Page 1209…
What can I say about yesterday?
You guys are the best fans (and I hate to call anyone a fan…I prefer “Fellow Dreamers”…or something of that kind) in the world.
Let me break down some statistics for you.
On an AVERAGE day…we get about 100,000 page views.
On an AVERAGE day…we bring in about $40 in ad revenue.
On an AVERAGE day…we get about 40-50 ad clicks.
That’s about a .4% click through rate.
But yesterday. Simply by you wonderful people unblocking the ads for our site.
With none of you doing anything more than coming to my site. Some of you clicking an ad or two (of your own free will. I’m not allowed to encourage it).
By this simple gesture. We earned over $300 yesterday in ad revenue.
Now I know it’s not normal for people to talk about how much you bring in and such.
I know it might be seen as “unprofessional”.
But this is what happens when good people do good things.
And I want you all to know that something as simple as turning off an ad block to help us out….did THAT!
Thank you.
Thank you for letting those ads show up when reading this page.
Thank you for checking out some of our advertisers.
Thank you for being involved. For interacting with me.
Thank you for making The Dreamland YOUR world as well as mine.
Thank you, my fellow dreamers.
π
Scott
well, i’m pretty happy to help you out. I started reading sunday and finished everything in 2 days, am now so much wishing it to continue! thx for the voting button you put back too, good addition!
Glad to be of assistance. I’ve unblocked ads for you π
Just saw the announce on the top, good idea, might get people who don’t read the blog! also, first (even if i hate those who do this!)
I’d unblock ads, but I’m not sure how to do it on safari. I see ads on the site though, so I think they’re already unlocked.
Sorry I’ve fallen off the radar. Exams were a pain.
By the way, Scott: I love the Felicity sketch in my copy of Dreamland Vol. 4.
Always happy to help! ^.^
Like the “for luck” thing. Reminds me of Star Wars.
LOL, I first thought Nastajia was going to lecture him one last time or something, but maybe I am just ridiculously tired. Didn’t realize how late it was.
I’m glad we could help, Scott. π
I would also really like to help, but I’m also not sure how to unblock ads for just one site on Firefox. If someone knows how to do it and can post it here, I, and probably everyone else who doesn’t know how to do it, would be glad.
totally thought the same thing. Except that I imagined Leia and Han in Bespin just before he went into the carbon-freezing chamber.
To Scott:
I can’t afford to purchase anything right now, but I CAN click on links.
I had this horrible squee moment when I saw the smooch, its been a while since I saw N/A mushy-ness hurrah!! And I clicked an ad *LOL* Glad to help ^^
Presuming you’re using AdBlockPlus (ABP stop sign in upper right corner of browser), click on the arrow just to the right of it and select “Disable ads on http://www.thedreamlandchronicles.com.”
delurking again to ask; how would newer readers be able to read the unobstructed correspondence between Felicity, Nicole, Orion, and Daniel from Chapter 14?
Hmm… I suppose no motivational speech for the army?
π You’re welcome. More festive cheer in green paper form for you!
The ads on your page don’t have audio, don’t block my view, and are mostly relevant to the page. I have no problem with them in the least
wheeeee Star Wars reference!! ^.^
if it’s in homage to any scene, it’s Luke and Leia on the Death Star in Star Wars (just Star Wars, thank you very much. Not A New Hope.)
Hahaha Staj’s way of telling Felicity to back off? π
& Scott, thank /you/ for making such a fantastic webcomic; a few clicks here and there are nothing!
I don’t mind the ads on Dreamland – they’re silent, they don’t obscure the comic, and they’re even actually relevant to the southern continent I live on. π
I always unblock the ads on sites I visit regularly. Tis only fair!
To be honest, I DETEST ads. I’d rather pay for a subscription, so, I do NOT click the ads ,sorry Scott, but I DO regularly donate a couple of Dollars, order books, order page-prints, etc.
But, then again, I am an older dude and I have the income to donate to many sites I frequent. I understand that a lot of the younger folks that read TDC do not have that luxury.
For now I have unblocked the ads ,but the moment they start peddling stuff with animations that suck-up resources ,animated gifs (that make my I-Mac go into a tizzy…) and flash-junk, It will be “goodbye ads”
PS: on kickstarter, Donna asked me something about my order. I have answered, but now I do not know if my order will be processed before X-Mas. I know ,I know ,I messed-up and misunderstood the different versions one could order in the US and those for the rest of the world. So ,please ,could You tell me if my order is processed? my kickstarter-name is the same as my comment name.
Thanks a lot! I just found it out myself and would have posted it here, if there hadn’t already been an answer. The thing is, I usually disable the ABP icon in my browser’s menu. So I wasn’t entirely aware of it’s functions.
