Page 708…
Some days I feel like I’m not doing enough to connect with you all.
But I guess with the emails, Twitter, the Forum, this blog, and going to conventions…I’m not doing NOTHING…right?
I can’t believe it’s been 2 and a half years already. I still feel like I’m the “new guy” in webcomics. Like I’m still trying to prove myself here.
But things are going so well. YOu guys are so wonderful. I just hope you’re all enjoying the story…and please always feel like you can suggest things for more involvment.
I wish this could be more interactive somehow. But we’ll do the best we can.
I just keep putting my head down and working so hard…I guess sometimes I feel like I’m neglecting family, friends, and all of you readers.
Hopefully that’s not the case. But any thoughts on what MORE you’d like to see of me, the process, dreamland, etc….please chime in.
As Frasier Crane said…
‘I’m listening…”
I think it’s great that you listen to your readers. I don’t think that you have any obligation to answer back and the fact that you do is awesome!
I love this webcomic, as I’ve been following it for a year. I also LOVE your reference to Frasier!
Sounds to me like you’re fishing for a compliment. 😉
Personally I’d just like to see some length images of each of the characters to make wallpapers out of (Angry Paddington particularily!).
You’re already doing a lot more than some, so I’d say keep up the good work. You’re one of the shining gems in the world of plain rocks.
Hi, I’ve been reading for awhile but never really said anything. Anyway, I know a little thing you can do, get a Cbox. A.K.A. a chat box. Just go to cbox.ws and sign up and get a free chat box. Its nice for just chatting with people.
Well, since you asked…just off the top of my head, these are two things I’m curious about and eager to see addressed (or re-addressed) at some point:
1) how the different approaches of Daniel and Nicole help (or don’t help) Alexander and the gang
2) Daniel’s inability to visit Dreamland (is it accurate to say that he never dreams _at all_? because the brain needs to dream…humans that don’t dream, go insane); I find it very interesting and ominous that he seems to have been deliberately “shut out” from Dreamland at an early age.
let’s see… a dreamland mmo would be interactive =D
I’d honestly really love to see “in progress” sketches, work, concept art, renders, skins, storyboards and whatever else you do to prepare a comic.
A very sharp shadow over the right eye in panel four creates an illusion of a two-toned eyebrow. It’s very awkward.
Anyway, I still love your work. Also, your Princess Bride referencing convinced me to make my mother watch that movie. She liked it, which is funny, because she rarely enjoys the same humor I do.
Nah you’re not neglecting anyone Scott, you just worry too much! (A lot like Frasier Crane himself actually!) 😛
Third panel rocks by the way, nicely done. But how stupid is this guy!?!?!? (Dwarf King).
I mean, hellllllllllooooooooo, EXPLAIN!?!? Oh right, you mean explain what we’ve already told you several times already!?!?! If I was Nastajia I’d probably say something like “Okay, you’re stupid. The End.”
Also have to mention Alex’s expression in the first panel too. “Well now would ja jus LOOK at that!” Classic stuff Scott. 🙂
Hiya!
Please, don’t worry. You ARE doing enough, really. You’ve got so much to do and you still find the time to answer emails from fans – it’s amazing, really.
I just wish I could make it to Comic Con and tell you in person…
Well, I’m off now. Time to click on some ads. 😉
Having just discovered the webcomic yesterday, and read all the way to current… the only thing you need is more exposure, and perhaps a PDF or print collection.
I’m hanging on, waiting for more.
you’re awesome and very open with us, your readers. i agree that you *were* the new guy longer than say, other new webcomics, and part of that was you just showing up on the scene with a professional *disney-feel* comic in a community of indie artists. maybe you ruffled some feathers – just from jealousy of the high quality of your work – within the webcomics community – however they justify not promoting your comic. but i think people are warming up to you bc you’re such a nice, genuine and approachable person. and as far as your countless readers go, i think we loved your comic from the get-go but have come to be fond of you and your family as well. in short, you rock!
Been here a long time and I love how involved you are with the community. (But I hope not so much that you neglect your immediate circle of loved ones). It’s also nice having somewhat of a daily commentary on behind the scenes stuff for the daily comic.
As for fishing for comments, from my experience of many different webcomics you are probably the most connected and responsive to your fans of any of them. I’ve appreciated many of your direct responses in the forum to my and other fans questions along with this blog.
Thanks, I’m amazed at the many facets of yourself you share with us and do hope we don’t leach away your spirit to exhaustion.
