I think shoving him away, putting yourself in between him and Nastajia, while asking a “wtf”-style Q with clenched fists and an angry look would have been quite as effective.
No you’re absolutely right, however the subtle point easily forgotten (I too forgot at first) is that Alex was unconscious when it happened (the mermaid in question literally giving him the kiss of life in effect), so doesn’t actually recall that fact. Hence to him this was totally new.
Nastajia looks extremely cool in the third panel by the way, totally unrelated but still, if anyone can make angry expressions look cool it’s good ‘ole Staj!!!
But slugging him full-on is so more like Alex XD

Eyes? Uh-huh. Man, if the situation wasn’t so awkward this would be a great time for Alex to tell Nastajisa that she’s really pretty when she’s mad. ^.^
Oh, now that would be funny, but probably practical since that guy’s mouth is likely pretty tender right now.
The sequence of yesterdays panels made it look like the mer-dude was totally savoring the moment. Alex had time to watch, protest, and then throw a punch. If it’s all business, just peck her and be done, man.
Even knowing about the kiss of life, I’m totally with Alex on this one.
(Ok, knowing about the kiss of life, I would have settled for protesting “Get on with it” rather than punching, but still…)

Ok, honest here: I’m not a fighter. I wouldn’t have thrown that punch in Alex’s position, and certainly not in the real world. But I would totally have wanted to, and considering his age and situation, I don’t blame him at all. I agree that Najastia should have had the courtesy to warn him.
I am slighty surprised by the outpouring of condemnation for the actions of our poor dimwitted King. You have all overlooked the fact that Alex has spent his entire life caring only about himself. He only weeks ago, learned to put somebody else, Staj, before himself. That is a hard lesson to learn and takes time to accept. At this point, it would still be shaky at best. Fast forward to yesterdays comic, this person (gender does not matter and relationship even does not matter) this person whom he holds in the highest regard and has trusted with his… gulp… heart, appears to be accepting something as intimate as a kiss, which if you will recall took ALEX quite a while to secure from Staj, with a quick ambivalence and nonchalance that offends him, wounds him, and probably confuses him. A hurt, offeneded, wounded ALEX… punches things. And by Alex I mean every man. It’s in our nature… 😉 (stepping down from soap box… now…)
Wow….So we have gotten so weak that we can’t even defend those that we love? How double standard….women want men to be bold and protectors. Yet if we are, we are condemed and if we don’t we are spineless…..so let’s flip this completely around…..
Alex sits and watches Mr. Merman kiss Staj and does nothing about it and does not even bat an eye….
Staj: “You don’t even care….you let him kiss me and you don’t even care!”
Alex: “I don’t own you. You are your own woman. You can do what you want.”
Makes for such a romantic story and shows Staj that he cares so much for her.
Yeah…so ….I am with Alex on this one….anyone tries to kiss my wife like that in front of me might be spitting chiclets too…..
Even if it is nothing, strictly for the whole breathing underwater deal, the entire situation is still Nastajia’s fault. She KNOWS that Alex doesn’t necessarily know what specific Dreamland customs are, and even if he did as a child, she can’t expect him to remember it. She’s smart enough to realize that Alex would have some sort of reaction like this, so she should’ve known that this would be something to explain BEFOREHAND, not while lecturing him after.

A couple of things.
Alex’s green eyes just before the punch are great (green eyed jealousy, right?)
Instead of moving yet closer yesterday, Nastajia should have stopped before the kiss when Alex was saying, “Hey, what are you…?” If he would have turned his back on her, she would be the one needing to apologize. But we know he cares too much, and she will hold him accountable for it.
Well, Alex isn’t picking teeth out of his backside yet, so apparently the princess understands… as long as he doesn’t follow up his rotten diplomatic skills by sticking his foot in his mouth.
Yes, I know diplomacy is learned. No, I’m not pointing fingers at Alex as a man. I’m laughing my backside off because Alex is a typical hot-blooded teenager. It’s a comic and, from what I saw yesterday, people are taking it way too seriously.
Relax, sip your coffee or tea, and take it in the spirit it’s meant to be. Putting too much seriousness into the reading takes away from the fun of the reading.
I totally agree with you, James. I probably would have grabbed her shoulders and pulled her away, but if they couldn’t give a good explanation, BAM.

What was there to defend? Nastajia was totally moving in on the Merman at the same rate. She wasn’t being attacked. If Alex was defending anything, it was his territory, i.e. Nastajia. I’m not saying it isn’t in character for Alex, I’m just saying that hitting someone was a major overreaction. Grabbing her arm and asking WTH, would’ve been a far better choice.
Now had the merman actually been physically attacking Staj, let the fists fly. That, I understand. That’s defending your loved one.
Like I said before, Anybody would have raised SOME kind of cain!

