Page 895…
Hey guys.
This is the Nastajia we all know and love…right?
But honestly…Alex has it coming.
And I love his question (and Nastajia’s response).
๐
ย
Also…
Anyone using IE having trouble with my website?
I’m getting errors and problems where the site is locking up.
But only in IE.
ย
If anyone’s a web person. And knows why and how to fix it…I’d appreciate it.
It seems to be coming from a bad line in an ad code or something. I don’t know.
And YES…I know safari is “better” and firefox is “better” or whatever.
But I’d like the site to work on ALL sites if possible. And this just popped up last week.
Thanks in advance for any help.
ย
Scott
I think Nastajia’s being a bit bossy… ๐ This is the first time in ages they’ve been able to properly relax for a bit, why start talking about life decisions and other serious stuff? She needs to chill ๐
And on the reverse, I believe Alex is coming off as way too dumb and a lot less likable. He is in his 20’s. Surely he has tried speaking like that to a girl sometime and been smacked for it. I really hate to say anything negative as i love this comic, but it is coming off as a bit too…surreal for me to get into the storyline. I know i have no right to criticize as you are already doing work far beyond anything i could do, but i just wanted to offer my perspective as an average reader. I hope i render no ill will from you for my statement.
Scott: I’m not sure about the IE thing, but I emailed you about your desire to make the TWC banners more permanent.
I pulled up your site in IE 6 (latest I’ve got installed in my virtual machine), and it came up just fine (no warnings, no errors, no real obvious visual glitches).
Speaking of TWC, everyone should vote: http://www.topwebcomics.com/vote/4274/default.aspx
TechSupport: It’s sounding like it might be one of your Microsoft updates that’s happened within the last week or so or a possible change in the firewall. Without reading the specific errors it’s hard to pin it down.
Worst. Proposal. Ever.
I’m definetely having problems with IE. On my brother’s computer, I clicked an ad, something having to do with exotic travel or food or something, and the site started freaking out. Ever since, if I come onto the site, there’s a good chance it’ll tell me of some kind of error and “operation is aborted” and I lose the page. If I refresh it, it’ll be fine, 90% of the time, but that only happens on his comp.
On my computer, (We both use IE) if I visit the site, comment, click on ads, vote, then everything’s fine. But if I try to move to a different site altogether, it’ll load forever, and when I close out the page, I get a message saying the site is busy, am I sure I want to close it out?
I had a hard time sleeping, so I decided to check the new page, and I am so glad I did, even if the wait just got longer for the next page. This page is simply AWESOME! Nastajia’s expression in the fourth panel is PRICELESS! Good to see Alex knows where this is going, even if he completely screwed up on how to lead into it.
Looks like we’re going to see another $500 shot. This time of the gory mess inside Alex’s head as Nastajia introduces his nose to the inside of the back of his skull. Hehe.
Of course that would never happen รขโฌโ as it would finally reveal the true contents of Alex’s brainpan. I theorize that it is a ball of cheese and grape jelly otherwise floating in a near perfect vacuum.
It worked just fine on my IE program. I use firefox normally, but fired up IE just to check. No probs here.
Kitsunewolf *gg* to cite Hitch, the Date Doctor: “does a man ever get it right on the first run? Noooo!”
and oh well well He soooo had it coming to him. Now, Alex, get your ass tight and make up your fuzzy mind. Stop being SUCH a douchebag. ^^ (scott – you ‘re gonna have him come to sense, ain’t you?)
I’ve never understood why the Dreamlanders need a human king anyway. Can’t they rule themselves? They may be products of our imagination and need us to exist, but how does that necessitate a human ruler? I’m not saying the dragon ought to be in power, but why not the elven or dwarven ruler, or a council? I adore the comic, but I have never liked the “human king” aspect of it at all. Nastaja seems much more qualified to govern than Alex, in many, many ways. She’s a native, she’s responsible, she’s a leader, she’s been groomed for it her entire life.
