I want to wish my lovely wife of 16 years a happy….
…wait for it…
…FORTIETH BIRTHDAY!
Yes. Today…Donna’s the big 4-0.
And she doesn’t look a day over 39!
🙂
Seriously. She’s even lovelier than the day I met her…almost 21 years ago.
Happy Birthday baby.
I hope you have a wonderful time with your sister. And don’t forget to pick up that nice purse you’ve been wanting.
Â
There. Did I leave ANYTHING out? Now that the WHOLE WORLD knows every detail. I think I can rest comfortably knowing I did my husbandly duty.
Happy Birthday.
Guess who got the first post again!
😀
first post
yeah
Scott… She’s either gonna love ya, or swat yer can fer that one! Kudos on remembering, though ^^
thougtht he’d say i need to grow some
I extend my most heartfelt congratulations and wishes of happiness on this, the day of your wife’s birthday
I can picture Orion in the last frame: *facepalm* Ugh!… Yes, Alexander…
Good thing Alexander doesn’t have Yoda as a mentor.
“too foolish he is. trainable he is Not. finished with him I am.. hhmmmmm?!”
Truly, Alex is the most exasperating of students.
Ruh roh scot you just did the BIGGEST and worse thing you could ever possibly imagine..
All women HATE hearing that turned big 40 mark, you should just erase that post and wish her happy 30’s birthday{ for the next 20 years..
trust me…. i did the same thing,,,, to my wife…
Save yourself scott
Happy birthday to your wife!
(I’m thinkin’ a bit of both, Liam… lovingly swat.)
A tenacious Alexander can… fly? Sweeeeeet.
Well we cant beat that retaya. Now try a first comment with an actual comment 😉
I love the expressions on Alexander on this page
Panel 3: Wait is it?
Panel 4: Crap do I really need to.
Panel 5: Woot i figured it out.
And then the look on Orion’s face 😀
Great job as always!
Based on a suggestion from Tolin42, here’s an alternate to today’s page.

I’m done making mashups for awhile. It’s fun, but too time consuming! Someone else can pick up the ball now.
good choice of words from Alexander Scott
Well, happy birthday.
Yeah, that seemed to be about what Orion’s lesson boiled down to.
It’s time to nut up or shut up, Alex. Wise words from Tallahassee (Zombieland)
Hm so it seems being passionate in certain emotions controls the dream self. Guess Vulcans can’t do much in Dreamland then…poor spock.
Panel 5: “aren’t you proud of me? >puppy eyesloud applause as Alex “gets it”<
…And finally a light bulb flashes above the head of our hero…
…Unfortunately… It’s a Christmas light and happens to be the dimmest light on the tree… 😉
And guess who will not congratulate you. (The rest of us, lady…)
!-)

Well said. I hearby second the motion!
Scott you two are so cute. XD
Happy Natal Day Donna!
And I am having great luv of the last few pages – thanks so much for all your awesome work Scott!
Wrong, she’s 21+19: 21 years old with 19 years of experience.
Happy experience day.
Whew, been awhile since I got on to read comics–now I’m all caught up here! Boy, that was a fun read…Alex is learning to fly! ^,^
no matter how crude and simple, as long as it gets the job done…
hey, but does that mean that all those kids were better at the man up stuff than him? good for him that he won’t pick up on that – would be such a blow to his ego. 😉
and congrats to your wife. 🙂
You know your grit is true when you fly through sheer determination not to fall!
And happy fourth decade-aversery to Donna.
I think it’s more than that. For a kid, it’s “I can fly because I don’t know any better.” There’s no need for them to ‘man up’. For Alex, knowing or not knowing makes no difference. It’s “I don’t care if unassisted human flight is technically impossible, I’m gonna do it anyway because I gotta.”
Happy 40th, Mrs. S!
This whole “I did it I get it scene” is getting old, moving on?
*grins* You rock, my friend… well done.
Happy Birthday! I am also in my “40” this year. I’m still in a little denial until January when I hit 41. Then I’ll say I’m in my “40’s” but unitl then….
I say wish her a happy 29, for the next 8-12 years publicly, and then wishing her a happy 30 for another 8-12 years, and so on. Less chance that she will rip your spine out and beat you with it. That being said…
HAPPY 29 DONNA!!
Now I am going to go pack and run for the hills.
Nice. Much better than my idea. Run.
He did do it, he barely gets it. Orion’s the one who gets it and could probably do it, if he was a human. Alex still needs help getting it.
Iehaaaaaaaa!!!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
HAVE A NICE DAY!!!!!!!!
These posts should be deleted. They don’t contribute to the discussion.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DONNA!
And remember, it’s not forty, it’s thirty-eleven!
