Page 1225…
Happy Monday!
Today (more or less…I can never remember the exact date) is our FIVE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!
Five years ago today I tried something new. I put my comic book The Dreamland Chronicles (of which I had 3 issues produced) online daily.
At first…it was just me and my family coming to the site.
Then slowly…a new reader here. A new reader there.
Links from generous established webcomics like InverlochΒ and EarthsongΒ helped tremendously.
I soon realized…I found a HOME for Dreamland.
Not in comic shops. But here…online.
I’ve been blessed to meet such wonderful people from all over the world thanks to this decision to go online.
It’s completely changed our lives.
I just wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU to all of you who have been reading along with me for the last 5 years (or those of you who this is your first time here).
Thank you for making this a wonderful experience. And hopefully we’ll see this to the end…and beyond.
Have a wonderful day!
Scott
That will hurt. I wonder who will save the day.
THIS is The Moment when it pays off to have a long, wobbly neck! B-D
Happy anniversary Scott – and many more for you and yours. Thanks for bringing Dreamland to life.
i just hope it won’t be too near, that end. It’s so good!
I’ve been here about six months, it all flew by until I hit the current posts, now two days without a new page is like five years, but keep it coming, it hurts so good… π
Happy anniversary Scott! (And GAH! Two cliffhangers in a row! :P)
Congrats Scott! I hope you have many more successful years coming π
((and this has got to be one of the worst cliffhangers I’ve ever known! :P))
And what better way to celebrate your 5th anniversary than by placing one of the main characters in mortal peril? π Happy Anniversary, Scott!!
Happy Anniversary Scott!
Thank you.
Tomorrow’s page…Nastjia does the Matrix bend backwards in slow motion move.
π
I was thinking Kiwi would pull some sort of ‘gotcha’ move and snag the arrow.
Nice cliffhanger. π (New here. Just read the archives over the last few days after arriving via an ad on another comic I read. This comic is amazing.)
Thanks Scott for 5 years (OK – I missed a couple of year in the beginning) of entertainement and high blood pressure with your friday cliffhangers π
naw, she’s good, it’s close, but it’ll just miss her!
I couldn’t agree more!
Congratulations on 5 years!! Has it been a quick 5 or a long 5? XD
Congrats on 5 years! π Thank you for sharing your story with us!
THANK YOU for 5 years of this wonderful comic
Welcome, fellow Dreamer!
“Oh shi-” would fit much better with that expression.
I wonder if Scott if a fan of those Hong Kong/Bruceploitation martial arts films?!?;):)
Wishing you a happy five years on the comic!:D
Aw crap… well, that’s not good.
As always, great stuff. π
This page looks great! Lot of action, and love N’s look! Although, the first panel has something at the end of her nose that looks like a HUGE buggar!
π
Thanks for providing all of us a great comic for the last 5 years!
I don’t know — without any words the expression on her face looks more like she’s happy and surprised to see a long lost friend. This comic overall is good ( I keep reading it ) but this character more often seems like a plastic barbie doll. She somehow needs to develop more range of expression (iho)
Anyway this is the first and probably last critical thing I will post about this comic — free is good, con’t complain.
Congratulations, Scott! It really doesn’t seem like five years… π
been spending too much time at lab to go online @ home, and been fighting the urge to go on all my usual time waster sites on lab computer. this site and facebook were the only 2 where i lost the battle and opened @ lab anyways =P experiencing this “must wait a day to see what happens” cliffhanger w/ everyone is well worth it XD
I was going to comment “Remember, there is no spoon” but I guess I don’t have to now because that’s what’s coming. π
Dear Scott, Congradulations on five great years! You have got a great story here and I really look forward to seeing how it (& Everything!) plays out! Best wishes for the future!
Happy Anniversary. I only found this comic recently, liked it so much I got caught up with 5 years worth of publications in a few scant days, I am gonna remain a fan for life. Love it.
