Page 1030…
Someone on Facebook gave me this phrase while I was trying to come up with some great sayings from old rulers. It really spoke to my “Inner Nicodemus”.
So…thank you AGAIN my wonderful “Fellow Dreamers”!
I finally get to show you this wonderful page.
And tomorrow is how Nicodemus applies this phrase taken by Caligula.
I don’t know if it was from a movie. Or if he actually said it. But it made for good quoting.
๐
I’m sure you all who are smarter than I will set me straight.
Hope you enjoy.
And thanks again for reading…and participating.

Charming sentiment. This is why Nicodemus doesn’t get many party invitations.
Still, I suppose he’s just going with his strengths.
No, Caligula really did say that, but the saying predates him by more than 200 years, so it’s possible that Gaius Julius may have said something similar to Nicodemus.
Since, you know, Old Nic is busy monologue-ing as archfiends are wont to do, this might be a good time for our heroes to take advantage of it.
And I bet the lack of party invitations is part of why he’s so bitter.
Also, nice change on the eye colors from yesterday. I like the new color.
Bet. I bet half my weight in books, that there will be a cliffhanger involving an arrow.
As for Nick, well, he looks like he is having the time of his life taunting the party… I wonder what it is he wants to acomplish by sitting out there in the open. If he was to be attacked, they would have done already…
I’m not going to lie, Month- if Scott was able, I’d be hoping that he’d change the page tomorrow just so you’re wrong. So, if you are wrong, what books are you buying for me? I like John MacArthur and would be more than willing to just tell you pay for some books on the Libronix Digital Library System, and save you the shipping cost. ๐
DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!!!! http://topwebcomics.com/vote/4274/default.aspx
P.S.- Scott, I’ve seen some links that people have for TWC on their comics that actually shows their TWC ranking and live updates as the ranking changes. Have you guys looked into putting that into the “Other Places to See Scott” links section? (see http://www.cealdiancomic.com/index.php and then scroll down to his “Vote for me!” links section)
Interesting that Nick’s hero, or at least mentor, is a human. Great shot of Nick in the last panel.
Has he always been rotten and then just let it out recently, or did we (humans) help to corrupt him, thus unintentionally bringing about our own Dreamland-ruling demise?
That quote ‘Oderint dum metuant’ comes from Emperor Caligula and has nothing to do with Julius Caesar.
Caesar’s famous quotes include ‘veni vidi vici’ (I came, I saw, I conquered) and ‘icta alea est’ (The die is cast)
… “I donโt know if it was from a movie. Or if he actually said it.”
… and so goeth Western Education… (sigh)…
`8 p,
As I understand it, that quote is traced to Suetonius’ biography of the first twelve emperors and is largely met with some criticism of reliability because he based his work on gossip and citations of earlier historians who had lived in the time of the subjects rather than more concrete sources.
The quote comes from Lucio Accio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucius_Accius), in a lost tragedy of him, Atreus, as you can read in one of the final lines of the wikipedia’s article : The line from the Accius’ play called Atreus was often quoted as oderint dum metuant (“let them hate, as long as they fear”), later an infamous motto of Caligula.
Anyway, it fits really well for Nick ๐
By the way, I was wondering : What if you change the first line in page 1028, when Nick address Gaius Julius Caesar and instead change it to Emperor Caligula ? The period is more or less the same (circa 50-70 years more) but the motto would be much more appropriate.
Just a hint, nothing more …
no matter whose quote that really is (nicodemus might have the kings mixed up after over 2000 years, poor guy ๐ ), it’s that kind of attitude that eventually gets you killed. because one day there’ll come somebody who doesn’t fear you. ๐
I’m sure that eventually he’s going to find out just how far that arrogance gets him. not that far, I’d say. ๐
…I was thinking the same thing.
I once worked a “well known quotation” into a major chapter of my last book, only to have someone point out that it wasn’t a real quote, but a made up quote by a political opposition many years after the person’s death. From then on, I take NOTHING for granted and no longer assume that just because it’s widely known, it’s true.
The quotation? “The only thing required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” Commonly ascribed to Edmund Burke. He never said anything of the sort. And a lot of bad people commandeer it and twist it to their own ends.
And I felt like an idiot because I could have learned the reality behind the quote, had I taken fifteen minutes with any search engine ๐
Boy, Nicodemus sure should read the List
Well, judging from the previous page, Nastjia looks like she might forge a plan, since Orion prodded her into action… at least I hope she is.
Yes, I thought that was Caligula. And I assume since there is all this Nicodemus focus then the heroes are off doing something fun and sneaky. We shall see tomorrow I suppose.
last page is intimidating.
scared me a little.
=D
panel* =/
Boy, Nicodemus sure likes to talk doesn’t he ๐
He’s monologueing. Every who’s seen The Incredibles knows what going to happen next ๐
so… you want to make Nick the prodigy of a megalomaniac that burned Rome, and blamed others for his doings? A coward? I think not. After all, Caesar is a much greater and respected leader.
Nero’s actually the emperor who was blamed for burning Rome; Caligula, however, was equally nuts. Julius Caesar, on the other hand, is not someone I’d call nuts–more ambitious and ruthless. I’d say JC fits Nicodemus better than Nero or Caligula.
And Ehol is right–the original quote is from Licius Accius’s lost tragedy “Atreus.”
Latin!!!! *Swooooonthud*
*ahem* Yes, anyhow… ๐ Love the last panel! The flames rising up around him are great!
I had to look back, and reassure myself that Nic was talking about Julius Caesar, and not Caligula. I can see Nic being impressed by a ruthless Machiavellian genius; not so much by a hedonistic schizophrenic.
๐
P.S. Don’t forget to VOTE! http://topwebcomics.com/vote/4274/default.aspx
That’s brilliant! I hope we get an answer someday.