All you Alex / Nastaja shippers may not want to read the next bit. I don’t want those two to get together. They’re childhood friends, but their personalities don’t seem compatible to me. Alex has some growing up to do. I realize this is a “hero’s journey” type story, and I’m sure he’ll grow and become a great leader at the end, but why should Nastaja have to wait that long? Isn’t there anyone around now who has the qualities she’s looking for in a man?
Lest you think I’m being mean and negative, I do read this comic avidly, recomment it to my friends, and eagerly await each new page. The art is lovely, the setting charming, and I do like most of the characters quite a bit (just not Alex). ๐
Why do I have the strange feeling that a lot of men out there have experienced the same thing!!
Oh jeez. Normally I eagerly anticipate the next comic, but now I’m sort of dreading it. Poor Alex, we barely knew ye…
Alex has a rather big tendency to put his foot in his mouth, doesn’t he. And it’s not like that’s an easy feat wearing all that armour. ๐
he’s asking for trouble….
cant wait till next one.
Oh come on why’s everyone gotta be hating on Alex, he is an average 20 year old male that has just basically been told “So we gonna get married or what?” by Nas. If this would have happened to me at 20 I’d probably react in the same manner, I didn’t know what I wanted out of life at 20, heck i’m 26 now and STILL don’t know what I want out of life. So I’m just saying give the guy a break.
Hi. First – I love this comic:-)
and second – I have no issues with IE here.
I agree with Monkey– it’s not like in real life we magically mature, knowing what we should do in life the very moment we turn 18 or something. hell, 20-year-olds are usually in college… which is basically just another version of high school. so why expect an fictional character to be more than a typical 20-year-old, even though he’s supposed to be exactly just that?
Huh, looking at her reaction, I kinda think Nastajia wasn’t talking about that…
Yeah. 4th panel. She really wasn’t talking about “us”
She is more frustrated by Alex’s lack of ambition. The whole time, he’s been just going with the flow and hasn’t shown one ounce of leadership. She loves him, but doesn’t want to have a relationship with a potato.
Anyways as far as having a human king for Dreamland… well it worked for Narnia didn’t it?
I’m with Sparcman here. Alex is a nice guy, but a bit slow and more than a little oblivious at times. First he totally manages to miss the entire romantic atmosphere, and now he’s completely missed what Nastajia is driving at. He’s got a huge responsibility in Dreamland, even if he doesn’t want to be king. And he doesn’t seem to really be taking it seriously, and certainly isn’t trying to deal with it directly. He’s just letting things happen to him and reacting, and if Dreamland is going to have a chance, he needs to wake up (heh) and start taking a more active role. For better or worse, he’s the one with the sword and the responsibility that comes with it.
Hubby’s a coder. Told him about your browser problems, if he has any clues he’ll post/email.
Otherwise? I think Nastajia is just a little bit concerned with the guy Alex has become… Someone to whom everything is a joke; “war” means nothing to him, and everything to her.
And why do I think that the “right” king for DL is Dan… prolly because of his “inability” to get there, which could easily be due to Nicodemus…
Older versions of IE were not remotely dom compliant and did not do div tags well, or rather did them differently. Newer versions of IE fix this problem, but if it really bothers you then you could make sure your not using floating divs to build the margin on the right. There are a lot of resources out there to resolve these issues, but most required making two different styles for your page based on detecting the browser.
Unfortunately, Stajia does have a point; and of course, Alex is turning the romantic mood very, very sour. So Alex of Burg, I mean, of Dreamland, want some salt with your foot?
Alex, you`re such a dork! ๐
I`m not having troubles with the site in IE. ๐
I’ve experienced the issue with IE 6, but it’s intermittent. Normally, the site runs fine, but once it hits that glitch it comes up “internet explorer cannot open this page” gives the standard hexadecimal code, etc… other than that, I cannot provide any further information that might be of use, since the page goes to error before I can notice what ads were showing at the time, etc… Normally, the page loads fine with no problems. Occasionally I get a similar error when using the webmail provided by my host, so the problem might be an intermittent glitch that occurs due to flash/java/javascript not loading properly. If I receive the error again, I will attempt to write down the full error message, and try to make note of any ads on screen before it goes to an error page state.