I was mixed on Alex–yes, he threw a punch long before he really knew what was going on.
1. Nastajia is not yet his wife, or fiancee.
2. He didn’t know about the need for the kiss of life, since last time he was unconscious–and if he had ever been there before, it was at least 8 years back.
3. He’s dealing with not one but two other cultures: merpeople and elves.
4. As King of Dreamland, he’d better learn (quickly!) how to be more diplomatic when something is irritating him.
Still, given his history and understanding, I can see how he acted as he did. And, maybe partly, he was justified.
(Wait until he sees who plans on snogging him! Is it that one in the green??)
I guess this “kiss” gives the temporary ability to breath underwater … and Alex has to kiss one of the mermaids to get this ability also.
At least I hope for him the Mer*maids* can give that too ^^

She is pretty close to fiancee right now, normal protocol would be to “break up” with boyfriend before smooching another. From what I have seen in real life, if a girl saw her long time boyfriend smooch someone else in front of her you usually would get a very strong and often nasty physical reaction, such as “catfight”.
I’m guessing it’s going to be the guy he punched… In my opinion, that’s would be “Alex getting his” as Scott alluded to yesterday. 😀
Another option would be that he has to swim head above water the whole way,,, But i think the merfolk are classier than that.

Oh, so it’s okay for him to be kissed by a mermaid, but when a male merfolk does it to her, it’s a violation. I bet he wouldn’t have punched anyone if one of the mermaids kissed her. Silly teenage boy and his double-standards.

“He meant nothing by it”… Wow. Poor merman… He’s been relegated to the dreaded friend zone!
Nowhere have we seen anything that would imply that he’d be ok with being kissed by a mermaid. As was pointed out several times, he was unconscious, the last time he was kissed by a mermaid, so he is not aware of the need for this method of application of the spell to make them able to travel underwater.
My guess is that had a mermaid tried to kiss him first, before the merman tried to kiss Nastajia, he would have balked and, at the very least, shoved the mermaid back vehemently. Any respectable young man (he may be a goofball, he may have been drifting along for a while, but I see him as respectable, and definitely dedicated/commited in his love for Nastajia) would not willingly kiss another woman, especially on the mouth, and certainly not in front of his significant other (be she a girlfriend, fiancée or wife).
So I definitely don’t see any kind of double standard, here. Impulsiveness, yes. Rash reaction, yes. Quickly jumping to conclusion, without knowing all the facts, definitely. But double standard, not a bit.
So, you’re saying that rather than assault the merman, Alex should have assaulted Nastajia!?
My brain balks at trying to imagine the uproar in the comments if THAT had happened.

Also, Alex and Nastajia don’t know what they are getting themselves into. For to get the information they seek, they must fight the monster. The monster that scared the kraken, Nicodemus, and many others. What do you mean he’s JUST a rabbit?!?!?!
One thing I’m actually impressed with here is the merman’s response. The mermaids are making certain he’s OK, and he’s just watching. He sees Staj has everything under control, he sees she’s standing between him and the guy that just smacked him, and he’s just watching to make certain things STAY THAT WAY.
I think he realizes that there has been a miscommunication and doesn’t seem mad. Surprised? Shocked? Really sore? Yes. But he doesn’t seem ANGRY about it. That impresses me.
As for me. If I as a guy kissed a girl in front of my girl friend, I would expect Something Bad to happen. I find it hypocritical for some to say that it is wrong for the same thing to happen when a girlfriend kisses another guy in front of her boyfriend.

You know, looking at it again, I have to agree. The merman seems to be simply waiting for it to be explained and the inevitable apology. Good form on the merman, especially on keeping his temper in check. And honestly, I have to agree. Alex, from his standpoint, AND with his information, was correct, and how Nastajia handles this will set how their relationship will be from now on.
So HE needs a kiss to make it better!

Go ahead Nastajia, kiss Alex now, and then explain about the merpeople kiss. That would certainly reaffirm her position to him.
If she defends herself first then Alex wouldn’t mean as much to her as he should.
I think Staj was maybe otherwise occupied at the time when Alex received the mermaid kiss earlier, so she doesn’t know that he was unconscious at that time. That would explain why she didn’t feel any need to clue him in beforehand this time. She thought that he knew already.
I still don’t understand HOW this kiss works. Last time the kiss was applied underwater; once in the air, the spell is broken. So why would the kiss work above water?
Merman keeping his temper in check? Let us remember that is the King of Dreamland that punched him. Appropriate response from the merman just might be, “A thousand pardons your majesty.” (Alex may not be the stuffy type, but that doesn’t mean subjects would take liberties.) “I meant no offense, and realized I should have explained myself.” Then it would be Alex’s turn to apologize.

I’ve been assuming that such suggestions are only for the practical fact that Nastajia is closer, therefore making the intervention quicker.
