My apologies for not being around as much to reply to all of your posts.
A lot is going on here. A lot of Hollywood deals. A lot of book publishing things.
Just a lot.
We’re still searching for a salesperson for our online advertising.
And just struggling a bit with all that we have to do.
Because of that…I haven’t written the next chapter. I’m behind on my other books…and for the first time in…EVER…I’m feeling like a failure on so many levels.
Now after almost 4 years…I’m sure you’ve never heard me be “down” on my life. And I’m not here.
I just wanted to for once let you know things aren’t ALWAYS rosy here in Dreamland.

Reminds me of a kid in my P.E. class last year. He’d always yell “WE GET TO DO THIS!” It was mainly when we had to do something strenuous.
Hey, your comics are great! Even if you have a slump where you don’t update for a month, we won’t mind! And those that do can just… go read another comic for a while! Seriously though, a fully coloured comic done on a computer every weekday is a rather high workload… Why don’t you just update once a week, maybe a bit more if you’re on a major plot point? I know some people might find it a bit slow, but you’ve been going megas fast, nyoro! [sorry. been watching a lot of anime recently. If you can work out what anime I’m referencing there, I’ll give you lots and lots of cake.]

I think this comic is fantastic and I love that it updates every day. I check it between classes, or, in this case, when I can’t sleep. If you decided to slow down a bit, I’m pretty sure we’d all understand. We don’t want you to get too stressed out…I’ll def. be praying for you Scott!!

oh, being behind schedule is so much part of my life that I always admire people who can keep up with theirs. so far, you’ve done an amazing job. I wouldn’t know how to manage so many things like you did.

Make whatever adjustments you need to get things done in the order of priority. A short hiatus, a temporary cutback in the number of comics per week, whatever.

Remember “It’s a Wonderful Life”? George Bailey goes through incredibly rough circumstances and wishes that he’d never been born. After being shown through the life his friends and loved ones would have without him, he realized how fulfilled his life really was. At the end, when every person in the small town was donating at least a little bit of money to pay off his debts, he ended up with a large pile of cash and a note in a book that said (and here’s hoping I get the quote right) “no man is a failure that has friends”.
Ok, after that long ramble… my point is, we’re all behind you. Donna, I’m sure, is right behind you. You’ve got two adorable (seriously… I’m jealous, lol) little boys. Sometimes you hit thorns in life’s bed of roses, but always remember you have people who care for you right there with you.

1) YAAAAH! Alex is getting himself together. And I suspect that once he FOCUSES we will see that he’s not nearly as think as we dumb he is. 🙂
2) EVERYONE gets frazzled (take a look at my LJ and you’ll see some of my recent annoyances). But if part of your pressure is “Hollywood Deals” and things like that, you ain’t no failure, believe me. (And yes, I know that a “Hollywood deal” doesn’t mean “instantly rich”, but getting ANYONE’S attention in that area takes either special connections or special success). So take a breath, chill, and don’t worry.

Some days you feel invincible. Others you feel completely fragile.
Some days you feel that you could carry your family on your shoulders indefinitely.
Others you wonder if you’re strong enough to take care of them.
We all have highs and lows. I’m just going through a bit of a low point.
And yes….things are going VERY well right now.
But it takes a toll on you. And that is all.

Don’t worry Scott. Yeah, there are times of self-doubt or self-stressing, but you do have a body of work to knock you upside your head to let you know that you are doing good.
I’ve been working for years to develop characters myself and I haven’t done a whole lot of finished worked about them.
So don’t worry about life. Worry only eats you up inside.

Really enjoy the comic. Like the tale, the “lessons”, the artwork.
As for the low points in life, keep doing what you are doing. Remember what’s important. And if you have to drop some things to keep up with the priorities – then drop them. Life is too short to worry about everything.

