Page 1265…
Hi all!
I thought I’d give you a desktop from today’s page. I kind of like how the second panel came out.

Well, you guys called it!
Millenium: Singular
Millenia: Plural
Just sayin’…
Speaking of the nightmare realm, I’m thinking it’s about time for Nic to call for some backup. 2 or 3 against 1 just isn’t fair.
This page could really use a panel where Bognok actually whacks Nick. As it is it looks like we only see the aftermath, which isn’t as visually impressive as I would have hoped.
That said, I like where the story appears to be going.
This, serah, is what we call PWNED!
Wow, this has me biting my nails! π I’m definitely enjoying the edge of the seat stuff, and can’t wait for each new posting. π
One thing I can’t help pointing out, though, is that the word would be “millenia” in the last bubble, not “millenium”. If you meant to say only for 1,000 years, it would be “a millenium”, but if you mean for more than one 1,000 year period, such as 2,000, 3,000, etc., it would be “millenia”. π Sorry for the geeky grammar thing, but I thought you’d want to know. π
Keep up the excellent work! I can’t wait to see the next set of panels! π
Double edit: Millennium/Millennia were supposed to have two n’s. That’s what I get for posting late at night.
Wow! that’s gonna hurt about now!
Bognok: FORE!!!!!!!!!!!!
*Nick Gose flying like a golfball*
Ahh you beat me to it. 1 millennium, 2 millennia.
GO BOGNOK AND NASTAJIA!!! (woot!)
The way Bognok is holding his club… is he a lefty? In a typical swing, the hand on top is what supplies the power, which is usually your dominant hand.
Except… the position of his arms makes it look like he’s at the beginning of the swing, rather than the follow through. At the beginning of the swing, the shoulder towards the “pitcher” has the hand on the bottom, but after the swing, the body rotates and the shoulder with the hand on top is facing the “pitcher”. Trying to swing the other way around is just awkward and has no real power. (Try picking up a baseball bat, swing it one way, then swing it the other without changing hands, see which one feels more natural, and how the hands are positioned after the swing.)
If you want the pose to be an accurate portrayal of a follow through, the hands need to be switched, which would also make Bognok a righty.
It’s a rule of the Universe isn’t it? Whenever you correct someone’s grammar, you are fated to make a grammar mistake in your own message.
Yup Nic got definitely pwned in this one xDD
Thanks for the desktop Scott, that second panel is indeed epic! Can’t help but feel Nic had that last one coming as well, forgetting Bognok might be around (and angry) is never a good thing. π
That being said, a part of me imagines an alternate storyline where Nastajia goes it alone against Nic, mostly because of that second panel.
Bow and arrow with whom I have lived,
bow and arrow with whom I now die,
serve right and justice one last time,
seek one last heart of evil,
still one last life of pain,
strike well old friend,
and then⦠farewell.
If the shades of the Nightmare realm have such a vested interest in Nicky, Where are they?
Doesn’t he ever say “Ouch”??
I’m thinking ol’ Nick is going to have to beat a retreat, or call for reinforcements. Because when Alex gets up he’s going to be swinging!
I reckon that Nic retreats into Nightmare realm and Guerilla as soon as he sees that he can’t win here. They gonna prepare some onslaught while the Dreamlanders are bringing Alex back into usable Shape – after such a Beat-up, I dare-say he’s more than a bit outta air.
But – say what you wanna say: Bognok for the rescue. Thats one cool dwarf. π
Given that Nick’s only been in power since King Arthur’s time, maybe “a millennium” is what Bognok meant. (Or even “over a millennium”… I can’t really remember which century Arthur was, just that he most certainly did not live “millennia” ago.”)
Love the story line, just as most anticipated π
On another note: Looking at Nas, this is the second time I have noticed that her top torso, her breast, seem a little low almost on top of her rib cage, or is is just me? It does not appear as she has in the past… I’m just saying!
And NOW you begin to see why you will fail, Nic. Because in the end, yours were alliances of CONVENIENCE and theirs are alliances of the HEART. Strike one down, strike down two, there will be two more to take their places. And the others will help the first back up, re-arm them, and send them back. This is not a skirmish. This is not a random encounter or a strategic assault which will be withdrawn. This is the FINAL battle, and they will not stop until you have surrendered or died.
(well, of course WE know it’s almost certainly not the FINAL battle, but against Nicodemus it pretty well HAS to be.
Nice that Bognok has put such a key point right out front.
Bognok sorta cut Nic’ short before he was to divulge the puppeteer….hmmmm….I wonder..The dwarves have betrayed dreamland before…
Ah!
Thank you. Will fix that ASAP!
Millennia?