Oops! I mean thirty-ten! I have not had my coffee yet this morning!
Happy Birthday Donna!!!!!! That said, if we dont see a page tomarow we will know that she killed you Scott.
I too am 40, but I refuse to act it. lol. I tell my self age is just a number and I am only as old as I fell, Most days I fell pretty young. But I have a sixteen year old who is always more than happy to remind me just how old I really am.
Okay, you may have just blurted out to the whole world that she is “Over the Hill” but just remember that from now on… She’s turning 32. At least that’s what my mom has declared. 😀 Happy birthday. and love the flying arch.
Congratulations! Both my wife and I are older, and I’m not old yet. 🙂
And why should the Wise Man expect Our Hero to get any more complicated than this?
Happy 40th Birthday to Donna 🙂 I don’t know why so many people feel like this is something to be ashamed about. So you’re not a teenager anymore. You should be rejoycing! ^-^ Have a wonderful birthday 🙂 You certainly have a sweetheart for a husband.
Onto the comic commentary. This made me giggle because it reflects the same phrasing that we saw in the comments prior to this page… Orion’s not only calling Alex’s use of it crude, but anyone else who said it too. 2 birds, 1 Orion.
Happy Birthday to her 🙂
Orion: Be happy he even HAS some idea of what’s going on. Its rare that people fly up to a cliff and still keeps his sanity… Well okay, the only rare part is the flying up. Insanity is as common as McDonalds.
Happy Birthday Donna!! From one who has also turned the big “4-0” Truthfully I’m not sure what all the fuss is about. My sister, who’s 44, told me the 40’s are the best years ever, and I’m inclined to agree with her. lol!! We rock!! I hope Scott remembers to bring you to Baltimore con next year… I’d like to thank the great woman behind the artist. 😀
And today’s page made me laugh out loud. 😀 I could almost hear Orion sigh. “Yes, he finally got it.”
Happy Birthday Donna!
“Man up and Do it”… I love that line. 🙂
Great job as always Scott.
I’m curious as to how Alexander will tap into his ability to fly again now that he’s all mellowed out and right back where he started.
Man up …. what a great line!
😉
Oh, and I would like to be a fly on the wall when your wife hears about this….. Ha!!!
But seriously, congrats!
Happy birthday, Donna!
Nancy says, “Happy birthday, Mrs. Sava!” Followed closely by, “Mom, you were 40 once weren’t you?” And yes, Nancy is back among the readership.
Her first comment was to ask if something seems missing between the Friday and the Monday episodes. I must be missing it, too, because I felt it didn’t seem to flow smoothly. Maybe it was too subtle for us. Or maybe it was a result of Alex’s disorientation after being dropped off the cliff.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DONNA!!!!!!!! you are a sweetheart and a great supporter of Scott’s aspirations. Not too mention a fantastic mommy. Milk it for all it’s worth! Brindy sends her well wishes too.
Happy Birthday Donna!!!
Birthday wishes to Donna! … This is a pretty good week, then. 🙂
And as to Alex… Well, he’s Alex. Need I say more?
Guys, does “in crudest sense” means “exactly” or “in some way”? I don’t get it, sorry for my poor english 🙂
Happy Birthday Donna! 😀 Purses are good. Purses are very good.
I’m glad Alex is starting to get the big picture. Let’s just hope Orion can stand him while Alex learns.
I’ve worked with people with actual learning disabilities who got the point quicker than Alex does.
Which brings up a question doesn’t it? Since Alex seems to be reasonably capable when he’s on his own ground, is it possible that he has one?
You go, Retaya!
It means “you got it…but not really”
“Main Entry: 1crude
Pronunciation: \ˈkrüd\
Function: adjective
Inflected Form(s): crud·er; crud·est
Etymology: Middle English, from Latin crudus raw, crude, undigested — more at raw
Date: 14th century
1 : existing in a natural state and unaltered by cooking or processing
2 archaic : unripe, immature
3 : marked by the primitive, gross, or elemental or by uncultivated simplicity or vulgarity
4 : rough or inexpert in plan or execution
5 : lacking a covering, glossing, or concealing element : obvious
6 : tabulated without being broken down into classes
synonyms see rude”
Closer would be “in a very basic sense” or something along those lines.
Nevermind, they explained it much better.
I find it funny that you and Kristle make oppositely minded posts with the same icon.
Uch, once again, I’m the only person who tries to view the image and gets a network timeout. Is there any other place you could save the image?
no you didn’t
you’re not alone, I can’t see it either
If I remember correctly, the vulcans have selfimposed lack of emotions due to the fact that vulcans can’t handle emotions, but I’m not 100% sure…
But on the other hand, IF I remembered correctly, would that be to their advantage or disadvantage?