I hope other people will get use of this!
Or make use of this, rather. π
I just wanted to say, on behalf of people who detest ads (again) that yours are not overall that offensive. I appreciate that I’ve seen no flash ads (IRRITATING!) or moving ads in general on your site. That’s usually why I block a page. Keep that up and I have no problem letting this page filter through AdBlock!
I, for one, did not realize until this week that ads could be selectively unblocked for a particular site. I am happy to view the ads and even click on a few now and then. We LOVE being your fellow dreamers. I hope this revenue flood makes your Christmas very Merry!
BTW, we got our book and other goodies. Thank you so much for offering the sword necklace!! π
I’d like some of that good luck π
Morning! I also thought Nastajia was going to lecture him, but d’awwww! Great smooch. π
I don’t mind the ads on the site either. They’re not intrusive or annoying. I won’t click on them tho (sorry) as I’ve had bad experiences in the past with ad/malware and I reeeeally don’t want my Scott hollering at me again. lol! But you can always count on me to donate in other ways. π
That was unexpected. I have an ad blocker installed on firebox (Adblock Plus), which is currently active and without configuring special filter rules, it doesn’t block anything of this webpage (0 of 281 blocked) although is blocks some of the annoying flash popups on other sites. So I don’t understand, why so many people have to do something about their adblocker to show all of the ad content.
Because of what’s said, yes….it’s more of an homage to the scene in the original Star Wars; however, the presumed intensity of the kiss here surpasses the one Leia gave Luke…which does give it a bit of the flavor of the scene in Empire Strikes Back right before Han gets frozen. π
I don’t believe that Scott has ever shown the unubstructed correspondence. I know I’ve never seen it.
Gah! UnObstructed….I got U happy. π
Well then it’s a good thing Scott gets income just from us allowing the ads to load on this page. π Now you don’t need to worry about clicking them. Here’s hoping they continue to fall into the “safe, non-energy-sucking” realm.
I dunno. I gotta wonder if Nastajia was putting in a little last minute reminder of where his best kisses come from after Felicity’s bold charge forward. =) Either way, it was nice. I do so like it that those two get a moment’s enjoyment now and then.
They had probably gone out of their way to block ads more aggressively. π
Hully, if you are not seeing ads where Scott indicates they are (top of the page, a couple on the right side, and one at the very bottom) then Adblock Plus is doing it’s job. I am also using Adblock Plus, and by default it blocks the ads.
I’m wondering, is Felicity going to be watching Alex back, or vice-versa? I predict some serious drama and soul searching in the making!! Really enjoying the preliminaries!!
Huh…am I the only person who didn’t think there was any jealousy remaining between Nastajia and Felicity after the centaur village?
This was a very sweet surprise, Scott. π Thanks for starting my morning well!
On a completely different topic, I just got my WOWIO december newsletter, and saw that Gary the Pirate is the free ebook of the month. Some extra spotlight never hurts!
I think the problem is, and this is a big part of why piracy is so prevalant, is that people are used to getting something for nothing. Subscription models arn’t really all that common now, everything is supported by ad revenue but to the casual consumer that just means that it’s free for them. So they never gauge the impact that blocking ads has on the content provider. They just think “It’s free”.
In all fairness, the Highlander add was just too good to not click….
^_^
The ad makers are also part of the issue. I don’t normally allow ad’s becuase the ad makers are using up _my_ cpu cycles, power and memory to show _their_ ads, which i have not interest in seeing in the first place. Like JurgenS, if they are static no-resource using add, then okay, but as soon as they start adversely affecting my systems and my time they go away.
In short ad makers brought ad blockers on themselves. I also, don’t think the compensate the ad hosts nearly enough for the eye ball value it gets them.
I think I have those around.
Maybe I can put them up as vote incentives?
That’s coming.
Turns out…those are kind of fun to write.
π
Thank you.
So glad you got the books and necklace too.
Have a wonderful Christmas!
Yes. Yes I can.
π
Thank you, Christine!
that would be tempting, yes.
Yup.
Women are blatantly “subtle” like that…eh?
π
Yup.
I’m sure it was a long kiss too.
Just to make sure.
π
π
I don’t know what makes me more misty,
your huuuuuge THANK YOU note to us, Fellow Dreamlanders -would like to make a T-Shirt and send pic of it… ah, imagination’s a beautiful thing! π – or the “For Luck” kiss, huge homage to Star Wars AND, well, a nice reminder that after all they are just kids… even when Nastajia is too severe (she has to, she IS a princess) most of the time, she is a beautiful character with a good heart. Just like the bucket-head that’s running into battle with Creeps-R-Us.
I don’t have enough cash to buy your books. However, you ARE getting my support with the ads madly and deeply.