At the moment the only suggestion I have for added interactivity might be the occasional vlog or even a live video stream of you creating the comic like Scott Kurtz at PvP did.
I agree with Rachel. People not being able to dream is just not possible. REM sleep is an integral part of the sleep cycle. Like Rachel, I also remember to have read something about people going insane if they can’t get to REM sleep (though I don’t know much about the scientific basis this claim is based on, so I treat it with care…).
I have my own theories about Daniel not being able to go to Dreamland, but don’t feel like sharing them yet. 😛 Maybe later. What I have been wondering about though: what would happen if Daniel put on the sword necklace when I goes to sleep (or if him and Alex put it on together – if the chain is long enough, that is). It’s worth a try…
And: don’t worry too much about not doing enough for us readers. I’m already astounded that you are able to reply to some comments personally! And you do so much more besides! Honestly, as you can see from the comments you get on this post, your “public relations” work is great.
Ha! About TIME the dwarf king makes an effort! =D
I think you’re doing fine–you’re certainly doing quite a lot! I haven’t been disappointed yet…and from the way you’re going, I don’t think I ever will be. ^///^
Hearing…er, reading your plea, I cannot help but respond. Honestly, you’re doing a good job. As far as webcomics go, you’ve got a good start. By now, a webcomic has committed one of the deadly sins of creativity, such as self-insertion. Or breaking the fourth wall (actually, it’s not a sin, since some people can pull it off…). If there is a reason as to why you still feel like the new guy, it could because you might feel you haven’t done enough yet, which is something that takes time. So don’t worry too much right now. Just keep moving forward like you’ve always done thus far.
Oh, and just for sake of itself, two and a half years is actually pretty young for a webcomic.
If you keep putting out 5 pages a week then you’re doing everything you need to to connect to your audience and everything else, forums, twitter, etc., is just gravy. Keep up the good work.
I agree with Vorshek, this is, in my limited experience of webcomic reading one of the few good webcomics with a continuous plot, plus it has the added bonus of coming out with a new page pretty much daily.
Whooo! one word answer dwarf king!
BTW, scott, your doing a great job
You know, I’ve been thinking about this whole “no dream = go crazy” thing, and as much as that may be the case I think more pressing would be the whole “no brain function = not live” thing.
You are doing plenty! I feel like we can hear your thoughts on the comic, and give you feedback through these comments (most creators don’t have these, and if they do, they don’t respond) so thank you! I hope you’re not neglecting your home responsibilities. Thanks for creating such a sweet webcomic. 🙂
Thank you all so much.
I was TOTALLY not fishing for compliments…ha ha.
I simply felt I could do more. And I knew you all would be there to help me find out what it was.
But thank you so much for the kind words, suggestions, and emails. What a wonderful way to wake up.
🙂
I do like the idea of a chat box. And I guess I really need to add a page with info on the WOwio books, some behind the scenes or making of, maybe a FAQ?
Anyways. Please keep up the suggestions. THis all REALLY helps.
And thank you again for the encouragement.
you are you realy are this is the first time that i have put anything so i just hope like all the readers that all your travels are safe (well thanks for listening)
p.s. your comic is wonderful. thank you.
Honestly, I have been glued to this comic since I discovered a couple of years ago… been with it near the begging. I’m quite is all.
As for what I would like to see, more people with dream powers. Dream abilities have facinated me since I was a kid, watching Nightmare on Elmstreet. In my dreams, I can fly, even as an adult, ..(yeah, I’m an adult that dreams about being a superhero.) So you can understand my love for you comic.
Forrinn
Scott,
Short of coming to Long Island and hanging out for a BBQ I am not sure how much more you can do. 🙂
Honestly, just answering posts here and e-mails and everything you have been doing is plenty. Would a chat box, FAQ, and other things be nice? Sure, I would never say no to knowing more about Dreamland, but it isn’t required. I think you are doing an awesome job of not only being interactive with us, but of creating an entertaining and exciting world and story.
The other webcomics I read basically do the same that you do. Post in the blog, go to conventions, share stories about their families/life. Two of them actually host annual events. Penny Arcade has PAX and Ctrl-Alt-Del has Digital Overlord but their audiences are much different than yours. For some reason I don’t see a Dreamland LAN party being a big hit. 😉
Just keep up with what you are doing and make sure you spend time with the family and friends first. Then you can worry about us.
The contrast in hand sizes reminds me of the scene in “Shrek” where he and Fiona first hold hands.
I think that for every successful webcomic, there’s ten or twenty that didn’t make it. I think you’re making all the right moves Scott, but interactivity will always be a problem when you’re working in a career with a large amount of solo performance.