Think you misunderstood what Nic was saying, he was talking about how he himself was attacking Alex (the puppet) instead of Nastajia (the puppeteer)…
I am so happy to see Bognok getting in on the action more, and I hope we actually get to see some of his fighting ability this time, since we didn’t last time. I would love to see him finish Nicodemus off (even though I’m pretty sure Alex will get the final shot at Nicodemus, whether he takes it, or redeems Nicodemus, and I’m okay with that, too).
someone been playing da2, heh love the page scott!
A couple things to note. First, Arthur is normally considered to have reigned before A.D. 1000, which would make it over 1000 years that Nicodemus has been in power, and anything over one makes it plural. For example, we would say 1 page, but 1.1 pages, so it would be millennia (or millenniums, as either is an acceptable plural). Also, even during the reign of King Arthur, we can already see that Nicodemus was being manipulated by the Nightmare Realm, and that he was their puppet before he usurped the throne. He pretended to be saying what was in Dreamland’s interest (and maybe at first believed it), but it was really what was in the Nightmare Realm’s interest.
While that is true in real world time, we’ve been given plenty of examples of how Dreamland time is completely fluid in comparison to ours. There’s no guarantee that it wasn’t milennia in Dreamland since the reign of Arthur.
Go Bognok!! π
I pulled down the desktop… is it me, or is it low resolution with limited colors? For instance, the notched arrow shows bad aliasing.
(Not complaining, just informing, in case it’s in error)
This depends on how he was swinging. In baseball, a right handed person would hold the right hand on top as that gives more power and control for an extended swing, since you can roll the wrists over. However, if Bognok kept the mace close to his body for a shorter, more powerful swing, then having the left hand on top would actually allow for more power.
Perhaps it’s because her arms are raised to fire her bow. With her shoulders lifted, that would give the optical illusion that her breasts were lower on her chest. Her midriff appears to be the same as it always was, though, so I think it looks fine. Also, I believe these characters are modelled in a 3D modelling system, so unless someone went in and tweaked her basic model, then the system extrapolated what Scott wanted her pose to be and put her “skeleton” in the right pose and modelled her flesh and clothing around that pose, rendering her to look like what we see here in this frame.
Let the butt-whoopin begin!!
The ‘boom’ in the last frame IMO is weak – needs to be more “BOOM”, “THWAK” or “KERCHAKAPOWZA”
Bognok FTW!
I love all these close combat scenes with Nick, you get a feel for how big a dragon he really is and what the heroes are up against.
Mind you, when the heroes have a super-dwarf on their side, things are a bit more even.
BOOM!
While the use of “millenniums” in The Warriors bugged me, Merriam-Webster accepts it as a less common alternative plural.
I like the force of Bognok’s argument–but I think Bullroarer’s invention of Golf while ending a battle in the Shire is even better.
Meanwhile…..
Alex: …. ow. I’m going to have such a headache when I wake up.
So millennia would suggest, thousands of years? Am I understanding that correct?
I’ve always loved dwarves. It must be because they’re so tiny, people don’t know they’re gonna get beat up until their ribs are broken.
I keep thinking of Gimli’s voice whenever he talks.
Your eyes are not deceiving you. It has to do with taking such a small portion of an image (i.e. only one frame) and blowing it up to desktop proportions. To get a better image, he would have to actually re-render that frame at full resolution/size.
Bognok: FORE! *swat*
Nicodemus: *chuckles evilly* Praying? Now die! *FWOARH!*
Kind of like spatulas/spatulae?
It’s good to have friends. Maybe Nick will learn that one day.
Huh…so is Bognok implying that there may be good dragons…and that Nicodemus was a traitor among them?
Nicodemus: “Foolishly attacking the puppet, instead of the one pulling the strings.”
Nastajia: “Oh, I’m pulling something of Alex’s, all right…”
Alex: “Nastajia, please, we’re having a hard enough time maintaining our PG rating as it is…”
I love the panel you set up as a wallpaper, but an even better one would be page 1263. With Nastajia on the roof with her bow…sweet pose!
Anyway…loving it!
For being that BIG, Bognok is quite a nimble SNEAKER! One would have guessed he would kinda make the earth rumble if he ran or jumped, but no. π
How about funguses/fungi?
It could be–unless Bognok is using it figuratively.
I would think the reason they took so long to get to Alex was that they were setting this ambush up – Don’t worry Nastajia, he’s the king – he can take it!
I only thought of this because every panel that Alex’s getting pawned in made me think – Okay, where’s everybody else? They couldn’t have taken this long to get there! And now, this is so perfectly set up. BOOM – Nick eats another building – is he starting to get the idea he’s overmatched here? Nawh – He’s too busy getting beat right now . . .
π
And Bognok goes Yard on that one!