Please be sure to let the rest of your family know how much they are appreciated as well. Without them backing you up, my life wouldn’t be enriched with Dreamland. I have no doubts about that.
You do a fantastic job, and always have. I just want your family to know their contribution to the success of Dreamland doesn’t go unnoticed. The inspiration they are on you shines thru and really brings the magic to life.

Scott you are not a failure. You know that, I know you do. Life gets frustrating alot just do the best you can with the things you actually have control over and try not to let the rest get to you too much. If you need a break of some kind take it and let the batteries recharge. Even if they are only mini breaks of ten minutes a time where you take a little time for yourself they can still help. I wish I could give you writing advice but I’m no writer, all I can do is say that we’re rooting for you. (Normally I don’t like to speak for others but I figure that’s a pretty safe bet.)

This being my first time comment, I’ll start with telling you I’ve been reading your comic for almost a year and a half. I really like both the story and the Artwork.
Why this particular moment for a first comment? Quite simple, just to tell you that you are doing a fantastic job, putting up a page a day (yes, as a reader, I dread the weekend) and not missing an update once (or none that i’ve noticed of). If the workload for all you do becomes to great, then be smart and notify your readers if you have to lower your pace for the web comic No we won’t cheer when it happens, but most of us would understand. In my really twisted opinion family comes first, but hey i’m just a dork.
Do take care for yourself and your family. And when the movie hits the theaters, please make it come to Europe as well.

The ‘falling short’ that’s got you down is not borne out by what we’ve seen you accomplish here. If you need to take more time than you’d like to get something done, well stuff happens. If you’re finding some things harder to get done than you’d like, well if it were easy in the first place you wouldn’t even be bothered by it. You’re not failing – you’re just establishing where your current limits lie. Those boundaries aren’t necessarily fixed either; it’s a question of where and how you can best put your talents to work and the trade-offs you have to make.
To quote from Bujold, “Aim for the stars – you may miss but at least you won’t shoot yourself in the foot.” I hope your back isn’t bothering you again, because I know how much not being able to work got you down. The story to date just keeps moving along as good or better than ever; you keep finding ways to make the art better, and so on. Maybe your problem is that you’ve been doing such a wonderful job for so long, you’ve stopped seeing how much you ARE doing every day.
I do know that stopping by here every day to see what’s happened next is one of the few things I can count on every day to enjoy. Multiply that by all the people who come here to see the Dreamland Chronicles every day, add in all those who discover it for the first time and are entranced… that’s a gift beyond price. Maybe it doesn’t seem like a lot in the bigger scheme of things – but the universe doesn’t care one way or the other. You’ve made this particular piece of it a lot better which is nothing to be ashamed of.
It’s a human thing to discount what we have in our grasp in favor of things that quite aren’t in reach yet; “remember to take joy.” (Another quote from Bujold.)
One more thing: it’s great to see Alex finally starting to take charge of his own life after drifting for so long. I can see Dan asking next: “Who are you, and what have you done with my brother!”
You are not a failure! What you’ve done is amazing and wonderful and if life has started making you juggle more balls than you can keep in the air, I’m sure we’ll all be more than willing for you to sort things out until the pace is comfortable again.
Hang in there. That light at the end of the tunnel is NOT a train.
One thing that helps me when I’m down is to sit down, take a few deep breaths and count my blessing, and believe me buddy, you have a lot to count. I don’t often speak for everyone, but I hope you guys will let it slide this time =) . We might not be able to do much directly, but know that our hearts and prayers are with you. We believe in you, Scott. You can do it.

Oh, PLEASE don’t make me launch into an anime style “Speech of the Power of Love, Friendship and Believing In Yourself!” I couldn’t take the stress of having to come up with one this time of day. Really, I couldn’t. I was up half the night with a sick kid and I haven’t had enough coffee and not a crumb of lunch yet.
Seriously, though, this is a wonderful site, and the story is amazing and the artwork superior. Feeling a failure and being a failure are totally two different things. One keeps you moving, figuring out how to do better next time and can inspire more work and creativity. The other (being a failure), if true, means you do nothing and just feel bad about it, but not enough to do something about it. I simply can’t see you in the second category.
Chin Up, Spit-Spot, Tally-Ho and all that, what? Enough feeling sorry about stuff you can’t help or prevent. We’re all waiting, patiently – I might add – and with *great* understanding for your busy-ness and feeling of being overwhelmed.

