    Wasn’t there a waterfall near where they went in? Perhaps there were significant variations in the currents in that area.

    I never liked how mermaids are supposed to be half-fish, but their tails are horizontal. Only whales, dolphins, and other such sea mammals have horizontal tails, and they’re not fish.
