Page 1093…
Hi all!
So I think today’s the LAST day I’ll have this wallpaper up.
So if you’d like to get it…get it now.
Tomorrow I have something NEW for you.
I hope you’ll like it.
🙂
And another reminder. 6 new songs on the Jukebox for you all.
So glad you’ve liked the songs (for those that mentioned listening to them already).
And finally…
I’ll have the store up this week. Promise.
Some great deals I think you’ll really like.
Hope you liked today’s page. I love the interaction between the two characters.
The power play is fun to write.
And for those that were wondering…Nicodemus is genuinely doing what he thinks is best. He has no “evil machinations” in play here.
I think that’s what makes him so much cooler.
🙂
Ho! Arthur is getting pissed off!
The Dragon should be aware that he can get his ass kicked.
And if I was Nick, I would get out of there, prepare my forces and launch an attack… At the exact time when there will be no king on Dreamland…
Warn? No, you advised him, Nic. And now Nicodemus is openly threatening Arthur, which probably means he’s about to attack. If he doesn’t, very soon, then Arthur will be a fool to fall for whatever trap Nic has planned.
For shame, Nicodemus! You’re an advisor. You’re supposed to council and advise, not WARN. *finger shakes at the dragon*
OH! Burn! Yeah,
Arthur – “I don’t care if you are a fire breathing monstrosity. You do not speak to your king in such a manner! This is treason of the highest accounts! How DARE you speak to me thus? I have brought a way to transmit knowledge between our cultures and you THREATEN me? I will not allow this, fiend! Merlin was right, you are not to be trusted.” *Throughs down gauntlet* “I chalenge you to single combat at high noon. All rules of honor and engagement WILL BE UPHELD. You will pay for your treachery.”
Nic – *Breathes fire, goes back to the court* Ehem, there has been an unfortunate accident. The king has fallen…SICK. Unfortunatly, Arthur will be unable to join us further. He has bestowed all rights of kingship on me until such time as he is well enough to partake in his duties. I must ask you to leave here now.
I loved that “Excuse me?” bit. He has been king a long time and he no longer feels like a young man who depends on the Dragon to tell him what is best. Now he is an adult, AND king. No one speaks to him like that, not even a DRAGON…
Haha, he said travesty.
There’s only one problem I have with today’s comic, and that is King Arthur saying “EXCUSE me?” I understand where he’s coming from but it is such a 21st century phrase! It doesn’t sit with me well at all to be the speech and manner of a medieval (albeit mythological) king, and when I read it his voice has suddenly completely changed in my head from the majestic king of England to an American sitcom actor.
Other than that though I am really enjoying where this is going.
I can answer both of Nic’s first questions with one answer: Arthur’s haircut.
As for “vehemently warn,” it was more of a furtive dismissal at best.
War declared.
Now the tragedy takes its course.
Just read all of dreamland from start to finish wow great read
what would have helped them both: talking about WHY they both think that their opinion is the right one. if arthur knew why nic doesn’t want the humans there and nic tried to understand why arthur wants his enemies (of all people… XD) to visit, then just maybe they could have avoided this fall-out…
and in the first panel it almost looks like arthur is sporting a mohawk haircut. 😀
what would a medieval king say instead of “excuse me”?
Arthur: “You forget your place, dragon.”
Nicodemus: “And you forget you are crunchy and good with ketchup.”
Not a story question but a technical question. You said you reused some character designs for financial reasons the other day. Can you do palette swaps on existing character designs? Change someone from a brunette to a blonde, re-color their costuming, re-do eye color, that sort of thing? While not as nice as all new designs, it could give you some additional flexibility.
… and Arthur finds himself looking up – WAY up – at Nicodemus. After not realizing how dangerous this dragon can be, Arthur is now in BIG trouble.
oh boy. And so it begins???
Nic shoulda been more diplomatic XD he just lost his subtlety advantage
Hahaaaa, okay, this one made me laugh.
Somehow, I don’t thing Nic is going to take kindly to being put in his place.
“well excuse me, princess” 😀
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thoUkHH-Njc ” well excuuuuuse me princess” 😀
Perhaps a very British sounding, “I beg your pardon!” 🙂
I didn’t even notice that the phrase was modern. I’m betting that anyone reading it all the way through at once will be sufficiently caught up in the tension of the moment to a) not notice, or b) not care. 🙂
Heeheehee….awesome.
Hm. What would you suggest?
Thank you. ANd welcome.
🙂
Especially if his place is small, outside on the castle lawn, and shaped oddly like a canine’s residence. 🙂
Yes I can.
I try to do that from time to time.
You know, prior comments on how 21st century a phrase like “excuse me” is aside, I have expect Nic to return with “Oh no you dih’nt!” (perhaps insert a 90’s era finger snap with the phrase, too). 😛
Ermmm…and by “have expect” I meant “HALF expect.” 😉
LOL!
I’d love to do that.
Perhaps “I beg your pardon?”
It does sound British and Arthur IS British even if medieval Brits may not have spoken that phrase. But it does sound a bit more incredulous.
i have a Question Scott what 3-D Program do you use to Render your Art
LOL, Arthur’s going to make some new dragonskin shoes. It’d be great to see a throwdown, but I don’t think we’ll see it here. At least, not yet.
Hey Revan.
3D Studio Max and Brazil rendering.

I don’t see his language or stance as threatening. Just exasperated.
Realistically, Arthur would be speaking Old English, which is basically unreadable to most modern English speakers. I don’t mind him using a more modern turn of phrase, as long as it doesn’t imply familiarity with something from a later time.
i agree! Why can’t they just talk things out like adults? >=[
Nic looks…taken aback in that last panel there. The dragon has a serious authority complex.
