Page 1510…
Hi all!
Sorry for the delays.
This scene and all of the clouds and such…
Well…I wanted it to look nice.
🙂
I have a few things to talk about:
1) First things first…
Thank you Stefano for once again bringing my dreams to life.
Seraphopolis has been something I’ve wanted to see come to life for many years.
We’re working on the actual city for chapter 18. The blending of Egyptian, Dreamland, and Steampunk is something really cool I’m looking forward to seeing.
2) The Guardians (the descendents of Ramses II) are being rigged by Juan Carlos and HOPEFULLY will be done by this weekend so I can get the last 1 pages done.
If there’s a delay on Monday (there won’t be a page tomorrow)…that’s why.
3) This video game project I’m working on.
I’m currently Art Directing, Producing, Game Designing, Voice directing, Writing, and a bevy of other things that would normally kill a lesser man (joke).
The point is. This is the FIRST major paying gig I’ve had since starting Dreamland 10 years ago.
Well…since Predator Concrete Jungle (whenever that was).
I’ve set things up so I can remain home and continue to work on Dreamland.
I WILL finish this story.
But I ask that you please continue to be patient with me during this time.
The income will allow me to finish Dreamland. And that’s a good thing.
🙂
There’s going to be a hiatus between chapters as I gather the assets (models) and write the script.
I’ll check in daily.
In the meantime. See you on Monday.
Scott
Looks awesome! And allthe projects sound awesome!
You’re just full of awesome today. 🙂
It’s like if Minas Tirith was in Skyloft. That is possibly the coolest skyland I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen quite a few.
Seraphopolis looks gorgeous – although Paddington’s arrival may put some real stress on their support systems.
As for all of the projects you’ve taken on, I am shocked, shocked I tell you to learn that mere money could have such a hold on you. Next you’ll be telling us you’re buying shoes for the kids and trying to put food on the table. 😉
Seriously, paying gigs are what make the good stuff possible – and if you enjoy doing them, well that’s just a bonus. Congratulations on being good enough at what you do to get paid for it!
I’ll be glad to put up with some minor inconveniences in exchange for you and yours continuing to do well. Good luck!
xaxnar
Go, Scotty, Go! Go for the monies! 🙂 Glad you’ve found something to get some fill for your purse. I for one can take a hiatus, so go on with that adventure. Sounds great.
Will we meet Lando? 🙂
The guardians have wings? Cool! Must’ve used their magic to enhance their flying abilities. And now they look like our conception of angels. I almost missed them at first.
The city reminds me of the light castle at the end of Dark Crystal, and that is pure AWESOME! I’m glad you scored that video game job and all the money it’s bringing in. Dreamland is worth delays as long as you are financial secure and all the new characters and backgrounds should be very fun to look at. I’ll pick up the game first thing when it comes out, no matter what it is.
Looks kinda small. No wonder the seriphopolians have been spying on the real and dream worlds. After a few thousand years stuck on a tiny sky island, you just sorta need to live vicariously through someone else.
Is it just me, or was getting here way too easy? LOL.
Reminds me of Atlantis from the eponymous Stargate franchise.
I jokingly alluded it’s resemblence to Angel Island, the floating island in the Sonic the Hedgehog series before. Seeing up close I reminds me of Eden from Darksiders.
That or the Ivory Tower from the Neverending Story movie.
Seraphopolis is simply beautiful, breathtaking, in fact. I’ve been looking forward to his page for quite awhile now. You’ve done an excellent job as usual. 🙂
As for your other projects, you have to feed your family. Hans and I are very, very happy this opportunity came forward for you. I am sure your family is thrilled.
We know you will be here for Dreamland, but you have to strike a balance. We’re so privileged that you share your story with us each day. The originals hanging in our living room stimulate a lot of conversation when we have friends and new friends over. I’m pretty sure that the guy who just installed our sound system earlier this week is a new reader. It’s one of my campaigns to recruit new Dreamies. 🙂
Awesome is all I have to say!
-Tink
Seraphopolis!
Seraphopolis!
Seraphopolis!
It’s only a model…
Shhh!
I waited a few years between reading the first book of Dreamland( a gift from a friend) and discovering it was a webcomic I could read online and getting all caught up. I think I can handle another wait. have fun! and thank you, so much, for everything.