Yep, sounds like a quote which would strike the chord of megalomaniacs everywhere.
I’ve heard something similar to this somewhere also:
BAD DRAGON! NO COOKIE!
I suppose Nicodemus has never spoken with Machiavelli, or he would know better. Also, someone needs to send him a copy of the Evil Overlord Handbook.
“Bad dragon! No amulet!”
Sorry, it amused me. XD;
NIck looks pure bad@$$ in the last panel. I hope Nastajia can wipe that smug grin off his face.
“Inner Nicodemus”? You’re big enough to fit him inside you?!
phew…
the last pannel is definetly one of my favourites!
Aye. Machiavelli warned that though it is better to be feared than loved that you should avoid being hated. Nico’s actions may have created fear but they have also created hatred and the desire to avenge the attacks.
Does it really matter who really said anything? If Nic heard it from Caesar, then to him he is quoting Caesar. It isn’t like everybody famous from history went to Dreamland or those who did go were honest. If they haven’t heard differently, I invented post-its.
It is probably a bad idea to get all your political advice from Caesar and Machiavelli.
Actually, is Nic named after Machiavelli?? *penny drops*
“The quotation? โThe only thing required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.โ Commonly ascribed to Edmund Burke. He never said anything of the sort. And a lot of bad people commandeer it and twist it to their own ends.”
This quote was recently used on the latest cartoon of the Justice League as well …. just a thought had to say it lol
P.S. Keep up the awesome work Scott it is very good and enjoyable to read.
That would be a great plot twist.
AAAAAHHHH!!! The last panel is so terrifying! Great quote, it fit really well.
love the fire..to bad he doesn’t burn himself
?? Why is my comment that I posted early this morning awaiting moderation? Oh, wait, I just figured it out. Silly me. I posted a link as an example for Scott to check out something, and it probably flagged it cause there was a hyperlink in there!
And the other shoe falls to stop it from rolling around. ๐
Hmmm, that thought rather sounds like Book 4 of the Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica. Was it nature? Was it nurture? Or, perhaps a bit of both?
I wish I could click that link.
I believe that Monologuing is rule number 1, in the Evil Overlord Handbook, yes? Or is that making sure to tell your enemy your diabolical plans when you are sure that they can’t escape, only to always have them escape and foil your plans….?
Hmmm… That is an interesting question. I suspect that Nic was just cruel to begin with, but to a much lesser degree than he is showing him self to be now. Then he met some humans and started interacting with them. Eventually the human kings learned of him, and one decided that he should die and set about trying to accomplish just that. Then the next king agreed with his predecessor, and thus a trend started to emerge. After about maybe the sixth Nic might have decided to just take over. Then maybe Arthur Pendragon and Merlin found a way to make Nic sleep for ever as far as they knew at the time. Then eventually along came young Alex and wakes Nic up with either noise or breaking the enchantment by pulling what I am going to continue calling Excalibur out of the stone pedestal.
You know, by this time, Alex could have jumped Nick and dissected him mid-monologue.
I would imagine it’s like like Earth kings. There’s share of tyrants and kind rulers.
The Roman Empire provides a wonderful example:
Tyrants: Caligula, Nero
Kind: Augustus, Marcus Aurelius
Bordeline: Caesar (Tyrant, but he did what was good for the people in general)
He’ll get attacked by a hero (or heroine) while he’s distracted!
I’m going to laugh if he laughs and says “You got me monologuing!”
lol. yeah, with all his yammering, alex could have slain him by now.
I think Nick would be quick on the draw and roast his cute bum crispy.
In the last panel, Ol’ Nick reminds me of former Vice President Dick Cheney in the way he talks through the side of his mouth while his lips stay closed in the front.
Hey, Scott, LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you get the idea…
I’ve only been reading for about a month, and have become totally OBSSESSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am MEGA IMPRESSED by the fire! you must have THE MOST AWESOME version of Photoshop ever to keep those blazes going!
“Somehow, I manage to find cover, and what does Baron von Nickie do? He starts monologuing! He starts, like, this prepared speech about how feeble I am compared to him, how inevitable my defeat is, how the world will soon be his! yada, yada, yada, yammerin’! I mean, the guy has me on a platter, and HE WON’T SHUT UP!”
-adapted “Incredibles” quote so appropriate
I really hope Taja sends an arrow into unpleasant places… then he’ll toss up the amulet in pain, and Kiwi will zip over and catch it… but then, of course, Nickie would probably “wipe them out. All of them.” – Phantom Menace
Sorry, I just LOVE using applicable quotes. I have this insane ability to memorize movie lines. I once had almost all of the LOTR movies down at once =). I know, it’s freaky.
Anyway, may the Dreamland Chronicles “live long and prosper!”
“May Nickie have his own personal plague! Ah-men!”
-adapted Fiddler on the Roof quote *he he he* couldn’t resist
BTW… INCREDIBLE starry night sky goin’ on behind Nickie… I know, TOTALLY random, but still.
wow that really sums up everything Nic is
Strong page, Scott!
Thank you all!
I love reading all of your comments.
ALways know I’m reading them all…even if I can’t find the time to reply every day.
Wow, that last panel…it gives me chills.
๐ Good lord he has the Mad Dragon working for him on that last panel!!! ๐ฎ
Grrrreat work Scott. I feel the whole body like he’s thicker, more muscular… and that phrase… oh, the *tender* sentence!!!! It gives my body the chills…
Now, i’m going to walk away to the fridge to see how they open the, as some would call it, “Whole Whoopass Can”. I’ll bring ya popcorn and soda.
Huh? Weird.
That’s the one I’m talking about: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvilOverlordList
Love Number Nine. Its Hilarious!
Wonderful people, the Romans. Just wonderful…
