HappyMonday!
I will be at GMX this weekend with my good buddy Marv Wolfman (Creator of Blade, The Teen Titans, and a ton of other things!)
Come on by and hang out with us (and buy some stuff too, if you’d be so kind)!
Oh, this is FAB! The brothers are being forced into each other’s position. They are both going to need to grow up fast. I CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS!!
Dan’s worst nightmare: having to wing it
Sounds like Dan is too reluctant to go to Dreamland.
Let’s hope that Dan doesn’t fall for Nastajia, otherwise Nicole will give him what for..!
Oh yes, Nicole, that will help him relax so he can fall asleep easily. (eye roll)
Dan has a valid point. He’s suddenly being thrown into a new role, and in a critical, high pressure situation: To be King, in the middle of an invasion of Dreamland by the NR. Nastajia is missing and in danger. Nic is alive and screwing things up. Almost nobody in Dreamland knows who he is, although everybody knows Alex and regards him as King. This is a HECK of a lot for a guy who is a thinker and not an Action Hero to have to deal with. Nicole’s faith that he can handle all this if he just leaps in and does it is heart warming, but MAYBE taking a while to think this through, figure out priorities, and decide whether or not to stab Nic through the heart on sight would be a good thing.
I think you hit the nail on the head with this comment. Alex has done a lot of growing up lately because of his involvement with Nastajia and the complicated matter of who should be on the throne of Dreamland…but Dan has had the (relative) luxury of sitting on the sidelines. He’s believed that this was all real…and then after meeting Niviene he knew that this was all real…but he still got to live it all at a kind of remove. Now he’s going to have to face up to the reality of responsibility…he’ll have to learn how to act without necessarily getting days or even hours of planning…just as Alex will have to learn how to think much more strategically to figure out how he can possibly aid the woman he loves. 🙂
This is getting good!!
Of course Dan has a valid point…but sometimes there isn’t time for research and study prior to the moment when action is required. I kind of think he’s relied on Alex to be able to act spontaneously when plans aren’t possible or have failed in the past, but he needs to learn how to act without carefully wrought plans. He needs to learn it’s possible to act thoughtfully without taking days to get to the point where he’s “ready.” Oftentimes, leaders aren’t given the opportunity to “get ready.” They simply have to do the best with what they have at that moment.
I’m glad Nicole is pushing Dan like this. Dan needs to grow as a character. I love him to death for being the sweet nerdy guy he is, but he needs to learn how to grow beyond that comfort zone he’s been living in. 🙂
I think Julie’s analyses are insightful, and with all the dire straits everybody seems to be in this promises to be a heck of a ride to whatever conclusion Scott’s cooked up. Talk about a page turner! =)
Dan has no familiarity with the geography of either Dreamland or the Nightmare Realm. Thus Nicodemus would use it to his advantage. Dan would probably cower at the sight of the dragon who in turn would ensure his reign as true king is short and sweet!
Actually, from Alex’s descriptions. Dan is very familiar with the geography of Dreamland–he couldn’t have made the battle plans he has without knowing it. I’m curious to see what special powers the king of Dreamland has.
Well depending on what he’s reading that’s the perfect surefire way to fall asleep. Get a few scientific journal articles in front of his nose and he’ll be nodding off in no time.
And for clarity I’m saying this as an uber engineering major science nerd. Scientific journal articles, even if it’s something you’re interested in, are dry and dull.
Get your butt to Mars.
When Dan goes to dreamland for the first time where will he be? If its the last place the sword was, then he will be face to face with the Dragon. I would be reluctant to go to if that were the case
LOL!!!
Will Scott reboot the entire series, now that Dan has the necklace. I mean redo the very first page(page 1 chapter 1)have Alex fade away and young Dan replace him?!?
Or is that too much work?
Well, it’s technically Nicole’s fault since she forced Dan to go ( if he goes).
We all know that if Dan weren’t already falling for Nicole that he and Kiwi would get together.
The past is the past, m’dear. You can’t change it.

– “No ‘what if’s. Who do you think you are? The Watcher from Marvel Comics?”
– “My favourite character… *sigh* so objective and aloof…”

I sense an argument will be coming on…
Dan:I can’t just go to Dreamland without ANY sort of plan,I can’t go flying half cocked or something. What if the Nightmare beasts overwhelm me?
What would Nicole counter with?
Nicole’s right. Dan is probably going to be better at navigating Dreamland than Alex (who frequently got lost and required a native to help him get to where he was supposed to be). Neither Dan nor Alex really has a true knowledge of the Nightmare Realm’s geography, so Dan isn’t at any greater disadvantage than his brother there.
As for your concern that Dan would cower in fear at the sight of Nicodemus? I don’t think he would. I think he’d be afraid (what intelligent person wouldn’t be afraid of a dragon?), but he is very well aware of who and what Nicodemus is…and probably has gathered from what his brother said that the dragon would prefer to work with him instead of roasting him alive right now (you know…that whole “let’s unite forces to defeat the Nightmare Realm” thing)…so I don’t think Dan would be that vulnerable to Nic at this point.
IMO, the real question is whether or not Dan could rally the Dreamlanders to fight as a united group without Nastajia’s help since he’s an “unknown” who hasn’t been trained to motivate and lead like she has (I’m not even bothering to compare him to Alex at this point because Alex didn’t really rally the forces of Dreamland last time by the power of his own skills). It probably would be even harder for him to get the Dreamlanders to fight on his side if he creates a treaty with Nic for the duration of the fight given how they all feel about The Usurper. About the only thing he’d have going for him is their desire to protect their home from invasion. 🙁 This is probably going to be tough for Dan!
There wouldn’t be any point to doing that IMO. It’s not like giving Dan the necklace now changes the fact that Alex wore it from the start.
Easy…”But you already know that humans have powers in Dreamland that would help you fight a horde. Your brother fought a horde of Nightmare beasts just fine.” 🙂 Whether or not Dan knows that he’d have stronger and better powers than Alex did since he’s the “true king” is irrelevant. He already knows that humans can fly and lift impossible weights…and he’d be carrying the Sword of Kings which can slice through rock like butter…that excuse wouldn’t hold much water. 🙂
– “No ifs, no buts, you’ve got the sword that cuts!” >:=)>
Julie,I’m glad I didn’t say, “Upon seeing Nicodemus,Dan wets his pants!” Is that NOT a comforting image?