I’m thinking Bhujerba from FFXII myself… time to go rustle up a bottle of madhu
let’s not go to Seraphopolis. It is a silly place.
holy cow scott you totally rock, Seraphopolis is awesome from that distance…. cant wait to see it up close. i sencond what Tink said. jus awesome
Somehow this is what I expected. I always thought it would be white… but don’t get me wrong, even though it didn’t exceed my expectations, I still think it’s beautiful.
Can’t wait to see the city itself!
A word of advice… don’t tell them you actually ENJOY the work. Let them pay you for having fun 🙂
They still have to get IN, and the Seraphopolians (?) might not be too keen on visitors. Or maybe they are….I can`t wait to see them!
actually, now I’m looking at it more, I’m seeing Laputa from Miyazaki’s “Castle in the Sky.” I’m sure once we get into the city it will seem more and more familiar, what with all the steampunky aspects of that movie… hopefully there’s no blue crystal that can disassemble the sucker with a single word =8^O
He, wait. You are right, when i first watched the page i did think that where just a couple of birds. Noting to look at it. But now i see body’s indeed.
Nice, nice cant wait to read the next pages.
asgard!
I can hear the song “Wheel in the Sky” by Journey playing as our heroes approach the floating city….! 😉
I missed them entirely, so thanks for making that comment. Hmm, flying Egyptians… maybe their wings are one of the steampunk bits.
That. Is so. Cool.
Woo-hoo, that’s gorgeous.
Feel free to take as much time on the game project as necessary. Hiatus, change in posting schedule, whatever is needed. We’ll still be here. 🙂
Cool! Looking forward to what’s coming…
First off, let me say BEAUTIFUL page!!
However, I think our heroes got there just a wee bit too fast. I think you need another page showing them riding the stones and looking up in awe and amazement. Just my not-so humble opinion.
So, was it the underside of Seraphopolis that they could see back on page 1408??
AWWWW. Literally.
Niviene, Niviene! There’s something flying there! Above the island so high that nobody can fly up to it… or so you’ve said…
Now, the inevitable. TWC. We’re still #3 with 15,150 votes. They’re still #2 with 15,927. I’m not expecting many of us to come and vote during the hiatus, but… we still can say, ‘Thanks, Scott!’ by bringing The Dreamland Chronicles to #2 by the end of this month.
Are you up to this, friend Dreamie? Then, VOTE!
oooh! pretty!!
Hopefully Darth Vader isn’t waiting there to attack!
Tch, he’d have to alter the deal to do that.
Please. We all know nothing can fly that high up. Therefore, if those people are flying so high up, they can’t be real. It’s simple logic.
I think someone said it another way previously, but I think it’s the difference between being able to fly up TO it, and being able to fly around the place once you’re already there.
Kinda like trying to swim out to the middle of an ocean. You’ll probably get yourself killed before you get anywhere close, but if you happen to be there alraedy, it’s not too hard to just swim around in circles there.
Scott! You really made my day! first this awesome page! Second, all the awesome news. Third, the announcement that you will finish the story and even though the delays you will check up daily. seriously, youre my favorite webcomicartist! You rock! This page is very cool! It looks awesome and actually gives me a feeling as if i am watching atlantis. And thats a hood thig. The clouds, the lightning, the feeling! Great work!!!
This reminds me of the remake of Planet of the apes… when he “returns”, just to find the arch villain sitting on the throne of what he though was going to be his salvation.
Will we find Nic sitting by the Pharao/King of Seraphopolis? Or even ON the throne?
“Ah, there you are! I have been expecting YOU for quite a while now…!!! Muahahahahaa!”
In Niviene’s own words, ‘All have limits to the heights they may fly.’ She’s obviously talking about the absolute ceiling. At least, that’s how Alex understood her. No objection from the smarter members of the crew followed.
Real or not, they do fly, don’t they? 🙂
Pray he doesn’t alter it even further.
I’m thinking Skyward Sword 🙂
Hey this looks fantastic Scott! Well done!
Also, congratulations on the job! If you need any other people I do have a little game experience. Well ok, I made an iPad game. But still … I coded and did art and stuff!!
It’s hard to get a sense of perspective on the city. Is most of the city hiding behind what we can see here, are those skyscrapers actually much (MUCH) further behind the trees and railings that are in the foreground, or is it actually not that big? It would make sense that there probably wasn’t a huge human population in dreamland considering there wasn’t a huge human population in Egypt at the time, either.
