New Figures in the works…
Hey all…
So glad you all liked yesterday’s page. I really am happy and grateful for all of your support and encouragement.
Thanks.
I’m going to get some more figures done to compliment Kiwi and Nastajia.
I’m pretty much decided that this will be the pose for Felicity…
But I’m still torn about what to do with Alexander.
Do I go heroic? Goofy? Action?
Any thoughts?
Or if there’s a particular scene or pose you have in mind. Please do shout out.
I’m totally open on this at this point.
Thanks
Scott
The third one–the one where he’s standing with both hands on the sword. That, by far, is the best, hands down.
By the way, Once I saw Paddington, Kiwi, and Felicity looking at the “new couple” my first worry was that Felicity would be all sad or something that she didn’t get Alex…so the “I’m gonna puke” line made me laugh and sigh with relief!
Fliss looks perfect. For Alex… Well, I’d say his standard state is ‘bewildered’ honestly 😀 A statuette of him scratching his head and looking bemused would be right in character 😀
I don’t buy statuettes myself, but judging from the response to yesterday’s page you might want to consider an ‘Alex & Nastajia kissing’ statuette, too…
The pose for Felicity is PERFECT! I look forward to they day that a figurine is available. As far as a pose for Alexander, I have to go with the third pose. It is definitely the best by a wide margin.
In response to today’s page, I will say that Felicity’s reaction to the situation surprised me a bit. I expected her to feel differently. I still feel sorry for her though. She never had a chance.
It’s good to see that Nastajia is finally loosening up and getting close to Alex before he disappears again.
Pity about Fliss though… She never really had a decient chance, but she was a cool character.. Does she find someone else?
I’d have to say that the first and third pics of alex look a bit posed… like, not a proper action shot and just a bit *too* posed… Alex isn’t the kinda character that looks in control or comfortable with is surroundings. I’d say I’m all for the middle one.
Maybe he could be leaning with his elbow or forearm on the sword’s hilt, if it’s high enough. Shrugging his other shoulder. Or just looking cool and debonair. Or something.
Wonderful work, thank you!
I think you should do a figurine in the boxers with yellow smiley faces on them. 😀
I have to say the second pic is the one that most looks like Alex. He has no idea what he’s doing, but he’s game for whatever. I think his expression should be more of wonderment than bewilderment, though.
A pose were Alex was leaning in a debonair fashion on his sword, slipped and knocked his chin on it seems totally in character. Though he does seem to be getting more control of himself.
Are these the small ones or whatever happened to the big ones were Nastajia and Alexander can hold hands?
I like the pose for Felicity . Maybe you could make two Alex statuettes one in dreamland(I liked the middle one) & one out of dreamland with his sword arond his neck
I like the pose where his sword is leaning on his shoulder. It seems a little more natural than the others.
The best Alex figure is the third, with sword pointed to the ground.
I’m happy Felicity didn’t get angry or sad with Alex and Nastajia kiss.
The third one makes me think someone has been to Scarlet Monastery.
Anyway, I’d go download WoW Model viewer and look at some of the en garde type poses for the different character models there. Might generate some nifty ideas. Plus you can get to see what your character would look like in pretty much any armor or weapon model in the game.
I’m either for the action or heroic, leaning more toward the heroic. Definately not the goofy. All guys are goofy, there’s no reason to immortalize it in plastic.
Plus, everybody else gets a cool pose, you want your hero to be sitting int the line up with a screwball face?
“All guys are goofy, there’s no reason to immortalize it in plastic. ”
LOL!
Sarah wins!
🙂
I’d agree about leaning toward the heroic in expression. As far as the pose is concerned, from a design standpoint, I prefer the one with the sword point down, but I think it looks a bit awkward with him leaning on it with both hands.
I would suggest modifying the third pose a bit — why not have him leaning on the sword with the point down and then have his other arm akimbo (in a fist on his hip and flexing slightly). Add a slight lift to his shoulders and you have a pretty strong pose.
the third one, for sure.
I’m going to agree with almost everybody here; the third pose is the best. He looks really heroic and noble while still retaining his carefree Alex demeanor. Good work with Fliss; she looks good!
None of them look quite right. The third one is the best though.
Well Scott,
Farbeit for me to give you ANY advice whatsoever with anything you’re doing. As a consumer tho, who has a pinpoint of talent, I’d like to give you an idea for a design for Alex in Dreamland.
We know he’s still not fully ‘with it’ in Dreamland, but he’s getting his footing back and hey, he finally kissed his dream girl (no pun intended)… So… we have him in armour already and his trusty sword.
Picture this if you will
He’s surrounded. His friends are in peril and it’s up to Alex to defeat the evil doer in posession of his friends. The only thing he can resort to after hours of battle, is his wits and the last bit of strength he has, his passion for his friends, and Nastajia is the adrenaline that keeps him going. He doesn’t want to lose them a second time.
