Page 873…
Wow. That was a fast week.
Wasn’t it?
Feathers stuck in Centaur butts. Paddington farting. And so much more.
What an exciting week!
🙂
It’s good to be back.
Also…the podcast I did with Gutter Talk is up.
Check it out. Some swear words…but nothing horrible. It IS Gutter Talk after all.
The boys are done with Kindergarten. Today is their first day of their first summer vacation. Ever!
We made it through Kindergarten (Donna and I..not the kids) and we’re so proud of our boys.
Oh well. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. And thank you for reading along this week.
Scott
When I read your description I went and looked at yesterday’s comments again.
Ohmigoodness, you would not BELIEVE how hard I laughed.
I sure hope Kiwi clears out of the way before Paddington stands up too fast… that might hurt.
Also, congratulations on your boys getting out of Kindergarten! Best of luck in Grade 1!
It kinda looks like Paddington just ate Kiwi there in that last panel. I don’t know if that’s what you were actually going for, Scott, but that’s what it looks like.
“Sorry, Kiwi?” Question mark?
You know in the last strip I thought the ‘RIPPPP’ sound effect was Paddington farting. and I bet that’s just what I was supposed to think wasn’t it 😉
So Paddington regularly eats trees? Is that his diet? Kiwi does not seem surprised he is ripping up trees and eating them.
I’ll agree with Cypress. Thought Kiwi was eaten for a moment there.
Also, grats on getting through Kindergarten. Makes me want kids…
I needed a laugh then somehow I got here from Bearnuts.
Now I’ve spent over 5 hours reading every page, at work (after work of course).
There’s been no-one here for nearly 4hrs
I’ve had no dinner
It’s 9:30pm
I’ve missed the last bus
It’s raining torrents
I have to walk home, it takes an hour.
I’ll be getting up at 5am tomorrow morning, Saturday
And you know what?
There’s nothing happier than a Kookaburra in the rain.
😀
Every single detail is absolutely exquisite.
You’re added to my favourites, definately one of the top three. I’ve forwarded an email to all my friends
All that, and I’ll be next door to the bookshop tomorrow. 😉
I’m in total awe of your work, your work ethic and what you’ve achieved so far, even more so knowing you’ve kept it going through computer failures, internet hacks, sickness, injury and kids. Marriages have failed for less, and you’ve got that too.
Did I was in awe? It sounds understated when I say it. Yep.
My endorsment is total and know I’ll be reading till the end.
Thankyou for sharing.
Kookaburra8su (aka Shawn.)
Oh yeah…
PS. I agree with the others, I thought she’d been eaten too. We can’t actually see her!
Hope you don’t mind a suggestion from a newbe.
As I’m sure it’s more a matter of keeping to scale, and renders can take a while, try photoshopping Kiwi a bit more glow, then we know where she is.
Beside that, I’ll say it again, AWESOME WORK!
This has been a crazy week hasn’t it? lol! Ahh, the tangents we’ve gone off on, too darn funny. ^_^
I agree with Nardil. There’s something off about Paddington’s response to Kiwi. Maybe add a period after “sorry” or move his acknowlegdement of Kiwi to the next panel? Sorry.. that’s the English degree coming out. lol!
Just wanted to say how much I love this comic! Really great!
Poor Paddington, he’s gone and ate Kiwi without even realizing it! 🙂
It’s her fault for having an appetizing name. 😛
Ok. I have some work to do.
No question mark. Make Kiwi easier to see in the panels.
Check.
Thanks guys.
And welcome Kookaburra8su
Thank you so much for the kind words.
I haven’t had a chance to fix the previous pages. But might leave them like that for everyone’s enjoyment. And just fix them for the print book.
🙂
lol Scoot you totally should!! oh oops i put ‘scoot’ not ‘scott’ sorry!! ^^; and i hope you don’t have too much troubles with the boys bbeing on thier first summer vacation! ohh will they enjoy it when they are in high school and middle school!! xD and thats comming from a gradutating senior in a week! ohh i can’t wait!!