The problem has to do with whether you have broadband or not, rather that if you are using IE or not.
IE tends to throw an error if some content is loaded too slow or in the wrong order.
ok, wrong reaction, prepare for the storm ๐
No trouble using IE 8 here (I’ve got all the updates and am *not* using compatibility mode).
OOoooh he looks like he’s gonna get slapped. >.> With that one commin out of the woodwork though, I kinda don’t blame her.
Scott, I use IE all the time and I’ve never come across a problem viewing Dreamland. I visit the site daily and loooooove the comic.
some how I see a slap coming
Ahem…dear alex…
YOU FOOL!
I always come to the site using IE and I’ve never had any problems.
And as for Alex. I think he’s meant to be depicted as a ‘typical’ jock. Brawn in plenty, brains in lacking. In contrast, his brother is a ‘typical’ brainiac. If his brother ever gets to Dreamland (though how I wonder since Alex needs the sword to do it) he would probably end up his brother’s advisor or something.
That is, if Alex survives the next update….Nastajia will probably rip him a new one and Alex being Alex, probably won’t understand why.
Well, if I was Daniel, the first thing I would have done is to borrow the sword necklace for one night.
The first time worked fine, but now all I get in IE7 is
“Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://thedreamlandchronicles.com/ Operation aborted”
And sometimes after that IE7 will hang.
It does it after it loads most of the page, and the jukebox, but before the banner ad, so maybe the problem resides there.
I agree with some of the other comments. I’m more annoyed with Alex right now. Sure, he could be somewhat clueless, but this is a level of both apathy and dumb that is getting beyond the amusing. He should have SOME ambitions for the future — at the least, involving his Princess — and he’s old enough to not be totally incompetent about it, even if he IS a bit of a slacker. He should be smoother than his geeky brother, at least, and right now his brother’s looking more socially adept.
I think Alex is just being a typical college kid who waits until graduation day to worry about the future. The problem is that in Dreamland he is anything but a typical college kid…
IE is fine here … but Alex aint!
Last week was so nice … and then just like real life, “stuff happens” and we see the two of them just about to ruin it … lol !
I love it and cant wait to see where it goes the rest of the week …I agree with the prediction of a slap.
I’ve been getting the whole
“Cannot open the Internet site… Operation abortedรขโฌย
for the past three weeks. Usually if I refresh 2 or 3 times it works. Only happening on this site, haven’t noticed it anywhere else yet.
D: I read the whole story in one night..I need Moar xD
Let’s see, Nastajia takes ‘Duty’ seriously, afterall, it is what she has been prepared for her whole life. Alex really hasn’t had to worry (or think about) anyone other than himself.
To expect Alex to think beyond, “she must want me to propose,” to even consider things like ‘Duty’ and ‘Responsibility’ is a stretch for Alex.
After all, for one to mature, to understand what is and is not possible, to understand duty and responsibility is, from what I understand, the reason humans are ‘deported’ from Dreamland in the first place.
So Humans, if you read the arch like a comic book you may think it shallow or superficial. If, however, you read it as serious (or semi-serious) literature, meaning you think about it, you will find plenty of depth.
Oh my, I just flashed back to my high school English teacher. I see Ms Coply smiling, saying, “you FINALLY got it!” Scary!
Hey Scott,
Your site pulled up fine on my work laptop with XP that runs IE6. I have a vista machine running IE 7 or 8 that I could test it on later. If you give me details of your error I might be able to help you.
Love the comic, keep up the good work!
Love this page best! Haha!
About the IE.. I don’t know I don’t use IE as a rule because it tries my patience. It allows things I tell it not to. It had issues with flash. I recommend everyone getting firefox and making it a default browser. Life is easier that way.
