Bringing in the real talent…
I’m sorry guys…
I’m just having a REALLY tough time with the design for these posters. And I just want to step away from them for a bit.
So instead of showing more rough images…I’ve decided to show you something that always makes me smile.
Years before he passed away…Mike Wieringo did a cover of The Dreamland Chronicles for me.
I’m pretty sure I’ve shown the final image a few times to you all. But I don’t know if you’ve ever seen his pencils.
So here it is. In all it’s glory.
I never got to meet Mike in person…but spoke to him by phone for hours. He was one of the nicest guys in comics…and I cherish this piece of art very much.
When I look at this page…it makes me wonder how this series would have looked with Mike doing the art.
How cool would THAT have been?
Sorry for the cop-out today. And sorry I’m not ready to put Chapter 14 up yet.
Physically I think I’m a week away from doing pages again. So I’ll keep you updated.
Thanks again for being here with me. And hope you have a wonderful weekend.
Scott
Scott, glad to hear your recovery is going well. It’s sad that such a great person like Mike passed away, but I’m sure he’ll be remembered by his amazing works and his good heart. Wishing the best 🙂
It looks beautiful; and don’t worry, just go at the right pace; don’t want you feeling terrible because you’ve pushed yourself to put something up. You’ll do it eventually. 😀 So don’t worry.
It is definitely a beautiful picture… but I think Dreamland as it is has its own wonderful style. I can’t really imagine it in a different style now. 😛
Thanks for showing us the picture – I loved Wieringo’s Art.
As for you: your health comes first! Don’t push yourself to hard. We’ll just wait (patiently!) until you get better.
Thank YOU for making Dreamland – I hope you’ll have a great weekend, too. 😉
take your time we will be here for you as long as it takes. Please dont push yourself. you will just end up back at square one and then we will have to wait longer. Better to get all better now than risk hurting your back before it is ready.
Take your time, take your time. We’ll be here.
Kiss your wife and hug your kids for us.
Good luck with the recovery, and thanks for letting us see this work. It’s very, very good, and an excellent compliment to the regular work.
I’m so glad you’re feeling better!
And . . . have you thought of using something like that for the backdrop? Expand the panels some – but do three panels instead of two?
Something like this: http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll225/FlaunaFae/bars/dlcbd.jpg
[I absolutely grant that the art is horrid]
Seeing that page, however – totally strikes me as the kind of thing that’d look great as a backdrop – just a little different to tell the story thus far.
Just a thought – but . . . *shrug*
Anyway – glad you’re feeling better!
I hope you get to feeling better soon! Personally, I don’t mind seeing the posters or making of’s. It is neat to see how things start out.
Also, today’s artwork is beautiful.
Take care.
Yes, that’s a beautiful interpretation of Dreamland, especialy considering the sadness behind it as well.
As far as being a week away from starting chapter 14, no worries! Take your time, we’ll still be here!! And we’ll keep beating you over the head with that until you stop apologizing you silly goose!!
I no longer think we’ll be able to get him to stop apologizing. 😛 But we can make sure he knows we’re still here and happy! ^_^
I think you’re right TheDeepDark, no use trying anymore. Back to enjoying the art and building up the excitement of a new epic chapter starting. – The suspense is actually good for everyone, keeps the blood flowing and probably makes the comic even better.
Ringo + Dreamland is golden! Beautiful pencils. It was such a sad day to lose him. I was at Wizard World Chicago, I remember when we found out. 🙁 What a gem to have original art by him of *your* characters! Thanks for sharing!!
So are you going to colour it? Can I colour it for funnsies? Hey…..you should do a Dreamland color book for those who like to color…..yes I still have crayons….dern it.
this drawing still stais so cool
I think this is the bestone, without the collor en everything, but… well I just like drawings more without color and everything^^
Just take your time, man, just take your time. You’ll be better soon enough.
RIP ‘Ringo, you are missed. Thanks for sharing these pencils Scott, his work is, as you are more than aware, AMAZING.
Stop apologizing to us! How many of us told you to get your rear in gear and take a sabbatical in the first place? If you try to work on the comic too early in your recovery, your work will suffer as a result. And i would hate to see your comic slip below your usual insanely high standards. I think right now your work is something you are proud of. I don’t want you to be looking back on any of your work with regret. At least any more than a perfectionist already does. Most web comics only update once a week. If it means you recover faster, i am more than willing to wait that long for a new comic to start. It would be worth the wait in my opinion.