SO lets see – FORUM? CHECK! Comments? CHECK!
I just wish I could make it to the comic con…better yet a dang comic store 🙁 but I’m stuck in Texas.
I think you’re doing great as you are, Scott 🙂
Pretty much every way you can reasonably talk to your readers you’re doing. And you’re always nice to us.
I can’t see what else we could want, honestly.
I really just want to read the comic. Other than spending money on your stuff, I don’t know what else you expect from me.
Go outside, bring cookies to your neighbors, and live in the real world for a while. We are your consumers, not your friends.
Okay, Jewliet…lay off a bit, eh? No reason to bite the guy’s head off.
Scott, you’re phenomenal. So long as you’re not neglecting your family, I don’t think you should worry so much about this. You do so much more than most creators already…those of us who’ve been following you since you began this journey will remain simply because your story is engaging, your characters colorful, and your interaction real and human. Just keep it up, man. We’re here for the long haul!
Again thanks….
And Xandyr…I didn’t take Jewliet’s comments as harsh. I think she’s just trying to say….get out and get up from the computer.
Which is what my wife keeps telling me too.
🙂
Thank you all.
I’m not much of one for posting, but I figured I’d add my support. You’re doing a great job, my wife and I love the comic. 🙂 Just ensure you are spending enough time with your family.
Hey,
New-ish reader, never posted before, but in response to the above…
you rock.
I don’t think you need to do anything extra, but if you really want to, I’m with Rob. Some ‘in-progress’ stuff would be very cool to see!
Regardless, keep up the great work. :3
In the end, we love the comic and that’s what matters most, isn’t it? If he didn’t want us to be happy that we are here reading this comic and enjoying it, he would never have put it up. And he enjoys writing and creating this world for us. It’s great that he wants to know us as people, rather than just someone to vote for his comic and buy his stuff.
I’m enjoying the story alot, but I do have input. It’s not a bad thing, but it’s something that’s been niggling at me since I started reading.
I would like it if, with every update, we moved forward a bit. I appreciate that you’re trying to make it “cinematic” or something, but for comics it’s rough since you can only update one at a time. It seems like with some updates, we get a one-panel comic, or a 5-panel action sequence(some of these are 3 or 4 in a row even). It seems to me that these aren’t necessary to the story at all.. They could be shortened or omitted entirely, and we could move on with the story(okay, I’m impatient) faster.
Then again, I’m obsessed with proofreading and editing and such, so there you go. 🙂 Don’t get me wrong though! Loooooove the comic! Love! You make alot of people happy with this comic, that alone is enough. And yet, you go the extra mile to connect with your fans.. That’s not something I come across every day. Keep up the excellent work!
You update everyday, you talk to us, you respond to us, and you want to do more? Wow. You are the most amazing person I know of. However, I do think you should take your wife’s suggestion and “get out and get up from the computer.” I honestly think you do TOO much for us. We’re spoiled! I have a list of webcomics I visit every day- I always come to this one first. It has to be my favorite out of all I’ve read. Keep up the great work, but remember to take breaks and not to let us take away time from your loved ones. :3
Speaking just for myself, I would rather see you maintain the quality of the art and story than have those suffer because you’re spending too much time trying to communicate with your audience. Audience participation is all very well and good (and is one of the things that these new media can help greatly with) but it’s not the main thing.
You’re an artist, and artists are expected to be eccentric and aloof. The world needs more loofs! 🙂
I’m not saying you should stop trying to connect with your audience–that’s a good thing–but please don’t stress about it.
Scott your sanity is important as well, while I’m sure all of us appreciate the effort you put into the comic, Sometimes you need to step back and reevaluate things. If it means going M-W-F on updates that’s fine with me. Just don’t burn yourself out man.
If it hasn’t been mentioned already, if you want to have your readers more involved with the comic itself, why not make a contest every once in a while, to have your readers design a character for themselves and place that in your comic, or even send a picture of themselves for you to put into a 3-D figure? Just merely thoughts for chewing on. Great comic, and hope it continues to be a success.
God Bless!
~Maverick
I have followed this for at least a year and I am quite taken with your story.
Personally, I kind of wish you’d go through stuff like fight scenes a bit faster… as much as I love watching the Fabulous Five beat the stuffin’s out of the baddies, sometimes it seems as if the fight panels are endless and I just wanna get back to the plot. But don’t worry… At least the animation is gorgeous, it’s not like it’s boring… it just seems like there’s too much eye-candy and not enough meat. But that could me just me, and if you keep piling up the eye-candy, I’ll still gobble it up! Good job and good luck!
