He is a fictional character, so is he suggesting that his dreams exist outside the realm of fiction? Or is he suggesting that they exist within the same realm of fiction as himself, thus real to him but not to us? And in that case, how would even regular dreams be described as anything other than real when considered from the perspective of characters within those dreams? Can even fiction within fiction be real unto itself?
So often that word is thrown around, yet never is it defined. The most one can expect are equally meaningless synonyms.