Yeah, pretty much. Check the Wikipedia article on “Muphry’s Law” for details.
Bognok is not hitting a lite object or swinging around in the air. The spiked ball should bounce when it hits a rib cage. Even when bones break they are still springy (not too sure about dragon bone but I expect it is similar). A swing starting from up right heading down left would bounce up left.
The total length of Bognoks club-thing is about four hands long (Bognok’s hand). That would be shorter than the nightsticks or clubs police carry. More like a large flashlight. Using two hands does not make any sense.
They took that dragon for a swing!
what a surprising “twinkie house” type hit.
arrows are nothing to a dragon! but a mace? yeah that will put a hurtin on him.
Oh dear, there goes another building to fix later…
I’ve been reading Dreamland for about the last three years, and I really love it! Its my favorite comic ever! Keep up the awesome artwork and script =)
Thank you Ginny952!
So glad you’re enjoying it.
π
Hey all!
Render for Thursday’s page is taking a bit longer than expected.
I’ll update sometime by mid-morning.
Thanks in advance for your patience.
I’m a bit disappointed by the wallpaper provided by the vote, because it is ALIASED. (no anti-aliasing). I was thinking first, it would my best wallpaper from this website, but the aliasing ruins the picture.
I would love to see somebody pull that off with Nicodemus, but I’m pretty sure his head is on too securely. However, Nicodemus better look out if Nastajia pulls out a black arrow and starts talking to it.
Since the time between Alex’ childhood and his reappearance in Dreamland has been 8 years in both real world and Dreamland, I thought the average time flow between the two worlds was the same, while still fluctuating for shorter periods.
Taking this millenia-statement into consideration now tells me, the period where both worlds were progressing at the same speed hasn’t been that long (Alex’ lifetime at minimum). It also makes more sense that way. How could the dreamlanders forget about their history in a couple of hundred years? It must have been millenia in dreamland-time.
Just a suggestion for those wanting to use the image for your wallpaper.
Try it.
On many screen sizes, it will look just fine.
Or, load up your favorite graphic program and re-size it.
You also have to think of the whole “Time passes differently here” thing with Dreamland. So when in the human time it’s been just over a millennum, it could have been much longer for Dreamlanders
Love the page!
Dwarves: Makers of the the original “Mace”
Shadoom!
The wallpaper looks funny- arrow’s jagged for ex,and things look all pixelly.
Great menacing wallpaper with Staj and Nic so attitude! Standoff!
(“That’s it Nic, just a little longer”..)
(winks at Bognok))
…but I much prefer the crouched archer pose on top of the balluster or whatever for its dynamism.
Welcome Bognok! Now let’s play Bop A Dragron! XD
Great Page Scott! Headed right over to get my free desktop!
So Nastajia’s full speech was: “He fights not for Dreamland, Nicodemus! He fights for me! And I, him.”
In summary, she said “We are BOTH just fighting for each other. Nothing much to do with Dreamland, really.”
So how did that message translate into Alexander is the puppet while Nastajia is the puppeteer? Or did Nic think they’re BOTH puppets and he must find the puppeteer (Bognok, maybe? haha XD)?
Hrm..I think You are right. Makes more sense that way.
I think it was a roundabout way of saying Alex is too stupid to be acting on his own; so, logically speaking, his lover, Nastajia, MUST be manipulating him. π
Nicodemus: βFoolishly attacking the puppet, instead of the one pulling the strings.β
“and..with toothpicks I might add…”
then maybe she didn’t need to add the “and i, him” part =P
Consider what he is smacking in to a building. The weight of a dragon is quite a bit larger than his weight. Add in the fact that he is about 4 feet tall, and smacking some thing about 10 feet tall when on all four legs, and 30 feet tall standing upright and yeah it makes sense to smack the big huge thing thats running past with a mace using both hands. Physics is fun!
How big is a dwarf? I assumed based on past pages that Bognok was the tallest, and he came up to Alex’s chest. Granted he is wide enough to probably weigh some thing close to 300 pounds, armor and all, but thats about the average weight of a midevil knight in full armor. Granted knights weren’t sneaky at all, but they didn’t make the ground shake at all.
It has been confirmed in the past (by Scott) that Bognok is very tall for his race – seven or eight feet tall, in fact; much taller than any of the other allies except the Rock Giants.
Bognok: “Lofty words from someone who has been a subservient pawn of the nightmare realm for milennia!”
Nicodemus: “I am not a pawn! I’m more of a knight, really, I can fly over pieces to get to my destination.”
Suddenly, a dwarf.
Bognok is quite a bit more than just 4 feet tall. There are some images of him right next to some other characters for reference. However your point is valid as he is striking something with a great deal more mass than him.
And, yes. Physics is fun.