I dunno Scott,
How is Alex gonna become a permanent residential king of Dreamland unless he enters an extended coma. About the lockup, I couldn’t say. I have Microsoft XP with IE8, everything works fine, works with Opera also. Don’t know about Safari, but Firefox is trash. I couldn’t list all the problems it causes. Sorta like having both McAffee and Norton. McAffee is better and everything Norton or Semantic had to be purged from memory and registry.
Looks like Alex has some growing up to do and Nastajia has her hands full. Is this the longest Alex has ever been constantly asleep?
Good Morning all!
Thank you so much for the feedback.
I was getting the “operation aborted” thing and many other problems.
But today…the ad server that was giving me problems pulled their ads…sigh.
So we’ll see if that fixes it.
As for everything else…boy just WAIT till tomorrow’s update. Nastajia lets him have it.
๐
From KitsuneWolf85: “But if I try to move to a different site altogether, itรขโฌโขll load forever, and when I close out the page, I get a message saying the site is busy, am I sure I want to close it out?”
This same thing is happening to me in IE7. Page appears to load fine, but then the tab freezes up when I try to move on to a different site. I have to close it and open a new tab to try again, and then it works fine. It seems to me like it’s something that only happens the first time I try it upon opening IE, but then again, I keep my webcomics tab open as long as I have the browser open, so I haven’t really tried it over and over. …In short, I may have to agree with whoever above that it may have to do with flash or something.
Wow. Okay. Three strips from happy loving couple to a big fight. Also, I’m leaning more and more toward the idea that Dan’s somehow gonna end up as King…
IE8 working ok here.
Ok on Google Chrome too version 2.0.172.31
And Alex, seriously man, don’t ever ask, they hate that. There is no armor made that can save him now.
Her knees look GREAT!
And his line is pretty funny, but I have been broken up with for less.
prediction: Alex’s armor is proved to be nowhere as strong as it looks
While i understand that Nasj is trying to make him relise the important tasks he has ahead of him, i think she needs to learn to chill. sure hes a lil slow but they were haveing a moment. and she killed it. shes a moment killer/ also how can his brother be a good king if he has never experinced dreamland
I don’t think she’s being bossy. This is her Home, she’s of noble birth, and expected to make decisions, and act in the best interest of other’s futures. She might see him as lazy, and not wanting to take responsibility, which she might see as dangerous to her people.
Right now he’s playing the part of the accidently hero, someone being drug into this, and she might want to see if he’s serious, or if he’s just a flake. In this situation I can understand. Now the ring talk is just silly, and he’s crazy.
I agree with some of the people on here who say that Alex is getting more and more unlikable. I mean, it’s one thing to have a character who’s a bit of an idiot. It adds comedy. But I feel like lately I just want to punch him in the face every comic.
I would just not use IE unless you absolutely have to. My husband and I refer to it as internet exploiter, it’s a POS. I use firefox the only time I have problems with it is when i go to my parents house. Can’t wait for tomorrow’s comic
Wow, deja vu… I swear I had this EXACT conversation with my boyfriend last night! LOL! (Well, minus the whole “king” thing…)
get google chrome, it really IS the best.
N-no no, Alex! Wrong answer! Duck! Imminent Slap Approaching!
Scott, I think IE recently updated and the folks not having problems may have the newer versions, (IE6 and up). I seem to remember the older versions had a big problem with anything flash, and your ads (that got pulled) may have used flash for animations. That might be why some had problems with IE but others didn’t. Hope that helps…
I have been having problems with this site for the past couple of weeks or so. It seems to occur most often when I try to page back to ‘Previous’ comics. That’s when I get the errors and the page closes.
See what happens when you start making assumptions and not check them out? Gotta laugh at Alex. But Nastajia is not free of blame; she’s the one getting directive with him, taking their relationship to a new level.
And who could blame her? She just wants a competent next king of Dreamland–and they’ll need one after Nicodemus is taken care of.
I agree with Xenoth…. I was smoking pot on a daily basis at age 20 and even I was never *this* stupid. Man up or go home, Alex.
In other news: I’m running IE 7 and having no problems.