Under most circumstances, telling the king that he is a fool is not a good idea. But I guess when you’re a dragon measuring at several times the king’s height, an exception can be made. Speaking of height ratios, what is the difference in their heights?
boom! Go Arthur!
but yeah, i think “I beg your pardon” would sound better here, honestly. it’s a good in between of Old English like Tom Flapwell was saying and the more modern “excuse me. “
Agreed. I think “Excuse me?” is perfect.
Welcome, fellow Dreamer!
Don’t forget to show Scott your support by heading over to TWC every day to VOTE!
Hahahaha Yeah; somehow they always forget that detail.
Mayhaps something better should be….
“What did you say to me?”
I think Arthur does not realize how badass Nick is, or has forgotten if he ever knew. And probably believes that his counselor would not actually move AGAINST him, which will give Nicodemus the chance to strike first. And when you’re a Dragon, first strike can often mean LAST.
Nicodemus appears to me to be about the size of a really big elephant or possibly T-Rex, which means that he weighs in at perhaps 8-10 tons versus Arthur who’s probably a big man at perhaps 6’6″ and 250 pounds.
HOWEVER, in Dreamland there’s a lot of questions we haven’t had answered. If the King of Dreamland gets to, in effect, control events something like I can control my dreams, he can pull the Superman Gambit and match blows with something that size.
This will not, unfortunately, do him much good if Nicodemus strikes first and strikes hard.
Nic should’ve just answered the “why not?” question a few pages ago rather than just claiming it’s impossible insanity. Oh well!!
See also: Anybody who doesn’t listen to Merlin’s warning is invariably doomed!
Same here.
I detect a definite increase to the intensity here… COOL!
This reaction to the page is awesome. In the third panel, it certainly looks like Nic wants to breathe some fire at the king!
*hides behind a dwarf before it’s too late*
Temperature rising. This should get interesting.
BTW, I had no trouble with Arthur’s “excuse me.” Seemed to fit just fine with the overall speech patterns of Dreamland.
Oh that last panel will make seeing Nick stand on two legs for the first time That Much More Epic 😀 Arthur, you may be a king, but that is a very dangerous creature you are speaking with, I’d tread with caution.
Although it’s an extremely common theme these days to have the average person rise up to greatness (Alex becoming king of Dreamland one day), I suppose Arthur deserves seeing someone like him be his sucessor after not taking the crucial advise of Nick.
Arthur is rather gutsy. I’m sure it all comes with being king when sleeping and when awake, but you have to be either mindlessly stupid or mindlessly badass to face down a dragon several times your size.
Nicodemus is so INTENSE! We haven’t see him in such a state before and he is SCARY! It looks as if he was ready to snap! I agree with Random Bird, Aurthur is rather gusty to talk back to a dragon like that.
hmm, I thought I wrote more…. just wondering, is it possible that part of my comment was censored…???
And here I was hoping we’d all find out that the Dragon’s origin was from the Nightmare Realm and he was deviously plotting to take over Dreamland and create a secondary Nightmare Realm so that all children would be in a perpetual nightmare when sleeping. 😉
In all seriousness, this is a most interesting and unusual development, Scott. I’m looking forward to seeing more of it!
First two panels are win. Seeing how quickly Nic lost his temper the moment there was no one (besides Arthur ) watching was awesome to see, and his words and body language are great. And I adore Arthur’s expression in the second panel. He’s not only surprised at Nic talking to his king like that, he’s also got the whole ‘Why are you angry? I did a good thing!’ look. Just terrific.
Well We know from Nic is playing King of Dreamland since Arthur is somewhat indisposed… And well Nic was going to go chat with Arthur again so I am assuming that this didn’t turn out well in the end for Arthur… I do believe Nic see’s himself more a regent than a advisor as Artur “wakes up” and Nic is still in Dreamland. So I am assuming in the near future we will be seeing Arthur and Nic duking it out for the Kingship… or will Nic be sneaky and poison Arthur or some other underhanded trick up his scaly sleeves….
I vote for “I beg your pardon?”. It’s closer to the Old English the “real” Arthur would have spoken (which would be incomprehensible to all but the most literate among us, so this is the best compromise).
Yeah, me too. This is like a translation of Old English conversations. Remember, if the sword tried to tell this story to Alex in the Old English style, it would go waay over Alex’s head. Personally, I like ” ‘Excuse me?’ “
And for those that were wondering…Nicodemus is genuinely doing what he thinks is best. He has no “evil machinations” in play here.
From everything I understand about Dick Cheney, he genuinely did what he thought best too…
What did you just say?!?!? Someone behead this traitor!
As much as i agree with the sentiment you wouldn’t use an everyday sauce like ketchup on a king. If he was a common knight, then sure but a king deserves a sauce with a bit more bite (pun intended). Maybe a bit of HP sauce or there is a really nice spicy Jack Daniels sauce that I reckon would go awesomely with him.
But that’s just my opinion on what condiments are good when serving up some king
Why do I think that its about to be Arthur that learns “his place”
Show ‘im who’s the boss Arthur! But do it quietly, it’s a Dragon we’re talking about. You don’t want to anger a Dragon.
Oh, and one thing is evil intentions and other different thing is evil morals. I think Nicodemus might know he’s not behaving properly, but still does what he does because he thinks “it’s the only way”. The only way who knows what for.
…some of you are forgetting this is no ordinary king.
It’s Arthur Pendragon. You might want to read in depth about how many butt he can kick -or how big the size of said butt is before it meets his boot.
I mean, ok, Nic is a red huge scary dragon. But Arthur has the Sword, the Armor, and besides, Merlin trained him…
if this is a fighting sequel, it’s going to be beaaaaaaautiful.
He suffered a tragic case of Burnt to a Crisp. 98% fatality rate, no cure.
