Page 1538…
Hi all!
Tomorrow… we start a flashback.
A flashback that will tell us (FINALLY) what happened to Nastajia’s parents.
I hope you enjoy.
On a side note. These pages (which are filled with colored glass projecting onto the scene, multiple gold reflective objects, water, and so much bounced light you wouldn’t believe) are taking only 4 hours to render per frame.
That’s incredible.
Thank you all for the two workstations. Every day I am reminded of your generosity!
See you tomorrow.
Scott
“It was a dark and rainy night….”
So much going on. Nice job, everyone =)
Woooo! I can`t wait!
And it really shows! Those pages are so beautiful…
I would get a sunburn there!
Nice … we are benefiting from your new computers as well.
After this tale, should Alex give up the sword of the kings, let his brother rule and NEVER come back to Dreamland???
That throne is fabu.
If its going to be a long tale they might want some chairs and snacks…
So I get that the throne is gold (I think), but all that expanse of yellow between/behind the pharaoh and his queen…is that gold as well? And what is it? A golden wall?
Quite so. The offering of hospitality was of great importance in ancient Egypt. For a person of means to not offer refreshment is a huge breach of protocol and manners – especially for a noble or a king.
Rules of etiquette aside – the art here is fabulous! 🙂
Oh…and super excited to hear that the render time has improved by that much! But it makes me really want to replace my computer (which is about 5 years old now and running godawful slow)…which I can’t afford when we’re moving this weekend, picking up our new puppy in a month, and planning a trip to England for next spring. 🙁
Isn’t it inconvenient to have the throne where sunbeams can bother the person sitting in it?
A very, very slow TWC update.

#3: 12,577 <= us
#4: 12,018
Still a week to go, and we're almost #4. Vote!
It might be sunlight shining through gold colored panels in the stained glass ceiling….
But I am puzzled. It looks like the wall panel between the Pharaoh and Queen in panels 2 and 3 is broken. Why would such a thing be allowed in the Throne Room? Does it have symbolic or historical value? Or am I seeing things wrong?
Even as a member of Team Niviene, I can say that the answer to that question is definitively “No!” 🙂 The flashback may not resolve where Nastajia’s parents are now…only a little more of what happened to them. The real quest will likely begin after that, and Alex promised he’d help Nastajia. Even after that quest is complete though (however it ends up being resolved), I’m sure that Dan won’t likely just accept the Sword of Kings from Alex. He’d probably want to work out a solution (or locate Arthur’s solution) that would allow other humans (besides children) to enter Dreamland.
Dan’s a good kid…he wouldn’t break up the first meaningful relationship his brother has had. 🙂 And as someone who has longed for Dreamland all of his life, he wouldn’t deprive his brother of the experience just for his own gain. At least, that’s my opinion on Dan. Scott could still prove me wrong. 😛
Ahh…I was going to post the numbers since you hadn’t commented yet. 🙂 We need to work hard if we’re going to stay ahead of TwoKinds (#4)!!
No…it’s reflective like the throne…though I suppose it could still be yellow stained glass shining on a white reflective surface.
As for the “broken wall panel”…well it looks a little too intentionally shaped IMO to call it “broken,” but I’m sure that either Scott will clarify or we’ll see exactly what it is in one of the upcoming pages. 🙂
How can I enjoy when I’m sure it’ll have a sad ending??? 🙁 *sniffle*
A moment or a month? 😛 Kidding, the important thing is we find out what the heck happened. I LOVE these new backgrounds, and 4 hours of rendering time is VERY impressive.
Flipping back to the previous page, I think there is some kind of gold sculpture or design behind the throne, and we are just seeing the wall beyond that, which is why it seems broken.
But yeah, the gold here is really cool. I especially liked the big statutes from yesterday along the sides of the room, with all the gold details.
Looking forward to the flashback! It’s always interesting reading about the history of Dreamland.
Nice catch! I didn’t even notice those sculptures yesterday! 🙂
For some reason this page reminds me of the opening to “Fresh Prince of Belair.”
Scott, of course we will chip in. Our combined generosity is NOTHING compared to yours. You give us Dreamland.
*Priceless.*
Upon further review, it looks like you can even see a reflection of the room in the gold on the throne. Or is that some kind of relief artwork? Either way, I’m finding more and more details every time I look at the thing.
I’m surprised there’s not a section of Dreamland reserved for teenagers,if you get my drift?
Was it ever mentioned that when children reach a certain age,say thirteen, they CAN’T come back to Dreamland?
Thank you all!
Wednesday’s page got to the very bottom of two of the 3 frames and I noticed a texture that needed tweaking.
Re-rendering. Looks like they’ll finish while I sleep.
So, I’ll upload in the morning.
Random question. Do you have some massive ‘scrap’ file somewhere where you keep all the shots you’re not happy with? Or would that take up excessive amounts of space? Just curious…
However long it takes to render them, these scenes are *awesome*. Kudos to you and your model-writer!
Can’t wait to see the tale of Nastajia’s parents visit!!!
No. If something doesn’t work. I re-render and that file is overwritten.
I am not sure if it was a specific age but I think it has to do with the “loss of innocence” factor. Over time children stop believing in these sort of things so when they fall asleep they can not cross over to dreamland anymore.
I wonder how has living in dreamland affected these people. I mean, normally, a person’s dream-self goes to dreamland while the physical body remains in the waking world, but these people are descended from (if they aren’t the originals themselves) people who came here with their real physical bodies.
Do you mean “affected” as in life-span? That’s a pretty good question, though I halfway expect that they live their lives normally (insofar as living in a section of a dream world where you can use both magic and science to improve your lifestyle is “normal”) and are not significantly impacted by their location.