I hope that Kiwi has some juju advice up her sleeve. Alex is going to need some of that fairy magic to fix this one!
Somehow, I picture a slap being much cooler coming from an elven princess.
I use IE. Tried Firefox for a while and NEVER AGAIN! Incidentally, I’m not having any problems.
As for this scene, it’s a typical male/female miscommunication. Anyone see the movie ‘The Bachelor’? Any talk of the ‘future’ makes a guy freeze. My prediction, according to the laws of literature, is that a major event will happen that will completely rearrange his priorities, possibly the injury of someone close to him. He got a small taste of that with Felicity. Now it’s going to happen to Nastajia, or maybe even Dan. That will mature him almost instantly, preparing him for his rule.
Oooo, Alex is toast…burnt toast!
You know, I don’t think I’d be able to argue with Staj as long as she was dressed like that. The best I could manage would be sort of a “Yes, dear…”
So I admire his ability to stand up to her at all.
I know you work damn hard on this Scott, so PLEASE don’t think I’m seriously suggesting this as it would mean even more work, but pages like this almost make me wish it had a MGS style ‘alternate dialogue’ setting for certain pages like this one, so you can see what characters are thinking as well as saying. The last panel would have Nastajia thinking something like “Oh boy, the PAIN I’m gonna make you FEEL NOW…! O_O’
Awesome segment either way, chomping at the bit for tomorrow’s next installment. ๐
LOL! You guys are awesome.
I absolutely LOVE reading your comments.
It’s weird since I know what happens next. But it’s also amazing that you guys can really get what these characters are feeling.
Sympathy from both sides. I love it.
Tomorrow has hitting. I promise.
๐
Oh dear. Somethings coming and it ain’t pretty for Alex! I hope he has ear plugs and aspirin handy, cause Nastajia going to blow!!!!!!
I think Alex is just being a normal boy. He’s barely 20, remember. He’s just finishing up maturing. Even though it’s kinda hard to believe. Alex reminds me of my brother, who’s also clueless and silly. I think he would give this same response if he didn’t go “Huh? What?” first!
I run IE7. I have run into the browser problems. I don’t even remember when they started. I’d be going through all my favorites links to my daily webcomics and when trying to load your page, I will either immediately get an error message in IE that when I click OK, then goes to a “page cannot be displayed” message. I can’t reload. I have to close IE and click my favorites link again to get it to load. Some days it will load fine, but when I try to navigate away, the next site will seemingly take forever to load. If I try to close IE7, I will get an error box telling me the site is busy. I click OK and IE7 errors out. When I relaunch and try to go to the link I was trying to get to, it works fine.
I thought it was just me, so I hadn’t said anything.

(Personally, I think it might be one of the ads.)
Ooooo, Alex man. Way to shoot yourself in the foot.
She’s trying to have him focus on the task at hand, and he thinks she’s talking about “them”. Guys and gals really do run on two different levels.
But I must agree with what some others have said. I’m 24 now and I still don’t know what I’m going to do with my life. Things just happen and I go with the flow. But then, I don’t have the kinds of responsibilities that Alex has. He does need to take this dreamworld more seriously, as he’s supposed to be its hero. But I think it’ll be more Dan and the “real” world that will put things in perspective. Staj has got the ball rolling, I’m hoping Dan can make a goal!
> Anyone using IE having trouble with my website?
Anyone using IE is having trouble in the first place, in my opinion… ๐
About Alex and “plans [&] desires”:
This is not something you can just “make up your mind” about, or “decide”.
Even if you think it through really really well, weigh the pros and cons, set up goals, subgoals, and find the “motivators” to keep you on the right track, you will hate it every day. Every day you will wonder if you are doing the right thing, wonder what will happen if/when you fail, and after a while, when you realize that you will never be any good at what you have set your mind on doing, and STILL keep doing it, you are going to feel like sh*t about it.
I guess it feels like being gay and deciding to deny it and live a straight life (for religious reasons, for example). It will eat your soul out.