It took some closer examination, so Kiwi flies back off-panel after she makes the comment, if I’m not mistaken
What a good friend Paddington is, not letting the tree digest before moving to help Kiwi.
Scott, you gotta leave the riip in! Just my vote.
Now I have to go back outside and keep trying to miss the ground.
Paddington is so courteous. A rock gentleman…
Paddington’s fingers are so awesomely HUGE.
If you do decide to change some of the previous pages and remove their comedic value, I would suggest putting up a link to the original page, as you have done in the past. That way, it’s the best of both worlds. I think it would be hilarious if you could find some way to work those panels into one of the books, as bloopers, or something like that (probably with dialogue changed to acknowledge or crack fun at the feather and the fart). I don’t know if that’s doable or not, but it could be fun.
They finished kindergarten just about the same time I finish college. o.o;
Hmmm, nothing of note for me to say. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a normal weekend for me. 🙁
I’ve been reading this comic since the first (five page) update. For various reasons I find myself without long-term access to the internet for extended periods of time, so it’s always a treat to come back and get an update on Alex and friends.
I’m glad to see the story arcing so smoothly, despite the obvious difficulties of working on the comic while enduring physical therapy and most likely mind-altering pain medication. I’m watching my father on the long road to recovery after a devestating injury, and it’s inspiring to see you back in the swing of things.
I’ve been experimenting with rendering software since I first started grasping the concept of geometry, so it’s great to see such attention to detail (especially lighting!) in your work. I’m running on a 1920 x 1080 (1080p) display, and I’m forced to zoom in a bit to get all the detail out of your comic, but it’s great to see all the detail is there when I do zoom in.
I wanted to mention, I can see Kiwi’s silhouette no problem, and with the backlighting this seems the obvious way to go. But, she does generate her own light, and although the source is from her body model outward, wouldn’t the ambient light be enough contrast to allow her some color detail despite the “sun’s” position? Just a thought.
Also, with newer monitors and graphics cards becoming more and more affordable, there’s an ever-growing audience base with standard resolutions of 1680 x 1050 or even 1920 x 1080/1200/1440. I mention this because it would be a real treat to see these new resolutions taken advantage of, and Dreamland in HD (as it were) just sounds cool. Admitedly, this is just me being a glutton for more detail, but I implore you to consider the rendering time vs. the potential increase in detail.
I’m not sure if you’re scaling down to display these online, but I would assume you are, which means you’re probably already rendering these panels at high-res (Page 829 suggests you render these at 1024×768 per panel). Maybe it would just be a matter of posting the larger versions? I suppose bandwidth / server space would become an issue? Just starting the argument, if there will be one.
As always, great comic! I can’t wait to read more of Chapter 14!
Hey Tuxxyy…
Yes. I’m downscaling.
My render size for print is 2806×4208.
So going high def wouldn’t be a problem.
I’m honestly just not sure if the audience would be there just yet.
Maybe I should run a poll or something?
Do a higher res version for “subscribers” ?
Thoughts?
And thanks for the kind words.
Well you’d definitely have one subscriber right away! 🙂 I figured you were rendering big but 2806×4208 is drool-worthy.
Imagine the thrill when a webcomic goes HD! Your name in lights! Another copy of Spiderman #3!!!! … Ok I exaggerate — probably.
Are you running a web tracker? (like statcounter)? I noticed from my experience that most of my site visitors are at least at 1280 x 1024, but I maintain industrial sales sites, so I’m not sure how much that affects the stats.
I think a poll would be a great non-invasive way of feeling out the potential for an increased user experience. Then again the response could be a resounding “no” from the general audience, in which case something for subscribers would be awesome (maybe a ‘suggested donation’ deal?)
Those totally look like legs and feet hanging out of his mouth.
You know, aside from the comic itself, having a nearly-daily log of what’s going on in your life is great thing to leave for your kids. Almost like a diary on here. They’ll go back and read through these in 10, 20, or 30 years, and have this window into how your life is now. Quite the treasure you’re leaving for them.