Long time reader – first time comments – Totally amazing what you have been able to do over the years . I have no problems with someone who has graced our lives with such delightful work haveing it rewarded by a paying task that will support his family . More power to you .
HOORAY!!! for the paying gig, regular income is such a wonderful thing to have! The rest will wait, take care of your family and we’ll still be here, waiting impatiently for our fix 🙂
Plus, it’s too far to jump from there.
Last two comments were so full of win that I’m having trouble scrolling further down. 😀
It kinda does….minus being on the water of course. 🙂
Haha! Now that’s going to be stuck in my head all morning. Thanks for that! 😛
Ooo…good analogy! Makes sense to me!
Well phooey! Comic #2 must have had a voting campaign or something, because they’re almost a full 1000 votes ahead again. 🙁 Vote Dreamies!!
Well Serapholpolis is pretty awesome (as has been stated multiple times already). I’m primarily amused by how many people feel it reminds them of some other fantasy city from tv/movies/video games. 🙂
I dunno, I don’t see Laputa…Laputa is yellowed with age and it’s built around an enormous tree.
No Vader here, but I bet ol’ Nico is.
You and Bennel win.
that’s because this is part of the “floating city in the clouds” archetype/trope. They’re all bound to remind/represent/influence one another.
I refuse to believe it! Don’t believe it! Don’t be taken in by their trickery!
But as long as they stay above the city, they are only a few hundred feet up?
Over the holiday weekend, please don’t forget to vote for your favorite webcomic, Fellow Dreamies. We’re still at #3, and we don’t want to lose momentum over the Memorial Day weekend (for those of us who are in the USA). Vote here: http://topwebcomics.com/vote/4274/default.aspx
They’re gaining speed. 15,772:16,996. 🙁
For some reason I keep thinking that Serapholpolis should be Emerald green. Will there be a wizard of some sort hiding behind a curtain?
Those bird-things must be _enormous_!
Very impressive! I particularly like the machinery sticking out underneath…
I do hope that it is merely steam coming off that valve at the front… Otherwise, it would be rather hard to keep the city’s location a secret… Seraphopolis? Suuure… just follow the trail of (X)…
Of course, there’s still the issue of not being able to fly high enough, but still…
This page is yet another example of the kind of majestic scenery Scott has been blessing us with. I simply love it!
waterfall optional, lol.

At 11am CST (9am PST and 12pm EST) I’ll be doing a live video interview for charity.

Please come by and say hi!
One word for this page: BEAUTIFUL.
Wow, this would make a wonderful wall poster!
Hi all!
Hope you had a wonderful weekend so far.
I had no idea (the downfall of being self employed) that this was a 3 day weekend.
I’ll have the next page up Tuesday.
Donna has me doing family stuff.
🙂
I looked at your comment and went “yeah, you’re right, it looks nothing like Laputa”…
then I realized why I thought that… it reminded me of the scene where you come up from underneath it (until the city breaks apart you can only see the very top canopy of the tree), and couple that with the flying robot guardians. It doesn’t look like it per se, but it sure reminds me of it.
What do the people of Seraphopolis do when they want a holiday?
Is it just me, or does Seraphopolis look like a bird’s head to anyone else?
TWC update. Us: 16,682. Them: 17,922.
Weekends. I hate weekends.
Eeee, guds, whatsa meesa sayin?!
Vote, fellow Dreamies!
amazing
so the first thing I thought of is “OH GOD it’s Soda Fountain! The Thirstquencher Empire is so gonna get a pounding!” then I realized two things: wrong architecture, and Musashi is nowhere.
I was wondering if that might be the case, Scott. 🙂 Enjoy your break and your family!
Page will update on Tuesday morning. Still rendering some last bits.
Hope you all had a wonderful weekend.
Yeah, I can see it too. Though the bird is facing in a very bad and rather logical direction for a floating island to go.
Maybe it’s like the Hotel California.
You can check in, but you can never leave… ;o)
(Was joking – but there could be something to that. Isn’t this supposed to be a place that is in neither Dreamland or the real world, whose denizens are isolated from both? Maybe Dan will have to come to Dreamland to try to learn why Alex can’t be awakened…)
16,825 : 18,058 🙁
My first thought was the Ayleid architecture in Oblivion. I’ve been playing that rather a lot, lately.
The Kingdom of Zeal! Chrono Trigger!
Wait a second…. Wasn’t Lavos said to visit the people of Zeal in their dreams to bring them under his control?