It has to come from the inside, and only about 3 % of all people have such an inner desire.
(These people are however EXTREMELY successful in life!)
I would be interested in how you tackled the questions and doubts above, Scott – please PM me on the forum or write in my thread!
I use IE and I’ve never had any problems. ๐
Wow… I believe everyone’s inner robot started screaming “Danger Will Robinson!”
HA! Classic Venus vs Mars stuff!! Don’t worry Alex, I too often say the wrong things to my lady as well… she usually forgives me eventually LOL
by the way people VOTE!!! dreamland is only 14th and I know we can get it to #1
http://topwebcomics.com/vote/4274/default.aspx
Uh-Oh……I believe Alex just ate his feet.
I seem to remember my girlfriend ranting this same rant to me once. Of course, the difference is that I did have goals and motivations. I did, however, also get a strange nagging feeling she was talking about “us,” and whether or not Nastajia admits it (even to herself), she is.
I’d take a clueless devoted guy, over a party animal womanizer type anyday. (But woof… that was pretty clueless, Alex. -_-)
Well, I don’t know what to tell you about the error. I haven’t seen any problems in IE (though I mostly work with Firefox).
I did look at your coding for the site and I have to say, 158 errors and 18 warnings >_< I’ve seen a lot worse but meh. Hopefully the issue was the ad system.
ok now would be a good time to wake up for alex but then again without the sword he would have got no option to turn back wich may be for the better because now I think he had higher survival chances as his younger self against nicodemus then now
And the next morning Daniel will wonder why Alex woke up with missing teeth and an arrow shot at his shoulder…
As a 20-year-old girl in college, I can tell you that Alex seems pretty normal to me for a 20-year-old college boy.
Now, if Alex worked for a living instead of being a college kid, or had some kind of responsibility in his life, that would have gone way better.
That beign said, I think Alex is going to wake up wondering how she managed to kick him in the jewels and he felt it as though the armor was not there…. with Natasha limping off and cursing.
I say its time for Alex to wake up.
I like Alex. I really do, but honestly, after not only missing the point entirely, but treating their relationship like some step in a DIY page (Hmmm insert elven finger ‘N’ into gold ring ‘W’), he really deserves what’s coming.
Lol Alexander.
Woah Alex, woah! She was talking about the king thing not a ring! Though if you get technical King and Ring……..sort of rhyme a bit or could be interperted into each other blah blah……
IE is working just fine for me here so I dunno what to tell you.
Maybe send Nastajia after the bugs?
Michelle
he is soooo getting slapped, isn’t he?
Scott, as a Christian, how do you feel about promoting/advertising for other comics that glorify things the Bible states are sins?
Ummm…I don’t think that was the right thing to say…
O,O
The Alex/Nastajia trouble reminds me of several of L.E.Modesitt, Jr.’s characters (male) who get into trouble for assuming things about young women they feel responsible for and making arrangements for them rather than asking…
He is so very sad.
ha oh dear
Surreal? This?
This is the least surreal interaction I’ve seen so far.
An onrunning theme of character interactions thus far in this comic is that everyone seems to obscenely overreact to the slightest little thing…
But this little bit? Well, it makes sense. It is quite common not to really know what you want to do even at age 20, especially for slackers like Alex. And you wouldn’t want him to be dishonest about it, would you?
Felicity, quick! Now’s your chance!
Seconded. I want so badly to smack him. I understand that he’s only 20, and all that may come with that in terms of immaturity and irresponsibility, but this re-direct was very bad form. He’s stuck his foot so far into his mouth, he’ll end up sitting on his toes.
Thirded
I love Alex so much, he really bucks the norm and is an honest, genuine Hero. It’s such a contrast to see everyone around him school him about how he needs to deiced his worldly prospects and overlook the fact that he’s willing to defend, support and look after others.
Sure, maybe he doesn’t fully understand himself, but there’s grace for that, being a good person come first. I think his view on life, challenges Nastajia’s that’s why she’s like this.