“…And finally a light bulb flashes above the head of our hero…”
That made me think of this webcomic:
http://www.thebookofbiff.com/2006/10/16/125-idea/
But, Scott, why do something out of husbandly duty when you can do it out of delight? (I know you were just jesting, and I’m jesting back, even if what I say is true 😉 )
In a book I read, a guy put it this way in talking about how he and his wife relate- “She must kiss me, but not that kind of must.” Though it’s right to do those things, and they should be done, we don’t do these things simply because they are right to do- we do them because we love the person so much that we desire and want to do them. It seems the way you are going with thing, that Alex is going to learn this lesson also as we progress through his character development. It is right of Alex to save Dreamland, and he should- yea, it is his responsibility to do so. However, he shouldn’t just do it because it’s right. He should do it because he loves his friends and Nastajia so much that he can’t help but respond rightly to them and their need as a result.
Happy Birthday, Donna!!
I don’t know about that. From what I saw in a news article yesterday, McD’s are more common than insanity- considering the longest drive to a McD’s anywhere in the US is in some nowhere town in SD where you’d have to travel about 1 hour and a half- at least I think that’s what the article said. The guy had a map that was black with lighted pixels for each McD’s location, and let’s just say that east of the Mississippi that except for Maine and up in the Appalachian Mountains, the McDonald locations makes this part of the continent about as bright as the noon day sun. Unless of course, you live in NYC. Then, I suppose you might think insanity to be more common since you’re much closer to it. 😉
i always thought anger led to the dark side…
oh well, controlled anger is powerful…but it is a fine line between anger and madness…
oh yes…
All,
I’m guessing that your ISP has trouble accessing imageshack.
I’ll find a different place to host the 3 mashups I’ve made so far. Look for the location in tomorrow’s comments.
It’s not always about contributing to the discussion.
Yeah. Orion is trying to teach controlling emotions. Alex understood determination. So he got about 25% of what Orion was trying to get across.
Very frustrating for the teacher. I expect he’s going to cut bait and let Alex do it his way, even if it is only a fraction of what Alex could eventually be able to understand.
Yeah. Go figure. Yoda warns about the dangers of anger and not giving into it, but that’s the only way Luke was able to become powerful enough to overcome Darth.
Maybe Luke understood what Yoda was trying to teach. . . . in the crudest sense. 🙂
Happy B’day Donna.
It’s more like Vulcans repress their emotions because at one time they almost destroyed each other due to rampant emotions. They are VERY passionate people, so they force themselves to bury their emotions so they don’t become destroyed by them. Instead, they turn to pure logic for their reasoning.
Also, Vulcans do have telepathic abilities, which can make them uncomfortable around humans who love their emotions. Accidentally touching a human makes them cringe, since they really feel the other person’s emotions when that happens. So don’t try to greet a Vulcan with a handshake or shoulder pat. 😛
They can show off emotions if they want to (and sometimes emotions leak out when they are ruffled), but their society looks down on people who do so openly. Actually, when the friendship between Spock and Kirk became really deep, Spock would amuse Kirk with occasional humor or small emotional queues, but only Kirk would notice because they were so subtle.
I think in the story sense definitions 2, 3 and 4 might apply… Poor Alex 😀
Happy Birthday, and they say 40 is the new 30 sooooo….
Happy 30th Birthday!!
I’ve never had trouble viewing the first two but I don’t seem to be able to see this one.
Happy Birthday Donna!
Happy Birthday, Donna! And trust me, you’re never truly old until you have teenagers. I think that’s what’s aged my mother ;P (hides)
Incidentally, LOVE Alex’s face in the second-to-last panal. And I feel smug about Orion’s exasperated look. Truthfully, I wanted to see Alex smack him on the jaw as he flew up 😛
It’s great how their totally different personalities interact here 🙂
Happy Birthday, Donna! 40 is so young! Been a long time since my wife and I saw that birthday…
Alex, the master of over simplification…
And congratulations, Retaya!
Wow Alex, everything wonderful and amazing Orion just said was then slammed to a halt followed by an awkward silence.
Man up and do it.
Apparently, Alex is a natural at turning anything intricate into pure, simple layman’s.
Wish Donna a very happy 40th birthday Scott.. Humm 40, I cant remember that far back! 🙂
Happy Birthday, Donna! Remember: birthdays are mind over matter: If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter. And having a loving hubby makes up for just about everything else.
I think there’s more to this scene because Alex needs to know how to bring up the ability to fly in a fingersnap, and that requires understanding *how* he is able to fly, even if Alex simlifies what Orion is trying to get across.