Here’s a suggestion: once you get started making pages again, what about waiting for, say, a week before you start posting them? That way, you have a small buffer of pages to keep going even if you need to take a few days off to rest (or take care of other things).
Thank YOU Scott for putting so much of yourself and your time into entertaining us. =)
Just a thought Scott, about getting those posters right. I don’t know if this would work or not, but if you got some kind of LCD projector like those used for computer-driven slide shows/powerpoint demos, you could project your designs at the size you intend them to be. Granted, you might not be able to get the resolution/color accuracy you can get on your monitor – but it might be good enough to give you a feel for how the design works at the size you’re going for.
With luck, you might be able to find some computer place that will let you try a few images on their equipment, so you can see if it would be worth renting or buying something.
Hmmm. Sounds like you could almost make a case for getting that big projection TV system you’ve always wanted. 😉 (And if you already have one, well if you haven’t found a way to run a display from your computer through it, this would be a good time to try.)
Come to think of it, for what you’re probably going to spend on those posters, you could probably buy an LCD projector and use your MacBook Air to drive it while you’re at shows. All you’d need would be some surface to project on (out of direct sunlight). You could not only run a whole series of images, you could project anything you wanted, including some of those animations you did a while back.
What you could do is, get something like a large banner/sign printed up with “The Dreamland Chronicles”, “Blue Dream Studios”, or “Scott Christian Sava World Tour”, etc. to frame around a large clear white area on which you would project your show. It would be a static backdrop when you turned the projector off, and you could roll it up for transport.
Just a thought. Glad to hear the medical treatments are working – and so are you. Have a good weekend.
Ringo IS one of the all-time greats … as an artist and more importantly as a person … his early departure changes that not one bit either way. He is the kinda guy that all this nice talk AFTER his departure is absolutely no different than BEFORE his departure. One does not have to “romanticize” who he was. He WAS a truly great guy, and he left us all many things of wonder and beauty and stories to tell forever.
Ringo is an all-time great … and you got a piece of his original art … priceless … just like you are to us as well Scott … you too are one of the all-time great guys.
Thanks for sharing yourself with us through your stories and art.
Thank you guys very much.
I apologize for apologizing so much.
🙂
Oh…and Xaxnar…that’s actually a pretty cool idea.
Hmmmmm
Scott –
If you’re interested in my idea, I had a few more points that occurred to me. If you decide to go with an LCD projector….
1) Look at ones with zoom lenses. They’re more expensive, but they let you make the projected image bigger or smaller without having to move the projector back and forth. You can also shrink down the image to make it brighter if there’s a lot of light in the room.
2) I don’t know if this is an available feature, but if you can get a projector with a tripod mount, you can set it up where it needs to go and raise and lower it a lot more easily – as long as you don’t mind lugging a tripod around.
3) If you can set it on its side, you can project your images in portrait mode – taller than wide. (You just have to rotate your images 90 degrees ahead of time so they’ll come out right.) If you can put the projector on a tripod mount, most of those already let you flip the mounting block 90 degrees.
One more thing. If you haven’t scoped it out yet, look at the Apple iWork software package presentation program: Keynote. It is supposed to blow PowerPoint away.

Considering how much of what you’re doing involves computer graphics already, I’d think this could really work for you.
Good luck!
Hi All!
I just have to post on this one! I love this piece of art! Scott doesn’t often show his “emotional side” but he was shocked when he heard about Mike! This art is a sweet reminder of a really nice man!
Enjoy!
We all love and appreciate you so very much!
Donna
Wow this is reaaly great art. I hope u get better soon! 🙂
ringo’s passing was way too soon. his art work was amazing. his run on the flash was classic.
oooommmmgeeee!! thats REALLY amazing Scott use that for a poster!!! it would be EPIC! I mean like the entire story is partically stacked right into that ONE drawing!! its amazing!
Is it just me? Or does picture make me think of Legend of Zelda?
If you think about it, there are some simalier elements. You know, the whole fake ruler, pulling the sword and not coming back for eight (seven in Zelda) years, more-than-one love intrest, old friends, and a princess trying to protect her people?
R.I.P. Mike
I loved Tellos…
