Page 909…
Happy Monday everyone!
I’m in Chicago for the ALA (American Library Assoc) show.
Sorry I wasn’t able to update the desktop image. I will later this week if I can.
In theΒ meanwhile…here’s the link to the old one.
Hope you’re enjoying the story. And I’ll pop in when I can.

Don’t read it, Alex! You don’t want to wind up like Pandora! Though, it does make you wonder what he wrote to Daniel…
‘between your brother and me’ would be correct grammar. if you enter the text into a word doc, it will correct these things for you automatically.
i can’t imagine the situation where the ‘native american elder’ would need to know the roles everyone will play out in order to mastermind the outcome. this is not going in a p.c. direction and i strongly advise you to consult with our choctaw forum member before moving ahead with this storyline. you’re only going to find that this causes you untold unwanted headaches if you ignore the issue. like i said, ask your friends at disney, they’ll tell you.
I don’t think it matters if the elder is a ‘native american elder’, a little old oriental guy, or a feminine ‘oracle’.
He is a recurring character type that is seen in many forms and stories…not sure how it is “not going in a p.c. direction”, but that is just my opinion.
I think he was being sarcastic.
But if he wasn’t, then I wish he was being sarcastic.
Remember folks. P. C. is a P. of C. (Political Correctness is a Piece of Crap)
political correctness? my goodness, this is a fairy tale…and i think scott has already told us that it’s innocent story telling and nothing more.
I think Dan would probably share what the first letter says with Alex. but, Alex may have to beat it out of him – with brotherly love of course.
The whole transfer between worlds will definitely make Alex a true believer – if he aint one already.
I just LOVE where this is going!
Soon it shall begin; Dan will soon play a BIG part in this story. Well, bigger, anyways.
We still have to worry about Nicole, whose mental state isn’t that much better than Felicity’s right now. Nicole may ‘recover’ by reverting to her old views with even more force. Or she may demand to visit Felicity to try to help her. And there is Dan’s younger cousin.
Scott! That is a GREAT plot twist! π
So who else is banking on Dan being the actual King of Dreamland, cursed away by Nicodemus in some way or other ?
I saw the possibility back on http://thedreamlandchronicles.com/?p=467, and it seems more and more to be the case :-j
About the political correctness discussion – I think that Scott asked for comments to be made on this, so it’s only fair that you will let anyone speak up. After all, why would Scott make such a comment if he wasn’t genuinely concerned and wouldn’t like to go into this matter? I do wonder, however, why the mentioned Choctaw forumer needs a spokesperson here. I assume that this person can speak for him or herself and can post a comment here to clarify the situation – e.g. if they are offended or not.
Also, can you post a link to the discussion in the forum, I would like to at least take an interested look at it, as I usually don’t become part of forums.
Sorry, I’m probably still jet lagged – some of these sentences are rather scrambled.
Don’t know why I never checked out this comic before, but when I finally did, I read through it in one day. I got hooked! It’s great, I like the not-so-typical comic style you use!
Cheers from Norway!
I think the constructive criticism has already been said many times from “michelle4jerusalem” and I am getting tired of hearing from him/her. It is a fairy tale, and even though Scott asked for help, I don’t think he has to stop the story to correct a fairtytale.
Untold unwanted headaches? If someone doesn’t like it ,they don’t have to read it. You cannot make everyone in the world happy. I love this Comic, and actually a few of my Native American friends love it too, and find it fine with them. There was nothing wrong with the story, since they knew, it was just a STORY!
For some reason, Orion’s comments make me uneasy. I’m not really worried about Alex peeking at Dan’s letter; they already had a talk about the privacy thing. I hope everything works out ok for Daniel on this one.
Good Morning.
I’m still in Chicago. But hope to leave early to drive back home today.
As I’ve said before. Comments are always welcome.
It’s great to have varying perspectives on my story. So thank you all.
I’ve thought about it sufficiently and feel comfortable where I’m going with my characters and their connections to the real world.
So thanks for the heads up michelle4jerusalem.
I appreciate it.
I’m sure everything will work out OK.
I better head out to the convention. See you guys later.
I agree with you as well Amber. I showed this comic to sevreral of my friends, who were Native American, and they didn’t find anything wrong with it. And besides that, the grammar he used was correct as I took the liberty to run it through Free Grammar Checker. In this scenario, either sentences would’ve worked. If you don’t believe me, please confrence this site: http://www.whitesmoke.com/free-online-checker/
Anywho, another great chapter Scott and I’m looking forward to seeing Daniel in Dreamland. π But I’m going to bet that Alex will look at the message anyways.
would I be the first to point out that the dude is a centaur? whilst his culture may have smilarities to a native american one, it’s not. Like previously stated, they shared cultures with each other so it’s very likely that the centaurs adopted parts of the Native American culture to suit their own.
