Whether Bill Gates is good or not is irrelevant. Being a nerd worked out well FOR Bill Gates, which is the important supporting point. (And for the record, most of us prefer the term “geek”.)
As for the smack, Alex totally had it coming after the stunt he pulled the previous day, trying to manipulate his mom into embarrassing Dan. She is NOT a controlling bitch, and whoever said that is probably an out of control teenager who deserves a smack themselves.
(My $0.02 worth, and probably only worth about $0.001 at that … )
Yeah. What’s with Dan and sprinting through the house?
Looks like he’s floating in the air.
And you don’t hear Ma screaming at Dan to stop running in the house.
Kinda obvious which one’s the Mama’s Boy here.
Remember when Alex said his world is “nothing special” and “there’s no other place I’d rather be [than in Dreamland]”? Well, if Dreamland is so much more interesting, then why doesn’t he sneak off sometimes to take extra naps? Like maybe outside, under a shade tree or something?
Kinky wild sex in a comic will not damage the readers. And makes good viewing IMO.
Demonstrating child abuse as normal can do a lot of damage. Granted Alex is no longer a child but I would assume mom is acting out of habit.
It is not necessarily the blow to the head. Use of corporal punishment is still debated. Lashing out before thinking and while still angry makes it abusive.
I’m an adult. But heck, even when I was a teenager I knew my mother viewed me as an investment and getting rid of me before I could take care of myself would be more of a blow to her than to me. And family or not, she wasn’t stupid enough to slap someone more physically able than herself, to say nothing of my tendency towards Lex Talionis.
Ain’t like I’m advocating passing out armlocks like its wrestling-christmas… but if your mother treated you like Alex’s mother treats him, I’d recommend doing something about it.
Nerd and Geek aren’t the same.
Both imply a certain level of fascination with a subject or subjects… BUT …
A nerd typically obsesses over academic subjects while a geek typically obsesses over pop-culture… and obviously there is a certain degree of cross-over.
For instance, I’m a biology nerd and a gamer geek… I could go on at length about the mating habits of fig wasps or protomammalian anatomy as I could about location (and nature) of all the Daedric Artifacts in the last three Elder Scrolls games.
Got love mothers, no matter how old you get they can still take you down a notch or three
Ah, parenting.
From the size of his handwriting seen previously, he should have a lot more books than that.
Hey! Being a nerd can be a good thing. Look at Bill Gates
Like my Mom always says: “Your NEVER to old for me to go UPSIDE YO HEAD!!”
If my mother tried doing that to me, let alone over something so minor, I’d have her in an armlock on the floor and begging for mercy within seconds…
Such hubris. Alex should learn to stand up for himself and not accept such behaviour.
lol one of the lwas of life by bill gates
be nice to nerds you will probobly end up working for one
If I tried to armlock my mom id be injured, homeless, and bitched out
Next comic: Alex has a concussion.
rofl. Dan gets coddled and Alex gets the back of the head shot
It may be rude, but it’s true nonetheless.
wow alex’s mom is a controlling bitch through and through.
Wow, Dan’s in the middle of an extremely cartoony run in the first panel.
Besides, Mom always liked Daniel best…
Ravyn, Bill Gates is *not* good
i do that all the time!!!!!…..i watch to much NCIS……it my signature move
Wow. I guess super-strength runs in the family, then.
nope, it’s just her voice.
maziecat, it’s all a matter of interpretation. Like I find Steve Jobs to be a bastard salesman.

😉
She says as she smacks him on the head.
Tek, as someone who did actually grow up in a control freaked environment and actually know what that’s like, I completely agree with you.
And props to the guy who adopted the “Gibbs Smack” move. 🙂
haha alex gust got dinozzoed!!! POWNIG!!
Most maybe, but not all. I’ve never really liked the way geek felt in my mouth, so I call myself a nerd all the time.
Surely he can read the books ………. outside?
That Alex cracks me up!
You would also have become A) homeless or B) a ward of the state. 😀

Yeah, what’s Ma telling Alex he should go outside for fresh air when Dan is the one who’s obviously stuck in his room all the time?

Child Abuse FTW
One wonders whether Alex Carter had a great uncle named Randolph Carter.
He too, was an explorer of the Dreamlands–albeit in the Nightmare Realms.
i feel a twinge of pride at calling myself/being called a nerd.
i am.
y deny it?
Gibbs Slap!!!!

Cthulhu fhtagn.

Ten years on, and I gotta say I don’t think quite so badly of Mamma here.
