Page 1523…
Happy Friday!
Thank you all for reading along this week!
Couple of things…
1) STING! That’s the first thing I thought of when I wrote this… but honestly… the legends of Excalibur DO include it glowing/blinding opponents.
So… while I’m a HUGE Hobbit fan… I’m actually following Arthurian lore (according to the internet at least…ha ha).
That being said…don’t doubt that Dan (who was reading the Hobbit the first time we met him) will mention Sting at some point.
2) I’ve put my latest Art Nouveau paintings up for sale on Etsy.
If you’re interested in these…please take a look.
Thank you all and have a wonderful weekend.
Scott
If they get too distracted by the glowing sword, they won’t see what caused the ‘snap’ until it’s too late, I fear.
Orcs?
Nicole’s comment is priceless XD
LOVE,LOVE, LOVE. ( and feeling so much better, thanks fellow dreamers)
This just gets more and more Awesome, and I can’t express how much I love these two characters.
Nicole’s comment was absolutely perfect.
😀 😀 😀
Yep stuff about to hit the fan, glowing swords are never a good sign.
Glad to hear you’re feeling better.
And even though I’m not Nicole’s biggest fan, she gets major kudos points for that comment indeed. ^_^
Scott, a friend of mine is so obsessed with Sting the musician that the first thing I thought of was him when you said that, then I tried to figure out what ‘Sting’ had to do with Excalibur… 😛 >_<
Saying that though, being familiar with the Hobbit Dan should be in super cautious/alert mode right now! 😉
Also, according to my research glowing swords can indicate:
Trolls (Large Smelly Type, Small Annoying Type and the scariest of all, INTERNET Type!)
Goblins
Wasps (Yes, wasps, those things are evil!!!! O_O)
Chuck Goddamn Norris
The Ghost of Elvis
Dangerous Proximity to HotPockets
I also assume it glows in the presence of Wraiths, but I'm not sure about that one.
Darn. I was going to say that.
I think Glamdring might be a better comparison for Excalibur than Sting. Daniel’s never struck me as having much in common with Bilbo or Frodo.
“Run away! Run awayyy!!”
Well, actually, I’d say he’s got a good deal more in common with studious bookish poetry-loving types unexpectedly thrown into adventure after spending most of their lives only HEARING about adventure in their little Ordinary Town, Middle of Nowhere, than he has in common with an anciently wise and powerful demigod come to the mortal realms in human guise to travel about bringing hope and guidance to members of lesser races… but that’s just me. :p
Also, I do believe that Glamdring was longer, so I guess that in that way it fits.
Ah, but Gandalf spent years poring over books and scrolls studying the Ring and the events surrounding it, which has a lot in common with Daniel studying the myths surrounding Dreamland.
And, yeah, Glamdring was much longer, being a two-handed sword whereas Sting was a dagger. That also influenced my decision a bit, but I figured if he was going to compare it to Sting that must mean he was comparing himself to Bilbo or Frodo so I didn’t mention it.
I notice the sword glowing several days ago but didn’t have the nerve to ask. î”®
Glowing BRIGHTLY. Either it’s actually Glamdring and Orcs are near, or I’m guessing something else from the Nightmare Realm is here to try to finish the job of killing the King for good.
Another snap. Snap again. ‘It’s the Beater!’ Thump, thump, thump, thump (fading into distance.)
As for TWC, it’s
#5: 13,862
#6: 12,840 <= we are here
#7: 10,045
Vote on, fans of Dreamland!
Glamdring or Orcrist. Dan couldn’t have forgotten, Scott: unlike you or me, he’s just had not enough time to. 🙂
Alright… granted on Gandalf’s scholarly pursuits. The ring/Dreamland comparison hadn’t occurred to me. Although, both Bilbo and Frodo spent a great deal of time writing/researching, and Bilbo even did translations of some older texts, so that was part of where I was coming from.
