I know that when I see a giant monster blocking the only exit out of an underwater cave, the first thing that I wonder is if it can talk and think. Duuuuh.
Whether it is self-aware or not probably isn’t the deciding factor in whether or not one might communicate with it.
There are plenty of other HUMANS one cannot meaningfully communicate with, often even if they speak what is basically the same language.