I would be WAY too tempted to look at the note at this point. It would’ve been easier to resist if I thought it was just some boring greeting to my brother π
Well said Amber, Lily & Moley.. It was clearly stated prior to this that there were some simularities to the Native American and it was not all inclusive. If Michelle4**** has an issue with this, she needs to take it to the forums as again, Scott pointed out previously.
IRT the grammer, Daniel and I is correct, me is used in first char, me and Daniel, it would not be correct to say, I and Daniel. And so it begins!!
btw: Scott you handled this potentially heated p.c. debate REALLY! well! Congrats.
I agree with hints of hints. It seems to me that the best way to prevent someone from being king (short of assassination) is to prevent them from ever entering their future domain. Alex might become king of the elves, but I’m inclined to believe the title of King of Dreamland goes to Dan with Alex as his champion and protector. After all, that’s what brothers do, protect each other.
“IRT the grammer, Daniel and I is correct, me is used in first char, me and Daniel, it would not be correct to say, I and Daniel.”
In fact, “I” is used when in subject form, and “me” is used when in object form. E.g., “my brother and I said it”, but “it was said to my brother and me”. It isn’t determined by position in the sentence, but by grammatical function.
“I and Daniel” is correct (when used as a subject, not an object) just not said much, because we generally find it polite to put ourselves in the last position. “Me and Daniel” is similar (but is only correct in object form).
I love the comic, though π
I wonder if its possible to have a super-sized medicine bag, for people.
just a “picky” point, scott… did you notice that “precisely” is spelled incorrectly in panel 3? π
re: daniel being the king of dreamland—at the very least, alex is going to need daniel’s brains to beat nicodemus. obviously, brawn isn’t going to work lol
I have a bad feeling about this…
I’m with Hintsofhints and Elfsceptic! π
I’ve been thinking this ever since I started reading the comic (a while ago): Dan was banned either because he’s the true king or because he’s fated to help Alex achieve something (defeat Nicodemus, probably). It’s not fair that, being twins, Alex gets all the glory. π
And no, I don’t think Nicodemus died. -_-
Just a question. Is the bag going to actually bring Dan to Dreamland or his messages to the four legged pen-pal?
Please, Alex, please let Dan read it first and *then* pester him to tell you contents. If he argues it’s private, tell him it’s not just for you, but all the loyal readers out there.
I can’t believe people are getting all worked up about political crappiness (*ahem*correctness) over a FAIRY TALE. As if real-world PC-ness isn’t already silly enough, now we want FICTION to be PC as well?! What’s the world coming to? Seriously. This is just ludicrous. Scott can write this story however he wants; you don’t have to read it if you don’t like it.
Rarely does anyone speak with proper grammar; why would a comic, a story told in voice bubbles, need perfect grammar…it would take away from the story telling if everyone spoke perfect english.
“untold unwanted headaches” to me sounds like a threat, who is this michelle4jerusalem person anyway?
Stop feeding the troll.
It’s definitely supposed to be “…between Daniel and me.” If it were at the beginning of the sentence it would be “between Daniel and I”, but since it is at the end, it should be changed.
If anyone wants to argue with me, I’ll tell you now; I still have that lesson from comp 1 fresh in my brain. I don’t care WHO you are, what I said about the grammar is STRAIGHT from the textbook.
“This message is between Daniel and me.”
A good way to sanity check your grammar in instances like this is to reverse the order of the two people.
One might say “between me and Daniel.”
No one would ever say “between I and Daniel”.
Position in the sentence has no bearing on the proper word choice. As GrammarNazi pointed out, it is the part of speech which determines the correct choice. In this case, the first person pronoun is an object of the preposition “between”. If you check your grammar books, as NeoDarklight has, you’ll see that the objective case for the first person singular pronoun is “me” always and never “I”.
As for the discussion on “who cares about proper grammar?” there are clearly several people who do. From my view, even though it’s a fantasy comic and people frequently use improper grammar in real life, Orion is supposed to be amongst the erudite. If no other person in Dreamland would know or care about speaking properly, he would.
Daniel being the true king… I thought of that. The fact is, though, I’m not sure if I actually kinda guessed it or it is just me wanting it to happen.
Well, guess I’ll have to wait and see!
Also, thanks for the grammar lessons guys! I mean it, I try to learn from that
Why are people being nitpicky about grammar when it’s all dialogue?
Well Foxby, as Zeb said, it’s not so much that it’s dialogue, it’s the person speaking.
And sorry Lily, that grammar checking program is wrong.
I don’t think Orion is necessarily out of line when it comes to stressing the secrecy of what he has to say to Daniel. True, he has already discussed it in general with Alex, but in this case it may be important enough to make it clear just how important it is. If that makes sense.
And yes, Orion, as an educated elder would probably speak grammatically correctly: This is between Daniel and me. A small point, perhaps, but it is of such small points that character is built.
there is a spelling typo I don’t think anyone pointed out… precisely not “precisesly” in the 3rd panel.
looks great! I think the blue lighting was an awesome choice. π
In other words: “Don’t look in the bag!” X}
I think he was supposed to be. No idea whether he will be.