He’s poised with both hands on the sword. A group of bad guys surround him, (mind you, we don’t see the bad guys, we just see Alex as it’s a statuette) His legs bent slightly, his back is arched with his shoulders in front of him, muscles (altho we don’t see them) tensed byond compare, suddenly a strike is made from behind. His focus is adverted to the sounds from behind, as he’s about to look back, he moves his legs shoulder width apart… his sword is slightly off to his right side, as tho he’s about to swing and block whatever may come.
The look on his face is no longer focus and determination, it’s a little bit of curiosity and hope…
His head is slightly turned so his peripheral vision is better used to see what’s coming from behind. I have a little over 180 degree peripheral vision, so, if you take that type of feel, he doesn’t have to turn his head much at all, and his eyes can just move in the direction he hears the sound.
That’s my idea anyways.
For Felicity… I like what you have. If you wanted to do a little more, with the idea that is… you could have her look like she’s stealing a gem like she did last year when she was first introduced. I am sure that’s not the idea you want to portray tho… so maybe it’s not the best idea, cool pose idea tho lol.
Well that’s enough from me. Sorry it took so long to describe. I wanted to give you as much as possible from my mind. (Yes I can spare it)
See ya on the boards
Jon
Wait a minute, gang — how do we know that Felicity isn’t angry or hurt? She might just be burying her true feelings under that “think I’m gonna puke!” line. (Then again, maybe not. But don’t breathe a sigh of relief yet until we’ve had the chance to see a few more pages!)
I for one would have loved the Alex that interconnects with the Nastajia one, the model you had a while back (two halfcircle bases). But that won’t fit with the current Nas, I figure(ine 😀 ).
I don’t think the 3rd pose is all that perfect though. It looks a little “closed” to me. I prefer the open stances of the first two, especially the 2nd one, but I guess Sarah has a point about the goofiness needing not to be immobilized.
What’s up with people liking Alex and Felicity? I dunno, but Felicity’s personality and aura gives me a really young feel. So them getting together would be… *shudder*
Haha, I am still a little shocked about the kiss… totally didn’t see that coming.
I’d go for the 3rd one’s stance with 1st one’s smirk.
I envision that as the stance someone who’d just found a sword and some armour would think that they’re -supposed- to take for a picture/statue. Basically he would be trying to look noble, but realizes that he looks a little silly.
That’s the impression I have of his character as it stands.
i think you should go with your last one http://dreamlandchronicles.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/alexstatue_03.jpg
<—that one image #3 because it looks more like it could go in a “set or collection” of figures and/or a stand alone piece.
but thats just my thoughts.
~ME.
It would also be nice if you could make the head removable to place a fully helmed head on the figure. It would make for a very striking knight in armor look.
I rather like statue pose #3, but I do like the image of Alex in the Chapter Four title page, with one hand on his hip, suggesting a jaunty swagger, a raised eyebrow and a playful grin on his face. It reflects his nature outside Dreamland. Perhaps we’ll see a more mature Alex emerge over time, as the story progresses, but for now, that’s how I see him.
I love the first pose of Alexander … the action one!
The Felicity one is perfect!
If we are stuck to the three, then #1, but I’d prefer the one on page 513 or one of the following ones (pirate fight).
Take that with a grain of salt though, I’m a bit old for action figures and my son isn’t reading yet, although he is trying. I do plan on hooking him up with Dreamland (and some of your other works) to start with ….
As long as we are talking, I like panel 3 of page 550 for Nastajia.
loved the second pose
“Farbeit” sounds like some sort of French pastry.
I prefer the first, actually – though the second might be better if he had his sword held somewhat more confidently further up his shoulder, with a more relaxed stance. The third one just looks closed off to me – maybe it’s just the angle, though.
I think Felicity looks fine, but I’m not keen on any of the three Alex poses – the last looks a little too much like Alex is about to dig himself a hole.
Going way back to when Alex first got the armor, the top panel on page 206 looks more like what I’d like to see; the pose, the expression, the tentative nature of the implied motion is a bit more evocative of Alex. Although I can’t see his feet in the picture, I can envision him as half trying to step forward, half ready to retreat. (Kind of where he is between worlds.) Just add the sword on his back, and I think it’d be perfect.

Why not Alex pointing his sword somewhere or with the confident smile he always has, sword over the shoulder while held, kind of barbarian like?
Ack… if only I could draw. ;_;
Hmmmmmm..
After reading your strip for a while and getting the feel for your characters…
I’d say have Alex standing with grin on his face, head down slightly but eyes looking up, one hand rubbing the back of his head and the other one resting on his sword like Figure #3 has. Maybe gripping the handle with the sword tip on the ground leaning slightly to one direction.