PS. Elves have great reflexes, I suggest she dodge…fast!
Happy anniversary. I have a 28th anniversary coming up later this week.
But that’s like five years in comic years, isn’t it?
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!! And thank you for all your hard work, the effort, time, money and dedication you put in Dreamland Scott!! (and family) It`s been a blast to follow the story every day for so long. π I wish you and Dreamland all the best for the years to come!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DREAMLAND CHRONICLES!!!
I believe the “booger” you see there is part of the castle in the background.
I see that as more of a “my life just flashed before my eyes” look.
Wow! Five years!
And of course 1225 pages, every weekday with only a handful of exceptions.
Congratulations, Scott.
DLC is my favorite webcomic – the great writing, beautiful art, humanity, humour – *and* the fact that I can share it with my kids
Also:
What a cliffhanger!
My bet’s on Kiwi bodyslamming that thing to the ground before it hits, or one Very nasty scar that “adds character” like Calvin’s dad from Calvin & Hobbes always says.
When the time comes, tell her your friends in Dreamland said happy anniversary, and congrats on putting up with you for so long …
π
Thank you for making the comic! I’ve enjoyed reading it for the past…three years now? Wow, has it really been that long?
Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing how the story turns out. π
This certainly takes less than 5 years to read the full comic. Could you hurry up things a bit ? π
Ok, I gotta say . . . I am SO glad you didn’t use this page for over the weekend. π I would have gone crazy wondering what happens.
Been a great few years, Scott! I wasn’t around in the beginning, but I’ve really enjoyed reading through the archives and anticipating each and every new page.
Hope you have a great day!
looks like deer in headlight look to me, which i think is a totally acceptable expression to have when you’re surprised by an arrow about to pierce ur pretty face =3
Great art work Scott!
Thanx for letting us enjoy it!
Keep up the good work (and don’t forget to post the vote link every time you publish a new page. Let us guide your work on the top!!!)
According to the archives, it began on December 25th, 2005. That makes it Christmas day, a rather ironic date to forget.
Happy Anniversary anyways, Dreamland!
No, wait, that’s the introduction part that I was looking at. The comic actually started on January 5th, it seems.
Congratulations on 5 years! I’ve been reading for about 4 and half and look forward to it everyday.
Yay!!! Congratulations, Scott!! Definitely look forward to reading your comics every day, to the point of checking them in the wee hours of the morning before I go to sleep. Thank you~!
That’s going to hurt in the morning.
Thank you all for the warm wishes!
You guys make the experinece so wonderful.
This is when she thinks to herself… “I know helmets are not stylish but why oh why didn’t I wear one!”.
Or maybe she is going to become a one eyed queen of the pirates elf! woot!
I’ve only been along for the past year and a half, but it’s been a great ride so far!!
Hey Nastajia, duck yer head!!
i love the dramatic shot in the last panel.
congrats on 5 years! hope the comic keep on going for year to come π
Happy “Birthday” to theDreamlandCHronicles.com !
Thanks for all the fun, and all the fun that is yet to come.
Damn you! Now I’m imagining that long neck of her bending down like it was made of rubber!
People always have enough time to acknowledge their impending doom but never enough time to avoid it.
That is the rule of every fiction thing ever.
Ive spent the last couple weeks reading all 16 chapters, I’m in love with the uniqueness of it. It was a welcome addition to my weekly readings of Unshelved wich is how i found your comic. Happy anniversry!
OH. NO. !!!!!!!!
Really, it’s been five years? I haven’t been around the whole time, but that quite an accomplishment! Cheers to however many more years it takes for the rest of Dreamland!
Good job, 5 years ain’t bad at all! May this webcomic live long and prosper!
Oh.
My.
Gosh!
Look out Nastajia!
On a happier note Happy Anniversary! =D
Duuuuuude… such a cliffhanger! Watch out, Staj! O.o
Seriously, I’ve been reading ALL of the archives the past couple weeks after I saw your guest page that you did for Red String. I’ve fallen in love with this story from the day I discovered it. Seriously, I wish I could travel to Dreamland! Keep up the awesome work!