It’s taken me a lot longer to get here than most new readers; I’ve been working my way through the archive since about mid-August. The reason it has taken me so long is that I’ve read each and every comment along the way. (This community is nearly as great and entertaining as the comic itself! And yes, that means that I know what each of you have said along the way; mwahahaha!)
Anyway, as so many others have said, Scott, your work is truly awesome, in every sense of the word. I’m in my late 30’s, and have never been much of a traditional comic fan (my familiarity with most Marvel characters is through cartoons and movies), and I’ve only gotten into a few webcomics over the last couple of years. I’ve never contributed anything significant to any of the other webcomic authors (except for occasional attempts at cleverness in the comments), but since joining the Dreamers, I have clicked voting links, turned off AdBlock (briefly) and clicked ads, and even tried to recruit you some new readers. But most telling is the fact that I plan to buy all of the Dreamland books (probably as a boxed set after you’re finished with them); probably 2 sets, one for each of my sisters (they are twins!). I think my nieces and nephews will really enjoy and benefit from storytelling of this caliber.
Are you blushing yet? Okay; I’ll ease off … 😉
BTW, for anyone reading this, if you haven’t revisited the archives since your first pass through, I recommend another pass through. (I will probably go back through them myself.) I know I, and a few others, have sprinkled some well after the fact comments on our way through to the front lines …
I glad that Alex is finally sure about what he is going to do in Dreamland and not goofing off all the time.

You have a funny way of defining failure Scott 🙂 You are reliable, funny, compassionate, madly in love with your wife, totally enjoying your sons, and juggling a ‘boatload of stuff’. Being human is a blessing, not a curse, keep trucking and know that we can live with human 🙂
Not everyone can say that they have book deals and Hollywood to work with, both are very important as not only do they generate great revenue but they get the word out to a larger audience then those who search for webcomics or attend cons (April 19th 2008 is one of the best days of my life.) With a great team behind you, your movies will be FANTASTIC as the source material is beyond fantastic!
Waiting a while for the next chapter won’t be so painful knowing that you were hard at work ensuring nothing gets completely butchered (Looking at you, “Dark Is Rising” movie, you utter piece of crap you) and that hopefully a small ripple of your book deals ensures that your stuff finds its way onto the shelf at my local Borders (I’m dying to read Gary the Pirate!)
Scott, TDC is not the only webcomic I read. It is how ever the most consistently and professionaly one done by far. And I read ones both smaller and larger than yours. The job you do here is amazing. Do not ever feel down about your work here. You make countless people happy 5 days a week. I always read ech days comic when I get to work. Reading it always makes my day start better. Thank you so much for all of your had work. IT IS APPRECIATED!!!
PS-There is another very famous webcomic who I wont mention by name but I am sure most people here have heard of it. I stopped reading it because the author of it is the exact opposite of you. He takes time off without warning and there is no schedule of comics to speak off but worst of it I feel he can be very rude to his readers. His attitude (to me at least)always seemed to be that we are lucky to be able to share in his creation. From you though I get the opposite: to me it seems like you feel you are lucky that you are able to share this amazing adventure with us. I know you pour your heart and soul into this Scott. And that is all we can ask.
How do I vote? I clicked on Scott’s name but it only brought me back to the comic.
Mr. Scott, if what’s coming next is as good as what I’ve read so far, I’m ready to sit a whole month in front of my screen until the next page shows up, no problemo! This comic is just brilliant (superbly constructed characters), daring (who would think of doing a full 3D drawn comic AND have the energy to keep it up 991 pages so far?), and really gives a new definition of the word “fairytail”. I’m a stalker of many comics, but by far, Dreamland is the most alive one I have ever seen. Really you shouldn’t feel like a failure, just look back at what you and your team accomplished, and if that is not a major achievement, may I be turned into a pickle. All the effort you put into this comic has cheered up thousands of people (let me be witness to that, even people in FRANCE read TDC), and I look forward to see it becoming a bestseller.

