I still have not completely understood the distinction between Abaddon and the Nightmare Realm, but Abaddon looks like some kind of corporate entity or group consciousness, while the Nightmare Realm may be a geographical or political term.
Agreed, any statement by Abaddon may be deceiving. My guess is that Abaddon depends on The Dreamer for their very existence, but that he is their (sleeping?) hostage and not an active participant in their atrocities.
What happens when Daniel wakes The Dreamer? Will Abaddon cease to exist?
He is speaking through the nightmares beasts, is he dreaming them? Now I need to go read all scenes with Abaddon in them and imagine it`s one person, this Dreamer, speaking. This is interesting.
You are correct. Abaddon is the Borg-like monster entity, and the Nightmare Realm is a geographical area.
Although, now I’m wondering if Abaddon actually is The Dreamer’s name and the monsters have just been using it due to shared consciousness and group-speak.
Is he Abaddon? Truly and literally? Very possibly. In the Hebrew Bible Abaddon is referenced to be a place where people are punished and destroyed, with the general Jewish idea that it is a place of fire and snow…I wouldn’t want to go there.
In the New Testament, Revelation 9:11, Abaddon is described as “Destroyer” the angel of the abyss, and as the king of a plague of locusts resembling horses with crowned human faces, women’s hair, lions’ teeth, wings, iron breast-plates, and a tail with a scorpion’s stinger that torments for five months anyone who does not have the seal of God on their foreheads.
Looking at the Nightmare beasts surrounding Daniel and everybody’s favorite dragon…I can see that description a bit…
And taking this perhaps further than is intended in a children’s story…if Abaddon is truly the lord of the place of destruction, part or all of Gehenna which is the destination of the wicked…
In Western culture the world of the dead in general is named Hell. In Hebrew culture Gehenna was where the wicked went and Sheol was where neutral dead went. We might better understand Sheol as more akin to Hades from Greek mythology.
Then there is Dreamland…first defended and then ruled by a dragon named Nicodemus. In the Bible there is a well known man name Nicodemus. He was a Jewish holy man, one of the leading holy men of the land, and he is famous for talking with Jesus, for trying to moderate the religious backlash against Jesus, and for administering the holy rights to Jesus after the crucifixion. He also wrote the Gospel of Nicodemus according to some traditions, though that along with many other gospels was not included as part of the official Bible when it was assembled by later day councils. Needless to say, Nicodemus is an important part of the Christian tradition. And appears to be on the side of the angels.
Once again…taking things maybe a bit further than is intended…The Nightmare Realm could be a standin for…well…what we consider Hell…while Dreamland is a standin for Heaven. Or perhaps they are both reflections of those places. If so, our favorite dragon could be some form of angel meant to protect Dreamland. While Abaddon is an angel who rebelled long ago who wishes to conquer Dreamland.
Or our intrepid author could have dumpster dived through old religious traditions for names that would fit the story he wanted to tell…;)
Still leaving unanswered how a human could save ‘Heaven’ and earth from death 😉 Also Abbandon is ‘the first human’, and was looking for immortallity.
I also wondered how come Nicodemus didn’t age, same reason as the lady of the lake? Sibu Issahir Amelu?
Oh yes. My dumpster diving through religious texts does not answer every question by any means. Though it does bring up some interesting questions of its own when it comes to what the names mean for this story. 😉
As for the questions you voiced…I could make it work if I were doing it. Say that Abbadon lost his power and immortality by something…let’s call it a “disagreement” with someone capable of taking it away…maybe he is looking for a way to get it back. 😉
As for dear old Niccy? Either he gained immortality on his own, was born with it, or uses something like the Sibu Issahir Amelu to get it. How he became immortal is probably a very interesting story that I hope to find out. 😉
That’s… interesting.
I have a suspicion that Abaddon is lying his furry tail off.
Abaddon has a furry tail? I thought it was more like monstrous tail…

Dan’s next question should be to ask for proof of that
Maybe the Dreamer is dreaming Abaddon. A dream within a dream.
So there IS a connection between the Dreamer and Abaddon……!
I’m waiting for his eyes to open and spook Daniel!!!!
Forgive me if I don’t believe the word of a nightmare.
Yes, how foolish not to know already that the Dreamer always talks about himself in the third person.
text change in the previous page. tricksy tricksy!

Abaddon’s toes are really long. Just sayin’. 😛

On the other hand, maybe Abaddon is dreaming the Dreamer.