Wow, Scott; that was pretty brave, wishing your wife the big unnamed number birthday. I just hope your wife is the type that doesn’t care about age. 😀 In all serious, though, age is nothing more than a number(I’m thirty myself and I neither act nor look it!), so let her know to enjoy life.
As far as the comic; yes, anger can lead to the dark side, but that is only if you let it control you. If you can control it, then you have a very good power on your side. And of course, Alex is the master of boiling things down to the simplest of things.
Technically, I think I remember that in Roman times you were “adulescens”, i.e. teenage, until 42 years old.
So happy birthday Donna and look forward becoming finally adult 🙂
Happy birthday Donna!
It’s your 2nd anniversary of turning 20. 😀
Plesae note that Orion’s last sentence in this version is far to long and complicated for Alex to fathom. 🙂
Yeah Alex! Man Up and Do It! Or as a wise older mentor once said “Do what must be done, do not hesitate, show no mercy.” …hang on, show no mercy…oh, that was Palpatine to the newly named Darh Vader. Maybe “Do what must be done, do not hesitate, show mercy where appropriate”? :p
Happy Birthday Donna!! I will be calibrating my 12th anniversary of my 29th birthday very soon as well. let’s hear it for 1969!!!!
haha! both at the awesome comic and JM’s comment
Scott, I just have to say that I’ve been reading this magnificent story for some time now, and enjoying it immensely. I’m sending a link to my niece and nephew. Their dad will love it!
Happy Birthday to your lovely wife. If she’s anything like mine, YOU got lucky!! BTW, it’s my birthday too. Go 10/21’ers!!
Heh. I recall reading all the “Alex should just man up” type comments people made during the dangle off the cliff strips and now here ALEX goes and says it. LOL
Thanks to All 🙂 Now i got it.
This comic is tedious.
Thank you!
Thanks.
And Happy Birthday!
Just wanted to apologize for not being around. In fact. Donna’s not been either.
Trying to get her to at least see all the happy birthday wishes. But it’s been a whirlwind day.
Thank you all. And she’ll drop in before the end of the day.
You’re welcome.
XD
hHe book of biff w00t!
I like the way Alex phrases things. I think we got him on the right track now, heh.

Congratulations Mrs. Sava!!! I hope you have many more! I like how Alex just “boiled it down.” Now not only him, but everyone will fly, YAY!!! I wonder if Paddington will still be able to though …
Hi All! I’m sorry I haven’t been up here sooner…my sister and her family are here visiting us for my birthday so I’ve been a little busy with them (did I mention they have a 3 year old and 9 month old?)! I want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of your wonderful thoughts, wishes and sentiments…it is SUPER SWEET and I thank you all for sending me love…I can feel it across the miles you know!
I am not the least bit upset about turning 40 (30 for me was fatal…LOL…but I am looking forward to my 40s…I hear they are the best years!) Even in this crazy economy we live in…I have a wonderful husband, two amazing boys and family and friends who love me…I am truly blessed! These first 40 years have been an amazing ride…partly thanks to my crazy artist husband…and I’m excited to see what the next 40 have in store!
Thanks again for all of your wishes…I feel so blessed to “know” all of you!
Love,
Donna (a.k.a. The Wife)
P.S. I LOVE that Alex had to be thrown off the cliff to make him remember how to fly…can’t that be said of some of us too?!
I just love how completely unimpressed Orion looks in the last panel.
ah i see now then happy 40th birthday dona and hope there all wonderful!
Same here, the previous two worked but not this one
Maybe just think of it as a metaphor?
*emails Scott to keep Donna away from cliffs for awhile*
Hope you had a Happy Birthday, Scott’s wife. We’re getting ready for sister 2 (out of 6 “kids”) to celebrate her 40th. This is a pretty great age range to be in. Precious little ones, growing quickly to adulthood, parents still young enough to enjoy them, and life goes on and on.
Alex: “So I need to man up and grow a pair?”
Orion: “In the crudest sense. In a more refined sense, you need to enlarge the pair you already have. And soon they will be as big as mine!”
Alex: “Ungh…that’s going to make walking kinda difficult.”
“Man up” is there ANYTHING that phrase CAN’T help a man do?
I dunno…seems to me like Alex is yanking Orion’s tail-feathers just a bit.
yes crude
ALEXANDER CARTER EARNED THE POWER OF UNDERSTANDING!
+1 Guts, +3 Heart, and +2 Balls
Dreamland logo tshirt unlocked!
All the posts about expressions being priceless and people ROFLing at base slapstick, not to mention every character being “favorite” or “best”, should then also be deleted… as they’re far worse than mere “First” posts.
DETERMINATION!!!