‘Member: we? We don’t rock alone dude. YOU rock harder for having the talent and brains to bring this comic to life. Thnx to u, and all of who support you (and blame the long post on Christmas Season, what the hell, I’ma softie).
Now, let the battle unfold… *_*
Hey Jurgen…
Yes. You’ve been a great supporter for us. And I totally respect that.
Thank you.
We’re cool.
π
As for the Kickstarter.
You did pay for the regular book. But wanted the limited edition cover.
I have some still available. If you’d like to donate $25 for the “upgrade”, you can use the donation banner at the top right.
To be honest. I saw that you already donated $10 for the desktop. So if you’d like to add an additional $15….that would square things up.
You’ve been so generous to date in the past.
Thank you so much.
Oh?
Cool. I’ll post about it tomorrow.
Thanks!
Thank you ALL!
My apologies for not responing to every post.
Yesterday kicked my butt emotionally.
In a good way.
Couple things.
1) Thanks to your support…we’re on pace already for a repeat of yesterday. So thank you all again.
2) I’m so glad you all caught my little homage to Star Wars.
Guarantee. At SOME point…Nastajia will profess her love for Alexander and he shall respond with “I know”.
I just need to figure out the right time.
π
3) Yes. The kiss is a “not so subtle” way of letting Felicity know who has “dibs” on the boy.
I’m sorry. I really am. I simply cannot read a web page with animations on it. That’s why I turn off the ads. So many of them are animated. They distract me from the content and I simply can’t read with the animations going on.
I tried to turn off the ad blocking on your page. I was pleasantly surprised. The vast majority of them were static. I could live with that. I could read your page, you’d get the eyes and all was good.
But there was one. One animated ad, but one is all it takes. It was a Project Wonderful ad, and while I tried to focus on the kiss, the head moving back and forth distracted me and I could not focus. I had to turn off ads. If it wasn’t for that one animated ad for The Dreamland Chronicles, I would be happy to unblock ads for you. But I can’t.
I hope you understand.
Thanks for the help.
And thank you all for chipping in.
Hey Mike.
I do understand. And I appreciate you telling me.
Another solution could always be unblocking AFTER you read. Refreshing. Checking out the ads. ANd then reblocking.
But that’s in NO way as important as you just coming by and enjoying the story.
I really appreciate you reading. Thanks.
It’s the least we could do. And we SHOULD do something to show our appreciation!!
Saw the thank you post and spent the time figuring out how to disable ad blocking by site. I may even click on a few π
I finished it in two days too once I found this a week ago.
Welcome to both of you.
π
Thaks for reading.
π
Thanks Dan!
Thank you Laura!
Aha! I knew that she was going to do that! π
By the way, I visit this site every day, even when there isn’t a new page.
Merry Christmas,
Oh! And thanks for the great comic. ^_^
I have never seen an add blocker on this site, but if there was, I am glad I wouldn’t have clicked on it.
Does this mean Alex is going to turn out to be her brother? π
I’m not a teen, however, so I don’t want to be clicking on adds that my parents might not like.
Alex: Say Dan, guess what? We’ve got a sister, and I’ve kinda accidentally been dating her.
Dan: Bad Alex! No biscuit for you!
I’ve been blocking ads for years, in fact installing an adblocker is one of the first things I do when trying a new browser. It wasn’t really until your “unprofessional” message giving actual details about how doing something simple like unblocking the ads here can help you so much that I’ve thought twice about that policy, especially on a site like this that I always look forward to visiting.
At times I feel guilty about not being able to support the site in more substantial ways but if I can help out that much just by peeking at a few dumb ads, sign me up!
Hey Mike. I don’t know what you’re using to block ads but I know with NoScript you get the option to selectively block of unblock content from different sites that are trying to load with the page. This means if I needed to I could block Project Wonderful while still letting all the other ads go through. It’s a way to at least let Scott get some of the advertising revenue for each pageview without having to mess with your blocker every day.
I also use AdBlock, but I’ve always had Project Wonderful whitelisted, so their ads show up on any site. PW’s ads are almost always safe and usually pretty worthwhile, don’t see the point in blocking them.
To those of you using AdBlock Plus who want to do the same, go into AdBlock Plus preferences, click Add Filter, and enter this rule:
@@|*.projectwonderful.*
This will allow all PW ads through. Project Wonderful is THE major advertising service used by webcomics, and even just views help out a lot! And I’d like to think that for most of you, this is not the only webcomic you read.
PW gives a lot of control to webcomic creators regarding what ads actually show up (unlike most ad networks), so if there’s an ad on a webcomic, there’s a good chance the webcomic creator wants that ad to be there. Even those who auto-approve ads can refuse a bad ad at any time.
