eeeh… Methinks all the other english speaking countries agree with that spelling, specially because it comes from two greek words and is a very technical (and recent) word in our vocabulary, hence, less given to changes as the language evolves.
I don’t personally dig using the “z” all over the place. I spell the word “lobotomised”, and stick by that spelling. It is less about being correct and more about giving the V-sign to the yanks.

It’s not a sweatshirt, it’s the top half of a fat suit that’s been painted green. It is pretty warm, though.
In American English, words like that are often spelled with a “Z”, like “synthesized”.