Also, happy anniversary!!! This comic deserves to celebrate 5 years of awesomeness!
So basicly when I first found this place like um not sure how short a time its been. I just read thru 5 years worth in 2 days? *joins Nastaj in her “gasp” look*
Do you know what would be the worst thing ever? If the whole serious, the comic, and everything, ended right with this page.
I mean series.
I made a motivation poster :p

I strongly disagree. She expresses herself alot. Nastaj appears to be more a woman of action not words. I can always tell what she could be thinking *looks at todays comic* well…okay most the time. ^^;
thanks for your work, it is, as allways, a little holiday to watch
Some feedback for you Scott.
In the last panel, the arrow does look a bit too big.
Either, it is the size of a spear, OR, it is closer to the “camera” than Nastajia is, and if so, it would miss her.
Especially looking at page 1226, when (spoiler info removed) has (s.i.r.), it looks as if it shrunk.
Secondly, you could do something about where Nastajia’s eyes are focusing. True, given the incredible speed of an arrow, her eyes would most likely not be quick enough to follow its motion, nor to “converge” on it in such short time, but this is a comic and you could pretend its possible to do that, and let her. As it currently is, she seems to be looking above and behind the arrow. IMO, she should be more focused on the tip of the arrowhead, but I leave the final work detail to you, of course!
Five years… My God!!! Such an incredible show of commitment, Scott! You must love this even more than we fans do! WAY TO GO!!!!
Ummm–not a “her”–lots of confreres. “monk”, you know…
Lol!
that’s great!
Thanks Bezman!
Ack! Sorry!
That’s what I get for assuming instead of thinking …
π³
And this is where Nastajia has her “bullet time” dodge. Or would it be “arrow time?”
Some good comic relief is always fine. π
Scott has been clear that he is thinking in terms of movie. Standard television is 24 frames per second. Saying all of Nastajia’s lines takes more than 2 seconds. Images 2 and 3 have to span at least 48 images. Her facial features would be moving around a lot more.
In frame 2 Nastajia shoulders are perpendicular to the incoming arrows (orion off right shoulder). In that stance an arrow could land in her vocal cords and exit/stick by the third or fourth vertebrae. In frame 3 Nastajia’s shoulders are parallel to the arrows (Orion to back). Her eyes are also focussed far behind the arrow. The “gasp” fits a fraction of a second earlier than the image we see. Nastajia saw an incoming point and then rotated and leaned back.
@Scott
The water streaming off of the arrowhead is wrong. But it does look good so you should probably keep it.
It is supposed to be closer. The size fits fine. Check out this one for sale on the internet:

http://www.by-the-sword.com/acatalog/Medieval_Arrow_Shaft_FB-AS.html
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_average_horizontal_iris_diameter
The shaft is 3/8 inch diameter and comes up to 29 inches long. The arrow shaft is a few pixels wider than Nastajia’s iris. Modern sport arrows are thinner and lighter. The purpose is to kill so having some weight in the shaft helps drive the arrow deeper. If you had a height advantage, like standing on a wall, you might select an even heavier arrow.
You cannot see arrows, cannon shells, or sling bullets unless they are coming straight at you. (Obviously you can see them before firing and after they arrive). Nastajia saw an arrow and dodged it. Scott was correct to put her eyes focussed at a point in the distance where the arrow had been. She also shifted over. Notice the water flinging off of her face. Once her eyes moved out of the direct path there was nothing she could focus on.
No problem–married people are lots more common than monks, so it was a reasonable assumption. π
And Scott takes a page from Harry Turtledove and kills off a leading character two-thirds of the way into the story.
I was thinking that Orion saw the arrow and would use his staff to deflect the arrow. But a dodge move works if you have (feat) lightning reflexes and roll a nat. 20. π
