Alex doesn’t have super-strength on Earth, and Niviene isn’t a lightweight. I’m not sure he could heave her up and out, especially quickly. And Abaddon is really close.
Jumping into the Portal, on the other hand, as long as she had quickness of wit enough to do the adaption spell and kiss him before he drowned, might work.
From the drama of the moment and the layout of panel 3, I have the feeling that ~something~ will happen when Alex touches the sheath! It has magical properties, after all, and Alex has used Excalibur for a while, so there may be some resonance left in him.
Then they could have the fun of being torn apart together. How romantic! 😀
Now if Alex and Nastajia’s parents all pulled together, and the resulting explosion only wiped out those parts of Abbadon about to grab her (rather than half of Dreamworld), then they’d have… well, not an ideal outcome, but the best possible one.
Plus the requirement to do a hast fireman’s lift and carry to get her into a bathtub?
Yeah. That look has “this might be my only chance” written all over it.
My prediction:
*** WARNING POSSIBLE SPOILERS ***
Alex jumps in with Excalibur and starts fending off Abbadon while being berated by Niviene for his foolishness. Just when things look like he’s about to be overwhelmed, a surprise attack by Bognac (I probably remembered that name wrong), Kiwi and company sends Abbadon whimpering away.
Alex’s dream self is almost unbearable in Dreamland. We saw that when he was taking on Abaddon. He seems to instinctually understand what Dan has figured out: As long as he’s convinced he can’t lose, he can’t. Now, whether his super abilities will manifest in his real body if he enters Dreamland or not is uncertain. But if they do…
I am afraid the allies up on the dwarven flying boat cannot help, as they do not have merfolk to transform them so they cannot breathe underwater as the nightmare creatures apparently can. It is possible and Oberon and Titania will jointly make the decision to step in and pull Niviene through the portal as soon as Alex takes hold of the sheath. As King and Queen of the Elves they are certainly strong enough, and they have the authority to make that call. They may feel that the portal needs to be destabilized to prevent Abbadon from using it, hopefully destroying the nightmare force in the process and saving Niviene as well.
Actually, because she is in water, she would be easy to pull her up most of the way, and once she realized, she would realize she doesn’t have time to fight it, so she should be able to flick her tail once and spring out.
She is prepared to die to keep those items away from Abbadon.
I do not believe Alex is prepared to LET her die.
Whether he pulls her out or dives in, his heart is telling him to save her and he has never been one who will follow logic when his heart leads in a different way.
He will try to save her, even if it threatens everything she is working for.
Because he simply refuses to believe that trying to save someone who doesn’t deserve to die could be the wrong thing to do…
In short…he has a hero complex. And it hasn’t killed him yet…
Now, replace energy with breath, and you are spot on.
What will Alex do? Pull her along with the sheath or jump into the lake himself?
Yep, i was thinking the same thing, grab hold of hand and sheath together then pull.
“Hurry?” this gives me the impression that he’s going too slow in pulling the sheath out. not sure this element of drama is needed here.
After taking the sheath,Niviene is grabbed by the nightmare beasts and dragged under….!
She did admit she has a flair for the dramatic;)
Alex is the slowest person I know. It’s taken him 5 days to grab two items from the water.
LOL

why not just leave her in the lake?
That third panel is NOT making me feel any better about Alex’s sense of urgency.
“What, THIS sheath? The one you’re holding? I should take it now?”
Yeah. That look has “this might be my only chance” written all over it.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that “spoiler warning” 😉