I (as are a lot of people these days) am just struggling with our finances due to studios owing us money and things just generally taking their time.
But I DO know that it’s “all good” and will work itself out.
But the stress of parenthood and husbandhood (is that a word? If not…it should be) and being the “provider” does take its toll on us sometimes.
THis will pass. I know it will.

You have no reason to feel bummed out; the work you are doing is immense. Take all the time you require to “get on top” of what is overwhelming you. You are doing us a tremendous service posting Dreamland and we appreciate all your hard work. Do not allow yourself to feel guilt or “failure” for having so much SUCCESS to deal with involving Dreamland and your other projects. Ignore those mental zombies and work out what you need to do to be involved with your family and other business. They come first. We will be here waiting; we’ll leave the light on for you!

Agreed. Except that first paragraph (hope you can catch a nap soon and get some thing to eat, if you can). That being said, I do have the energy, time, and temperament to write one. Just no clue on what to write, or more accurately, how best to phrase it. Here goes my best shot any ways. I can honestly say with a straight face that I suck at art in most if not all of its forms. That you can do the story line and art for a webcomic that you update five days out of every week normally with very few days missed, is a monumental undertaking to me when its just an idea. That you do it, and it turns out as well as it does so consistently is an artistic wet dream for me. So now that you are feeling the stress of the comic, your family, and us, your showing a little of how old you really are. In that same light, nothing has changed since you started doing Dreamland except your age, the number of fans you have, how active your family is, and how many people would like you to remain relatively sane. Basically, either take a break from the comic, or take a vacation and don’t do any thing you don’t want to. Its your choice Scott. Decide, and if some one doesn’t like what you decided just because they want more pages, then they can draw up their own pages.
We are fans, some of us friends, its what we do. I think we do a pretty good job of it. Now, should we all do like a quick video for you to prove it (the ones of us who have webcams or appropriate software mainly) or should we just find a way to pressure some of the studios to think about getting rid of a few debts, or what?
Except for the advertisement reminders in the last part, I agree.
I know it’s not much, but I turned of AdBlock and clicked madly on every ad I could find on your page.
It’s all I can do right now, but every little bit helps, right?
And I think I’ll look over the finances again, and see if I can’t justify a store purchase or two for gift occasions …

Man, I’ve been reading webcomics for a long while now but this is the first time i’ve seen a literal landslide of comments just flowing with the good vibes for the artist.

You mean between 2 kids, a lovely wife, multiple work projects, a recent move and more you are feeling a bit over-whelmed?!? What a pansy – I mean the rest of us all just manage to do it all effortlessly – with a constant smile on our face, whistling a jaunty tune and dancing a little jig as we go….
Oh wait, yesterday I forgot to take my oldest to Science Night at school so she could pick up this year’s science packet because I had to get things laminated for the school party which is today and my husband is out of town, about which I forgot to schedule the babysitter so I could pick him up at the airport and I really still need to go to the grocery to buy apples for “Fall Fun Day’ since the kids are out of school and I really need to get to work on my website, not to mention trying to find a way to pick up 25 bicycles for a charity I support and…..well, you get the idea….we all have our days – the more you have that you know you are grateful for the easier it is, but the harder it is, because you can’t be perfect all the time, even though you know they deserve it.
Anybody else hear the “Be a Man” song from Mulan playing as they read that last panel?

And yeah, both the “I’m with stupid” and “Initech” shirts have been commented on before. They are pretty cool, though. Did you notice the “Inigo Montoya” shirt a ways back? It featured heavily in the comments, too …
