I like the idea. I didn’t think the email account thing was a big deal; it keeps people from signing up for ten free email accounts and giving themselves free ipods. I just used my school email account. Most people have school or internet provider addresses they should be able to use, i.e. comcast. When I signed up, they also said you could use a credit card for verification, or send a picture of an ID or something along those lines. I understand their concern, if their ipod offer is legitimate. If you continue to update on wowio I will continue to d/l the e-books. I will eventually buy the book in print anyway, its worth buying once I get a regular income and I plan to buy a signed copy from your personal stash aka your store instead of Amazon. But its nice to have the ebook to flip thru in case the servers ever get crashed by new fans hehe.
They allow credit card numbers and scans of government or college IDs for authentification. (Does this work with free email accounts? It wouldn’t make sense if it didn’t. Sorry – I haven’t tried yet) Lots of people have siblings and parents who can register for them with the information. Continue it for now. Eventually, you could find another place to do this for the people without access to Wowio. Or, maybe, Wowio could figure out a way to allow those free email accounts to access only Dreamland content.
Also, don’t stress about it. Its great of you to be working on it and trying to make it work for us fans, not to mention the income stream for you, but don’t stress over it. 😉
Keep doing this. I d/led my copy and I will d/l the next one too. I just used my isp’s email and that worked. I don’t see why they wouldn’t accept a web based email address if you verify it with a CC or driver’s license.
Keep up the great work!
It is a great idea! Just keep doing it, for the people who can log on! I just hope they will allow non-US residents soon… I’ve never heard of Wowio before, but I think it’s really cool!
Yeah, an ID or credit card works. That’s what I did. As for the international thing, I don’t know. I say keep doing it =D
Why not offer the PDF on the website somewhere? Like everytime you make an update, put it on the website as a download? Or bypass WOWIO all together and just make a PDF and have it available for download on the site. I signed up for WOWIO either way. Keep up the good work!
I agree – keep doing it! Mostly everyone should have an e-mail address from their isp (even if they don’t use it regularly, like me) or can provide their ID. I understand why Wowio has that policy since everything is advertisement driven to give free content to the users. If the advertisers want to be sure the people utilizing the content are people who can actually use and puchase their products, then that is their prerogative. For those of us who can use it, it’s a great feature and I for one will continue to download the eBook every week.
Being a Web Developer with a healthy sence of paranoia, and a White Hat with a sence of entitlement, I can see both sides of the issue.
Personally I’d look at the cost benifit analysis of the senerio. If you make more money than you but into it (including pay for time, and projects not done for this one) then do it, because it benifits us in that you can maintain your ‘web comic job’ for that much longer. That’ll be true even if we can’t all get in.
And for those who have asked, I don’t like sharing my ISP or EDU email because they’re trackable, and subeona-able. Even if someone manages to get Hotmail to divulge the ‘personal’ info I gave them, the info’s not legit. However, if you had my school ID, you could get my SSN in 20 minutes with a little creative hacking. And (almost) worse, you could then sell my school email, and I start getting spam in an account I can’t just abandon for 89 days to clear out.
I’m from israel, using yahoo as my email address, and the only reason I don’t get the book in paper-form is that the shipment costs about the same as the book, thus doubling the price. Add the fact that I’m a poor student on a limited budget, and u get why that wowio looked attractive up until the point where u said they don’t actually accept people like me. if u can make it work for us forigners I’ll join, but other than that I can’t help al lot.
You might consider setting up a ‘friends of Dreamland’ system, where local U.S. folk might have extra friends and family codes, and could hook up with the folks who might not have such an easy time of signing up. Could help everyone (since signing someone up to your FnF code helps you win an iPod!)
Just a thought!
There is a way around the restriction. Go to Mail.com or other domain like it and set up an account there. They let you choose a subdomain and it doesn’t show up as an anonymous webportal mail and WOWIO accepts it. It worked for me.
Go with Eris on this one. If you’re from outside the US, pretend you aren’t. It’s easy to make a fake email account with a legitimate street adress you gleaned from a TV commercial (Remember Scruff McGruff? Howzabout some California-type sweepstakes adresses?). If you don’t know anything real, I’m sure Google can help you out. Pick five digits and see where it takes you.
I think the Wowio thing is cool, plus you get some income off it!
I am in the process of signing up, and I think this could become very fun and very beneficial for Dreamland!
OOOOH!!!!!!! Forgot to comment on the awsomeness of the Naroobi spread!!!! It looks like purple coral! I like the light-shining-through-the-water look too!
Felicity….
Felicity is a *smirk* CAT FISH! 😛
Felicity seems to have adapted well to the water pretty quick.
Wowio does allow a credit card. Pretty much, Wowio, since its giving money away for downloads, needs to make sure that the people who download are single individuals. By giving a non-anonymous email, a credit card number, or an id scan, they can ensure that only one person is downloading it, so they can’t be scammed like the click fraud that is used on many site advertisements.
Its a nice system, but it does require some spending power to use.
Loving the underwater pages 🙂
Wowio: I can see their point on the e-mail address thing. What I think is utterly ridiculous is US-only sign ups on the World Wide Web. Clearly someone forgot to explain the concept to them…
That said, I doubt very much I’d want to join, anyway.
On an unrelated subject: Scott, I was checking Amazon UK to see if they had Dreamland BK2 listed yet, and I found they don’t even have BK1 listed. You might want to do something about that, if you can.
Oh wow…Nastajia as an elven mermaid…now all we need is at least one full body shot of Nastajia and Alex together under the sea and these renderings will officially kick @$$…
Although Nastajia is giving a look that could make sushi of Felicity right now…
But what happens if Alex wakes up here?
Nicole: I’m sure there’s a rational explanation…
Alex: Rational explanation?! I have a TAIL! At least fifty people saw it including photographers from the New York Times, National Geographic, and the National Enquirer!
Nicole: Still, I’m sure it’s all in your head.
Hmm. Greened eyed jealousy. And I thought cats didn’t like the water. Of course, great work!!
I agree with the “friends of Dreamland” suggestion. I’d be perfectly willing to give out my friend and family codes to readers who’d like to download. Set up a sort of code “penny bowl” to let people who have them leave them, and people who need them take them. I’m sure it’s not that simple, but it might be a nice way for the Dreamland community to help each other out.
What about eReader.com? They mainly sells books, but do offer a few free ones so maybe you could work something out with them. AFAIK, there is no restriction on email addresses either. Better, their ebook format is easily viewable on PalmOS and WinMobile handhelds as well as desktop PCs, whereas Adobe’s PDA support is… well… atrocious.
Looks like Dreamland is number one on the “top download” list on Wowio right now!
Sorry, this is a little late, but… When Alexander is saying, “Wooo!” in yesterday’s comic (and the vote incentive) is he really saying that, or is it supposed to be the surprised expression, “Whoa!”? Maybe, “Wow!” or, “Ooh” would make sense. Orrrr… maybe it was intended to be that way and I’m just not understanding.
You are so awesome for helping me solve this myresty.
