GAWD DAMM THAT IS FREAKING COLD!!!
THAT IS YOUR BROTHER AND HE IS LITERALLY BEING CHOKED TO DEATH!!!!
TO DDEEAATTHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the first time I am legitimately annoyed with Alex.
I don’t think Alex knows about the Nightmare Realm beast in their home, choking the sleeping Dan. He might have thought that Gilgamesh is using some power to choke Dan’s dream form, as he didn’t know how “invincible” Dan was, and Alex’s dream form took multiple beatings.
So I don’t think it is so much him being cold as realizing, “No, Dan can’t answer why Gilgamesh thinks I should know about him, because he can’t speak, period.” He clearly cares about his brother’s well-being, as he ran toward Gilgamesh to protect Dan.
Nah, I think this is just that beat before it Dawns on Alex that… “Waitaminute! My Brother is choking!”, and had we skipped it and gone STRAIGHT to the next reaction, things wouldn’t pace properly…
At least, that’s what I’m thinking.
I know I shouldn’t say it, but this is funny. Alex, the ever clueless. I can just picture him saying,”Okay, guess you’ll just have to tell me. So, who are you again?”
Keep in mind the time differential between Earth and Dreamland. Several minutes have passed in the latter; almost no time on Earth. That’s why Dan is still alive. Choking, but alive. Gil may be having the beastie prolong things by not squeezing too tight – which would be in line with how foolish he’s been being all along – but it’s unclear anyone will come to Earth Dan’s aid in time.
Suck it up ya big baby, I died earlier today, it wasn’t so bad.
seriously though, I would feel a lot better about this page if Alex had any clue about what’s going on. he doesn’t even know WHY Dan is choking. He doesn’t know anything from after he went through the portal.
(Also, still rooting for mom to save Dan)
Someone else commented that this might be the beat before Alex puts two and two together about Dan’s condition, and we’ll get the reaction on the next page…and I have to admit that this does seem to fit what we know about him. Even if he doesn’t panic in the next page, we might get the explanation for why there’s not much concern in his comment (though I’ll admit that it would be odd for Alex to have no concern and a good reason for it…as you pointed out, there’s no way he’d have any clue what’s going on since Dan came back to Dreamland well after Alex left Earth).
For the time being, I’m going to suspend my judgment of Alex in favor of “reading one page at a time can mess up the flow/pacing of dialogue”…but it’s hard not to be a little annoyed at him, even if this was a little funny.
I hope you’re right. Otherwise, Alex comes off as oddly emotionally detached. Odd enough for anyone who’s sibling is being strangled to death right before their eyes and especially odd for Alex who’s biggest strength is his passion.
“Still” choking? I don’t think Alex knew Dan was choking before…
(Dan, if you can move, you can save yourself. Crawl up to Gil as if you’re going to beg… and then hit him with all the force your mind that can kick serious butt can generate. If he dies I bet Adaddon will fall apart, and the beastie will stop strangling you. That might be better than laying there hoping someone does something…)
The sad thing is that Alex really can’t do anything. It’s not like he can wake up and go save Dan. I doubt that he can beat Gil fast enough not to kill Dan either…. Getting emotional will get him nowhere, he needs a cool head if he doesn’t want to die either. It’s understandable that he doesn’t know who Gil is, but maybe that will fill Gil with such blind rage that Alex can have the upper hand.
Since as someone pointed out Alex doesn’t know about what’s going on with Earth, it’s quite probable he assumed Gil (who had Dan in his grasp) was choking Dan, and that Dan would be free of choking when Gil dropped him. And if he did assume it was Gil, recognizing that Dan is still choking is not immediately the same as recognizing that Dan is still dying. A person who was being choked is likely to gasp, wheeze, and continue having trouble breathing for a period of time after they’re released from choking. So the situation would not be as obvious as it is to us with full knowledge of all parts of the situation.
Page 2068 Dan was being actively choked by G. Flip back to 2073 – Alex realizes that G isn’t touching Dan, but he is still being choked. Next page Alex should do the math. I think it is just an issue of having only one page at a time.
Well, what can Alex do? His entire physical form is in Dreamland. It’s not like he can wake up and go rescue him.
I read that as him accepting that the situation was occurring and him understanding that there was nothing he could ‘literally’ do to fix the situation. He could yell and scream but that would feed Gil’s ego.
Besides, we don’t see Alex’s face. The “Oh.” start of his last comment may be tinged with sadness, we have no way to know other than the context eacj individual reader applies.
obviously he is still choking. But now even I am getting concerned about Dan. Can’t his mom or girlfriend hurry up and get home already?

Actually, he’s keeping his cool rather well at the moment.
He’s not even going in all half cocked and screaming about needing to do something.
He knows that is all out of his hands.
So he’s keeping his focus on the real threat that he MIGHT be able to deal with. Or maybe keep distracted.
I’d actually be very disappointed in Alex if he went blubbering off into hysterics right now. Calm is what is required now.

Agree with this – Dan is obviously not well, even falling down.
So reacting with a seeminly quiet “oh still choking” is out-of-place.
It should be an angry shout “what are you doing to my bro?” or a worrying question “Dan, you OK?” if he still does not understand the urgency.
Previous page was excellently funy, though 🙂

Better get on the ball there Alex!
What was your first clue Alex?
Give Captain Obvious here a cape!

he doesn’t have to be in hysterics, but he could at least be a little perturbed his brother is dying in front of him.

I guess Gil is having Dan merely choked to death so he can gloat. The nightmare beast is probably strong enough to snap Dan’s neck.
Oh, you’re doing pantomimes. Let’s see. Okay, 5 syllables. First syllable sounds like choke? He’s joking? No, that’s only two syllables…. Hmm.
Yeah…I kind of agree. I mean, there’s a measure of humor in Alex’s response, and I can appreciate that, but it does seem odd that his response is so blasé.
Fair enough. This could very well fall into the “down sides of having only one page a day to read.”
