Sound Effects…
Sometimes they work…sometimes they don’t.
I wanted the last panel to have the sound of the dwarves advancing. Drawing weapons. Etc.
I hope it works.

actually your choice of effects made me thing that they were standing down or somesuch.
Keep up the good work
It might have worked better at a different angle and showing the dwarves stepping forward, drawing their weapons rather than resorting to written sound effects.
Still, I love this comic and check it daily. Great job!
Where did her bow go?
Yeah, I thought they saw the sword, recognized it, and were backing off….
I kinda thought the floor was cracking under them or something… ^_^;
Just found the comic tonight and read the whole thing- At first I was a bit trepidatious about the style but it grabbed me and I couldn’t stop. The years went by fast yet I am still amazed at how often you updated the comic and it’s still going so strong.
In essence: Thanks.
Hmm, I’d say it’s it need less effects in that last panel Scott and a different angle. As someone who works with typography all day I know how tricky it can be though and appreciate what you were trying to do. I think I would have gotten it eventually though even without your explanation. 😉
Case in point Scott, check out that big fat typo in my post above!!! Sheesh, and I even mentioned that I work in typography, no excuses!!! 😛
I got it, but it wasn’t obvious. More weapons in the panel, or altering the third panel so that rather than a close up we see one lead dwarf, and Nat and Alex, then panel 4 they’re closer, and they all have weapons…
Hehe, the “shuffle” made me imagine those goofy dwarves thinking they were so stealthy shuffling in closer to disarm them while they were talking.
The one dwarf with his ax raised high does make it look like they’re advancing. Perhaps a wider view of the dwarves with more of them in very aggressive postures would have given it more of the effect you were intending. I dunno, future reference.
Sorry the sound effects made me think of Pratchett’s creaking Silver horde. And not nearly as menacing as they.
The sound effects don’t work for me *sob*
Sound effects are so tricky–it can be hard to find the right ones! (but you did a pretty good job.) 🙂
hehe, that are dwarfish sounds alright.
Although it sounds more like shaking a bag full of metal
(there isn’t much difference is there? 😛
If that is the sharpest sword in history and can cut through any material, why did she put her hand on the edge of the blade?
Good comic btw, I like the art
I love this comic!!! It is great, amusing, adventurous, and clean. I love it!!!! Thank you for all the great laughs.
Thank you all…
I may redo this panel for the trades. We’ll see.
You guys are so great. I really appreciate all of you.
I was relly hopeing for some action. but i still love this comic
Good sound effects, but I think you could have used a “shink” in there somewhere. Or you could have done like Beaver and Steve and just gone for the full on “unsheathe” as a sound effect. But that would have looked real silly in this comic. 🙂 Thanks for the great comic.
Wow. I don’t know if anyone else notices, but Nastajia’s entire expression in the second panel look almost like a real photograph. Very detailed, I actually did a double take!!
The sound effects gave me the feeling that the dwarves were backing off, putting up weapons and such. A better approach might have been to get an over-the-shoulder shot from the Hero Party’s point of view to make the dwarves seem more hostile/ closing in. If the angle had to be from the side, then 2 successive panels would be needed to show the movement of the dwarves.
It all looks great, though. I love this webcomic! *waves Dreamland Chronicles flag*
First post –
I’m crazy about your comic strip! *waves Dreamland Chronicles flag also*
Yesterday the princess had an arrow nocked on her bow.
Where did the bow and arrow go? The sound effects could have used quite a few Shh Shh Shhinks. I don’t suppose axes make a distinctive sound until you throw them. Subtle movement is hard to portray in a comic unless you can afford to spend a few consecutive frames to compare.
Their chances of fighting their way out were not all that good, and some of them (forgot cat-girl’s name) appear to be unarmed. But if they stand down, they may spend the the rest of their lives in a dwarf dungeon.
Trader Jimm: Agreed. 😀
I don’t hear anything.
I have been reading your stories and they are FANTASTIC! I’m completely hooked! Keep up the excellent work! 🙂
OH COME ON! When did she decide to wuss out. They betrayed her father and she’s just giving up? Kick their behinds! Punt a few field goals! At the very least they’d respect your conviction. She backs down now and all they’ll assume is that she knew what she was doing is wrong! At least if they fight her conviction could cause some doubt! I’m with Alex.
I would have started the sound effects in the prior panel.
Bruce.
works in my opinion! 🙂 – nikki, Israel.
If Alexander is still holding the sword when he wakes up, he will be in a good position to mount a rescue operation.
If he is locked up before he wakes up, then when he returns he is still locked up. 🙁
yeah
ohkay, banaticus, what do you mean…?
oh sorry for posting so much, im currently testing gravatar. :))
Dwarve Cha-cha!
I interpreted the last panel as the dwarves shaking their weaponry to demonstrate their superior firepower.
I interpret the whole situation as even if Alex is in invinci-armor he’s surrounded by a mob of angry short men with sharp things or heavy blunt things. He and Paddington could maybe bull rush their way through to some kind of safety, and Kiwi could zip away (if she hasn’t already, as we haven’t seen her in a bit, have we?)
But Felicity? She’d be dead in moments. And Nastajia wouldn’t last much longer…
I think Nastajia knows that the dwarves are misguided, not evil, and she knows how much damage she and her friends could do to them and doesn’t want to hurt them.
LOL I think Paddington should just smash them all. Their weapons probably wouldn’t hurt him ‘cuz he’s a rock.
Umm, yeah. I noticed through that whole page, Nastajia’s hand was on the sword 😮 Ouch!
But the xp… Nastaja… I haven’t levelled up for ages!!! Last time was when I got the upgrade on my armour!
“But we can totally–” “No we can’t.”
i thought thye were already attacking
Nastajia: “No…we can’t. They have a foley artist.”
Dude. So formal. So politely appeasing.
You can talk normal-like with us, y’know?
How amusing it would be if this all turned out to be an illusion, and was just the dwarf king and maybe two others…
