of is Monty Python and the Holy Grail… “You’re a looney!”
Now I want to give Alex a British accent in my head. hahahaha!
The spontaneous LiveStreams are fun, but it might be a good idea to have at least one time that’s scheduled so people like “Aeolian”, who’s not on Twitter and me, who never remembers to check Twitter, can be sure to catch you on-line. The last one I watched was a lot of fun. π
Best. Book. Review. Ever.
And for the Livestreams, with my attention span you’d have to be dancing in my living room wearing that koala costume you have (you know you do!) and beating a couple rabid dingos together to a salsa beat to hold my attention for over 30 seconds. Not a comment on your entertainment value, just on my state of mind since Look A Squirrel!
Liked the Unshelved comic; I was wondering when looking at the LiveStream why Nastajia was reading a book that doesn’t exist in her world, or what she could possibly know about historical England. I gotta say, though, the conversion to GIF format (and therefore a 256-color palette) really destroyed the artwork.
“Well, you were going to DROP me, you LOON!” Heh.
Having read Pride and Prejudice and thoroughly enjoying it, I actually opened Pride & Prejudice & Zombies once in an airport bookstore out of boredom. What I found frightening was how well much of the original dialogue fit in the new version with in many cases little alteration.
Alex makes a good point but desperate times call for desperate measures…
I would love to see the Livestream, but sadly my dial up connection prevents it…
Heheheheheheheheheheh! Loved the guest strip!
There’s actually a Star Wars zombie book that just came out, which gives you exactly that. XD (Death Trooper, it’s called)
Finally I get to see at least a little temper from Alex. ^_^ Oh well I guess I can hope or more when we are actually facing the real bad guys.
Same here, although the middle two panels, his expression is rather surprisingly blank considering Orion’s talking about having threatened him.
Then again, it’s probably as blank as his brain… π
If the plot revolve an adventure/romance story compose of a human Elizabeth falls in love with an undead Mr. Darcy & on a quest to save Victorian-era England from undead zombies, then Alex & Paddington may have enjoy the book. ( P.S- Wickham would have been the half-human/half-sea monster lol.)
About the Livestreams, I wonder if you can embedded a live stream video on to your Dreamland blog. I sometimes notice other webcomics do that but I watch them whenever I get the chance. Also, I don’t have twitter so I only know a livestream is on if you announce it on your blog ahead of time.
“Ey! Don’ca ever do tha’ again you loon!”
XD
Well, all the fans should be satisfied now that Alex call Orion a name :P.
I absolutely LOVE the guest comic! ” Hey Paddington I’ve got a sword wanna go stab things?” LOL
And the last panel was amazing as well XD!
Maybe if you were planning on doing a livestream maybe announce it with the latest page and an estimated time to start, allowing for in case something else comes up. Or the embedding thing that Michelle S mentioned, that would definetely attract new viewers with minimal advertising.
You tell him who’s boss, Alex! Give him a certain salute when you leave, one that requires minimal fingers. Speaking of leaving, in three days Nastajia and the others will have been in Aethos for a year, Alex coming a month later. Is this the longest peroid of time that the gang spent in one place? I know they spent a lot of time in the merpeople kingdom but I started reading just as the gang entered Hilmdel.
Ha! I love the book review, Scott!
And hey, it’d be great if you could do the livestreams at specific times so people would know when to tune in. Otherwise, you could always pre-record and do them as a more episodic thing. It really depends on what sort of thing you want. SO really, do you want it to be episodic, or live? If live, you’ll have to either create a set schedule or post advance notice so people know when to tune in.
Great comic. Though I think Alex’s face is a bit… repeated in the second to last panel. I think it should show a little more thought. That’s my own opinion anyways. π
But his face on the last panel was brilliant! XD
ahaha. i wanna go stab things with alex and paddington too!!! xD
wow i didn’t realize how TINNYY kiwi really is!! wow O__O
that was a funny comic page
ooooo potty mouth!!!!! π
/yes more live streams. when do you do them again
No, no, no, Alex. Orion is a CENTAUR. A loon is a bird.
I can’t believe you call “Pride and Prejudice” “Great Literature”. That book sucks! Big time. The only way I passed that part of my English class was because I watched the movie and read the cliff notes cause that book was soooooooooooooo freaking boring and retarded. I am a chemist though, so literature never really did it for me. I like sci-fi and fantasy novels pretty well though.
Pfft. Alex said loon XD
to the book review: there is a version of pride and predijudice with zombies in it. its called pride and predijudice and zombies. quite a funny read.
A line that we’ll never see…
“You can remove that hand or I can remove that hand… with a sword.”
Needless to say, I’m still in the “Orion is a (expletive deleted)” camp.
Scott, late last night I read Unshelved and saw your post; today I spent the entire day reading this comic. I would never have found it otherwise. You did a great book review, I love your comic and have now become an addict.
It seems to me that Alex actually learned a lot more than just how to fly again from that. Normally he doesn’t call people loons. He also normally isn’t as calm as he seems to be now… Hmmm… Are we sure Alex didn’t hit his head at some point during that drop?
I’d love to join the livestream, however with my schedules, it’s unlikely to ever happen, with or without announcement. – maybe with a fixed time I might be able to at some point, but really … not worth the hazzle. I enjoy the on demand streams just as much.
On a side note – seems the advertising at the bottom is indeed localized (Denmark, Europe), for me.
On the other side of the same note – your copyright message and links should really be made a little wider, possibly matching the width of the advertisement banner and then simply centered. – Looks a little strange with the copyright notice broken up into two lines with just a single word on the last line.
While we’re at the notes – Perhaps do a geoip with the night/day themes, so that it fits all over the world. Pretty strange sitting at 3:30 in the night watching a day theme.
Forgot to weigh in on the Livestream thing. I figure 2-3 times a week would be plenty. I’d REALLY like to participate and more importantly learn observationally, so I think the scheduled event would often be better overall with room to add an extra one or more if you’re particularly concerned about an aspect of a page.
That said, even as much as a “Hey guys, I’m thinking of doing a livestream on Wednesday. Not sure when exactly, but I’ll tweet it when it’s up.” would give people a general frame of reference and would probably be sufficient.
I was about to go and post a link to pride, prejudice, and zombies myself.
Well, he did just teach Alex to fly…
Meeby he has loon in his blood? lol
A loony Centaur!
… If someone that had just thrown me off a cliff tried to act all fatherly like that…
I would remove his hand from my person by sword.
Thank you Irish Cow.
I’m so glad I did the guest strip!
π
Welcome and hope you enjoy your stay here in Dreamland.
optimus, I have found that great literature does not necessarily fit a person’s taste. I never have been able to read Dickens, but there was a time when I loved Dostoevsky. There’s no accounting for taste, I guess.
Hahaha, love the last panel!
Would that make him a loontaur?
π
Oh my god I love that Jane Austen thing so much. It is a perfect representation of girls vs. boys in a nutshell.
That’s why you start out with a bunch.