Thank you Tim.
π
Thanks Eishiya…
Actually the Project Wonderful ads do NOT bring us revenue in the same way the other ads do.
It’s the google ads at the top, right (below the project wonderful) and the bottom.
Those are the important ones.
I just have to chime in here guys…as the wifey…I really appreciate all of your support over the years! Scott has worked so hard on Dreamland and we can’t believe all the love and support that has come from you all over the years! As I’m sure you all know (and probably some of you are in our boat too) this past year has been a true struggle financially! Scott wants to continue doing what he loves and with the advertising he’s trying to keep our family afloat and still be able to do what he loves! We are managing and SO THANKFUL for each and everyone one of you…whether you buy our books, donate on the site or simply unblock and check out on ad every once in a while…WE APPRECIATE EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU! May you all have a blessed holiday season!!!
Done & done.. plus a tiny extra as an x-mas present. buy yourself & Donna some egg-nogg and some cranberry juice for the kids (ocean spray=the best!).. π
Exactly! I don’t mind banners and such as long as they aren’t obstructing anything. I angrily blocked many sites that pusher their “shove-over” ads..ugh.. they lost my clicks over them. many people with me are tired of pop-unders;pop-overs;shove-overs etc. Luckily the ads here are just a minor animated nuisance in he corner of my eyes.. I just use Ctrl +scroll-wheel to blow up the page to fill my 21″..works great.(makes me appreciate Scotts detailing of the graphics even more…)
On free stuff: I am of pre-web vintage, so I am still not too used to “something for nothing” so it is second nature for me to donate for stuff I enjoy on the interwebs. Hey, if I do not do that, the guys and gals that make great tools like “AdBlock”…:evil grin: and sites with user-made mods (take tessource f.i.) will eventually go bust..hosting cost money, hosting for big content AND bandwith is bloody expensive.. So. I donate.
‘S easy, button is in the upper-right, and You’ll get a super detailed desktop to boot..
Nah, don’ worry about your parents kid. Scott keeps a strict eye on the content of most ads. The comic is for all ages after all. There’s nothing here that a normal walk through a mall wouldn’t also show you.
On the kiss: I see it as an affirmation from Nasti towards Alex that he is still THE One for her, and that she also knows that Felicity, despite her teenie-crush on Alex, isn’t a real danger. I keep advocating that Felicity actually sees Alex as the big-brother-best-friend she always wanted since Nicole left, and Alex was the one, bless his good heart, that got her out of her coma after the treason-arc. For Felicity it is more of a funny&good-natured game to tease Alex, while for Nasti, Alex is her future-husband and probable king. Alex is far too smitten with Nasti, to be influenced by Felicity’s teasing.(Although…Dan’s position here will lead to some interesting developments, no doubt)
I’d like that–I was away that week, and missed at least two of the four…
π
Thanks a bunch, Jurgen.
We’ll get that out ASAP.
Oh. Did you happen to email DOnna who you wanted sketched on the cover?
Thank you for producing this comic and being such a nice person. π
I don’t usually turn off adblock for anything, but I don’t mind helping to support this comic when you work so hard to produce quality daily updates for us.
I love the comic and I can’t wait to see how this works out!
wow, i didn’t know this comic got that much! ur welcome! anything to keep the comic going, i like how this comic is going and want to see how it ends.
Cute!!!
Thank you Kitty!
Thanks to you all I should have no problem finishing the story, now.
π
You are welcome.. π
Question for tech savvy people!
I couldn’t get the ads to show up until I told noscript to allow openx.org. Is there a way to tell noscript to only allow openx.org when it’s called from this site?
I started reading this two days ago, finished over night and now eagerly await each new page. Keep it up, this is one of my new favourite web comics! π
Oh and I made sure the ad blocker was off, I had never really been aware of it till now. I hope you continue bringing in as much revenue.
I see all the ads. That’s strange. My Adblock plus only blocks ads, I intentionally want to block instead of blocking all the ads, he can find. Perhaps I have configured something a long time ago, I don’t know ^^
I believe I did, but just to be sure ,I mailed to Your scott (at) adress.
Thanx a bunch..I cannot wait to see it. (Don’t worry that it won’t be here before X-mas I am happy enough as it is π “All good things take time”)
Sweet, I see it now! =D
Sigh, here it changes again! π
I just wanted to say happy new years. π
Oh look! Me and kitty have the same avi!
Nastajia: “For luck.”
Alexander: “Okay then. Let’s do this! LEEEEERRROOOYYY…JEEENNNNNNKINS!”
Ah! Mine was blocking your ads as well, but that has been fixed! I really appreciate all the work you put into this, so thank you for letting me know a way to give back to you π
At least he’ll end up with chicken.