OH! Come to think of it… Tolkien did have some bits in The Lost Tales about “paths of Lorien” (the god of dreams) which children followed to come to a common meeting-place, and even a poem about two children who had met in dreams in such a place and then met later in the waking world… Dreamlander, much? 😉
Who’s to say that the blue glow when orcs are near wasn’t a reference to Nightmare-minion detection? 😉
That is actually a good question on Nicole’s part…
When someone mentions Sting the musician, I tend to think of the original Lynch version Dune movie, and one of Sting’s more memorable quotes from his role as Feyd-Rautha, “I will kill him!!”
So is there two different swords?
It’s pronounced “orcses” 🙂 At least…that’s the only way I ever say it. 😛
LOVE that movie. 🙂
*giggles* Nicole wins today’s awesome award.
Is there a missing page between today’s page and yesterday’s one?
They seem to have walked backwards in a blink and sword appeared from out of nowhere.
I have to agree that I think Glamdring is a more appropriate parallel to Excaliber than Sting, though to me that has more to do with its origins than its current wielder.
Yessss, precious, it IS orcses, isn’t it?
Yes. there’s the big honking Sword of Kings in Dreamland, which can cut through anything there and which manifests itself in the waking world as the pendant around Alex’s neck; and there’s Excalibur, which Niviene had forged in Dreamland by the Dwarves and Elves and managed to bring through the Pool as a gift to Arthur. Arthur eventually gave it back and she held onto it until Daniel came along, when she gave it to him.
This is the first time it’s been shown Excalibur is more than a hunk of metal, though.
Love it!
No, I don’t think so. Daniel had the sword in his hand in yesterday’s comic. They may have stepped back when they heard the snap, but the camera was also much closer to them in the last panel from yesterday than the first of today. So that may also make it look like they are further back than they really are (were?).
Among other references… did any other original StarCraft player react to this ‘What was that?’ I’ve been wondering why I’m suddenly feeling so uneasy for quite a few hours. 🙂
“Lovely Feyd…”
*shudders* Gods, just remembering Baron Harkonnen saying that line creeps me out!
Legend says Excalibur glowed when it was pulled from the stone. That it glowed in the hand of its owner. Hmm…
In addition, when Excalibur was first drawn, in the first battle testing Arthur’s sovereignty, its blade blinded his enemies. Thomas Malory[15] writes: “thenne he drewe his swerd Excalibur, but it was so breyght in his enemyes eyen that it gaf light lyke thirty torchys.”- wikipedia, could be taken as either triggered by held by king or by in presence of enemies.
Your sword blows glue!
…Let me try that again.
And so far from orcland/auckland! (LotR out-takes anyone?)
Just found this comic three days ago, and am now caught up. I have to say that you have a great story here, thank you for sharing it, Scott.
BTW I think the sword is glowing because Dan accidentally hit the on switch.
Hmmm, ‘I shall bend like a reed in the wind…’ or something like that. Great film.
It’ll be a life-saver, not a light-saber. 🙂
It’s nice that Alex has a way to be protected while asleep and in dreamland.
You know, here’s a weird thought. What if it’s Merlin?
-It brings up some fun questions if it is. Like why has he not revealed his return to Niviene?
When the guardians were introduced and I saw their tech wings, I immediately thought “Come here pigeons, my pillows need stuffing.”
Man, I love that game.
there were two different swords in Arthurian legend also. Excalibur was bestowed to him by the Lady of the Lake… the sword drawn from the stone was a different sword. I forget what it was called. But Mallory screwed up and called them both Excalibur, hence the confusion.
So, Daniel has the sword bestowed to Arthur by Nivienne, and Alex has the sword won by Arthur from the stone. Aha.
Thank you very much.
And welcome.
🙂
Be on your guard. There are older and fouler things than Orcs in the deep places of the world.
Fly you fools!
You … shall not … pass!
“I’m a leaf on the wind!”
… wait, wrong movie, sorry.
😉
Consider this stolen (okay, okay: borrowed). Someday, I will run a game, and my players will encounter a magical sword that blows glue. I will patiently wait until someone discovers the apparent typo before allowing the hilarity to ensue.
Darn. I was going to say that too. 😛
XD Just the thing I would say in the given situation!!
Yeah, that was my first thought too. XD
“Because thousand-year old mythical pointy things tend to do that. Try to keep up.”
Seems like we all had the same thought