I TOTALL LOVE THIS COMMENT!! ITS SO COOL AND IT ALSO KEEPS YOU INTERESTED INSTEAD OF BORING YOU AND MAKING YOU SLEEPY LIKE THOSE OTHER COMICS, WHEN I FIRST STARTED READING IT I GOT HOOKED AND I’VE NEVER STOP READING IT TIL THIS DAY!!
so many comments
…..why did he say explain?
and explain what?
😀
I’d like to see more of the process behind making the comic. I believe it was supposed to be a series. 😀
Is it just me, or is Bognok developing a habit of using as few words as possible?
Oh, Bognok will get his speech in. Dwarves always have to have a speech at some point.
As for the comic in general….
LOVE IT!!
I’ve always been a Sci-Fi buff – I’m half considering an essay comparing and contrasting Teal’c and Bognok 😛 – but In the wake of D&D 4.0, I’ve become much more interested in fantasy. Of course, I was already but now more so. I came across your comic, and read through the whole thing in two days. I’ve been reading it faithfully ever since. I two have a list of webcomics that I rutinely visit, but unlike Chel, I save the best for last ^_^
Contests and behind-the-scene stuff are cool. I’d deffinately be interested in that. But seriously, you’re amazing as it is. Go for a walk in the woods with your wife. And when she asks you what you’re thinking, don’t tell her “I was just wondering how it would go in Dreamland if….” 😛
I told you to go.
Why are you still reading?
lol, keep up the great work.
I think this would make for an excellent animated movie. And if this is all done from screen shots in a 3d program as I suspect it is, it probably wouldnt be much of a stretch to throw some riggers and animators at your models. Though I hear the actual rendering process can be quite time consuming. I know a guy who animates for Nickelodeon. Not sure what he could do for you, but I’ll have him check out your comic anyways. I’m sure he’ll enjoy it.
*facepalm* Didn’t she try a few pages back? Geez. I didn’t realize dwarves were THIS slow. >.<
haha.. He’s supremely stubborn, Emily… I think it’s in the Dwarven nature to be so.
Oh, no apology then…
He’s made a lot of progress: at least now he’s listening to her.
What are all the formulas for all the different emoticons that can be used on here? Anyone know?
OMG flashback! “lucy, you got some ‘splainin to do!” rotflmao
Bognok: “Explain.”
Nastajia: “Well when an elf king and a dragon hate each other very much…”
that is so like a dwarf. awesome.
@Scott – I would respectfully argue counter to the folks who want things to move faster. I follow a number of webcomics when I have time, and probably about half only update once a week – with which I am fine. Anything above 3x/week is quite a lot, in my opinion, and updating at that rate entitles you to a little eye candy and more time spent on certain scenes. DC is one of only three that I follow that updates 5+x/week, so I think you keep things moving along nicely.
Keep up the great work, and I wish you continued success!
Who are you and why do you keep jumping on the story?!? For god’s sake man just sit back and enjoy the comic. Damn pushy interwebz trolls…
As much as Scott deserves the praise, it’s a bit of a shame the comments section is mostly non related to the comic now. Inconceivable!
Also agree with Octo (and everyone else with similar posts that I just skipped through).
And as always I wonder how much these comments will be read being >2 years over date 😛
Rofl…
They look so shocked at how the dwarves can regulate.
Dwarf King: Explain. Now.
Staj:Well you see, what had happened was….This dope here, Alexander, wandered into a tomb about 8 years ago and took the Sword of Kings and cut Nic before he disappeared for 8 years. He came back recently and Nic has been chasing us since we went to talk to Nic about getting this shiny amulet back, and he recognized Alex. Now he’s been chasing us for a while and we were flying a pirate ship we just… commandeered when Nic decided to drop in with his ‘Goyles and we ended up crashing into this mountain. We survived, wandered into here, and you found us. I’m sure you know they rest.
Wonder if the king is related to Pauline Hanson…
Sorry, bad Aussie joke 🙂
Texas? I’m so sorry…
King: “Explain”
Nastajia: “She did it!” *points at Felicity*
Maybe my sarcasm-detector is on the blink… but I hope that comment was facetious.
“You have two minutes. Please begin.”
I know, right? Sometimes, I go to a website, and no one has answered any questions whatsoever. But sometimes, I see the readers wished for a certain thing to happen, and that’s really cool!
