Call me crazy, but Nic actually makes a fair comment in the first panel. What would prevent Gilgamesh from not still invading and searching for the plant? Regardless of what Dan does? Dan better have a good hiding place for the plant – and convince Gilgamesh that the plant is truly well hidden from him. This may not be easy.
If Gilgamesh rejects Daniel’s offer for peace, then the true king of Dreamland will have be a good leader and rally the races he rules to oppose the first king.
Dan has so far shown an excellent grasp of military tactics, and considerable skill at diplomacy. I can’t imagine he isn’t aware of the dangers of making a pact with Gilgamesh, and has made provision for them. We’ll have to see.
It’s worth considering that Dan doesn’t know the wheels are coming off Gil’s little red wagon elsewhere. Alex has destroyed 1/2 his army and invaded the Nightmare Realm; Merlin’s tree is still beyond his power to harm; and neither of them know Felicity may have woken up the arch-mage. If Gil were smart he’d take the deal right now, while he can. If he were smart…
you are not crazy at all. I agree with Dan they should try for peace first, but Nic, having been around for this kind of thing for a long time, does make a fair point that Gilgamesh isn’t exactly trustworthy. I would say shoot for peace but don’t be complacent. Especially when you start thinking generations down the line.
Fully agree with Dan here.
I had a T-shirt in the army (for sport) where the following sentence was written: “If WAR is the answer, than the question must be f*** stupid!”.
The question remain: what terms are acceptable, you cannot accept anything. But peace should be the first option. Now in this case: what would he gain from the plant? Proabbly not needing the suffering kids to get the energy to stay alive. But it is not like giving a weapon that would entail large obvious risks of loosing a follow-up war.
Nic has shown a surprising amount of respect for Dan as king in the past. I wonder how he will respond to this assertion. Will he roll his eyes at the naiveté, or will he respect Dan’s desire to avoid war if possible?
Hey! Where’s Nic’s scar? Over his eye? Or am I thinking of the wrong eye?
Nope, Nevermind, I always forget that he’s mirror imaged in the background, and that scar *IS* over the other eye…

Yeah, Dan is being a bit of a starry-eyed idealist here. And we know what happens to those.
Ah I think you don’t give Dan enough credit – he will have backup plans to fall on. Lots. 😉
Always? Only the Sith deal in absolutes. … waaaaait …
They don’t last long…!
Not to mention two of his vassals and a girlfriend sent right into the Swarm’s claws just to add a tiny and totally unnecessary bit of drama.
Acting in character, though. Just like a real king.

To quote an Old adage “You want peace? Prepare for War”

Nick wanted a king he could discuss things with rather then use him as a punching bag. This is what you get.
Don’t trussst the humanssss! The leaf is poisoned! Itsss a trap!
All we are saying … is give peace a chance. (great words from John Lennon).
So future kings will be keepers of the plant, I guess. Provided Dan goes through with this plan.
And how many lives must be lost by making a naive attempt at peace that Gilgamesh will agree to and then immediately throw out the window?
Also, peace was the first, second, and third option. We’re on Option like 17 here.
Uh-oh, a pacifist… 😉
