Unless calamari was one of their main exports, in which case the sudden increase in supply would drive down the price, causing economic hardships for the mer-folk. Then Nicodemus would devise the Mer-shall plan to aid the mer people in their recovery, thereby sundering their alliance with the elves.

I was kind of hoping that if Nick hated the sword, it was because it banished evil, and so the kraken would vanish with a blinding flash of light.
