Is it the truth? How can you prove Alex is a person (at the moment he’s actually a pixel image)? YOU interpret people around you. We could all be wild boars or platypuses for all you know. We could be brains in vats.
Problem with “no absolutes” rule. The rule defy’s itself by being an absolute truth which makes it existance a logical contradiction.
You are still imposing a reality by saying there is none. You are imposing it on those of us who think there is an objective reality. It’s really a very arrogant stance ….
However, dreaming is one of those altered, subjective states of consciousness. Think about how Alex forgot how to fly, and Kiwi’s explanation of how it’s done. He has to believe he can – that’s a subjective reality that depends upon the dreamer’s state of mind. It’s a limited form of magic-use, which when you get down to brass tacks is a method of altering reality to suit your perception of it.
Dan: “If I interpret you as a four foot tall, 300 pound hippo, does that make it so?”
Alex: “No.”
Dan: “Of course not! I can’t just interpret you that way…I would have to install a new wireframe and texture set!”
What is sillier, Dan?
Open interpretation or assuming that a bunch of superstitious idiots got it bang-on correct first time through uneducated guess-work and flights of fancy?
I would respectfully disagree. if Dan interprets Alex as a hippo, then Alex is a hippo in Dan’s *perception* of reality. It’s true that, subjectively, our individual perception is (for all practical purposes) the same as our individual Reality, but the concept of Reality is laden with connotations of objectivity.
The tricky bit comes in proving what *is* Reality. If nine out of ten people agree, after careful examination, consideration and debate, that a particular four-legged furry creature that barks and wags its tail is a dog, then they can (and usually do) ignore the tenth person who says it’s a duck. Does this indicate that this is a dog in Reality, or is this mass subjective perception that has been accepted by consensus as “reality”?
Enough out of me, I’ve got to go; my dog is quacking to go out.
Actually, if he interprets him as a hippo then Alexander IS a hippo in Daniel’s reality….
Bull. Alexander is not a hippo, he’s a person. That is the truth. Enough with this relativistic nonsense. There are SOME things that are absolute.
Ye
Exactly what the other person said. Whatever he/she/it said.
Oh, so looking for the truth is a bad thing now.
your so funny Tim. all you say is ye in every comic you reply in. lol
He’s not a person. He’s a representational group of pixels used to convey a character in this story.
Dear God!!!! Soylent Green is made from representational groups of pixels used to convey characters in this story!!!!!
So, supposedly we accept Alex is a hippo, then won’t we need a different definion for actual hippos, since they so obviously differ from Alexander?
Reality is an illusion, buddha and Krishna told me so 😛
Barbie Doll Teeth!!! no offense, teeth are probably a bit difficult to computer generate to look as they do in a real person’s mouth.
Well if Dan convinced himself that Alex is a hippo, then at least in his mind Alex is a hippo. The brain works weirdly.
Diyedas- very aptly stated, “…in his mind.” Hence, my point on the last page or two ago.

I don’t think anyone is saying that…
What if… What if hippos – ARE – people?
Think about it.

Not if this was a philosophical debate website:)

No. If DAN interprets Alex as a hippo, it makes Alexa a hippo from DAN’S perspective. It has no bearing on our perception if we don’t want it to.
I declare shenanigans on your claim.
Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

… Moron. -_-;
yup excactly 😀
*pulls microscope from base and places lens against screen*
I swear there’s a set of Feist’s Riftwar Saga on that middle shelf on the left in that first panel…
And Alex’s scar is talking in the second panel…
*finally notices the stares from the other readers*
I’ll shut up now and go back to the comic…

Alex: Now you sound like Nicole.
Daniel: that’s because I am Nicole!
I think at one point one or two characters do jump off of a tower, but they don’t land in hay.
