Well, to be honest, no one is “king” or “queen” material. They all started from somewhere. And Dan and Alex both have the ability and the goodness to make great kings.
Given the current situation (especially Alex’s quest and the dangers they’ve encountered) I think Alex is better for king for the time being. Right now they need someone who is good at action rather than philosophy. However, when things settle down, they would need a more thoughtful king. Will Alex be able to make the transition or will Dan be brought in at that stage?
Okay, am I the only person who is feeling really bad for frackin’ Alex right now? Seriously, this is getting ridiculous. He was a bit of a jerk in the beginning, I’ll give him that, but when he discovered he had a responsibility, he did step up to it. Honestly, I feel like half of Alex’s problem is people like his own frackin’ TWIN and all the people around him TELLING him that he is a failure and stupid. Then, because he believes them because why would his own twin LIE to him about that sort of thing, he sees no reason to try and think things through or try at school or anything else. It’s like everyone around him is sabotaging him mentally and emotionally so he can’t help BUT screw up. Mind you, Dan has nearly always annoyed me, since he’s been mildly snivel-y about things that, while Alex did things that were wrong, Dan also completely over-reacted. I’m not saying Alex is perfect, but I am saying that I think some of his flaws come from how everyone around him treats him and expects him to act.
…And right now, I’m wondering if anyone has ever talked to the Sword of Kings about all this garbage the Lady of the Lake (no offense, I’m a King Arthur dork too, part of a society DEDICATED to him and does a chessboard featuring his court and legends every year (I was the false Guinevere this year)) has been throwing around like it’s fact. The sword said Alex was king, and rereading the section of the archives, I didn’t find the evidence to support that the position will change to Dan if he’s allowed entrance into Dreamland. It was rather specific in that ALEX became king when he pulled the sword from King Arthur’s position. It might not accept Alex giving up the throne for Dan to have it, and that’s a pretty important factor to consider.
They’re having a unwisely revealing discussion here. Have they totally forgotten about who ever was laughing in the bushes, or was that laugher ascribed to the two of them?
I completely agree with you, it’s gotten to the point where I don’t chuckle anymore and say ‘Oh that is so right!’ I mean, Alex has done everything he can to help Nastajia find her parents, helped take out Nicodemeus, relearned how to fly with his love for Staj, all kinds of things and then we turn around and get this. I’m sorry, it’s just not funny anymore when folks like his brother want to make fun of Alex or put him down because they think he isn’t good enough and yet when he doesn’t meet their expectations, they want to get angry and harp on his case. Everyone in this comic has flaws, and yet it seems Alex is always the one getting the short end of the stick. I’m sorry, but it’s just not funny anymore like it was in the middle of the comic when Alex was that jockish, jerk lunkhead, he has improved by leaps and bounds.
Though we still don’t know if the sword isn’t reacting to something in particular, or it’s just supposed to glow after awhile of being in the possession of a ‘rightful heir’.
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.
Dennis the Peasant: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis the Peasant: You can’t expect to wield supreme power just ’cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
Scott has clearly stated that if Alex were to give the sword necklace to Dan, then the Sword of Kings would pass to Dan, and Alex would no longer be allowed into Dreamland because giving the necklace to Dan would be the same as abdicating in favor of his brother. His explanation of where this is shown in the comic is Orion’s reaction to learning that Alex had tried to let Nicole sleep with the sword necklace to see if she could see Felicity.
Also, I don’t know what brothers don’t call each other stupid from time to time…and what we’ve seen so far from Dan (as far as calling Alex a “failure” goes) is that he’s only called his brother out for not trying to do well in school. We certainly didn’t see Dan suggest that before seeing that Alex was in danger of failing (which is how the whole comic opens). I don’t think it’s fair to say that Dan is an awful person for acknowledging that his brother isn’t perfect. Heck, I love my parents and think they are highly intelligent and successful people, but I’d be the first to say that neither of them is king (or queen) material! Nicole’s got it right a few comments up where she says that no one starts out as “king material.” They grow into it. Dan and Alex both have a lot of growing to do to fit that description.
There are some subtleties here. And a lot of it still hasn’t worked itself out yet.
But here’s some thoughts:
1) Dan was supposed to be King. He (and many other “would be kings” before him were kept out of Dreamland thanks to Nicodemus’ machinations.
The fact that Alex (through a “loophole” in being a twin) was able to wrest the sword from Arthur and take the throne doesn’t change this fact that it was Dan’s throne in the first place.
2) Dan doesn’t want this any more than Alex, really.
Neither of them are prepared to rule a magical kingdom.
Alex has Nastajia. And that’s all he cares about.
Dan is too scared even to venture into Dreamland just yet. Not until he learns more of what’s on the other side.
3) Niviene won’t be the only one who “points out the obvious” that Alex isn’t the rightful king.
4) Alex is still our hero. But Dreamland was always intended to be an ensemble cast.
I enjoy having multiple storylines.
At some point… this will need to be settled.
Alex will either decide to keep the throne to be with Nastajia, Dan may take it, Alex may give it to him, Dan may reject it, and several other possibilities can happen before the story is over.
I hope this makes sense. And I hope the journey is worth it.
π
apstorm’s got it right that they were the ones laughing…not someone hiding in the bushes…but you’ve got an excellent point. The sword is still glowing! π
Usually magical things that react in the presense of the “rightful bearer” do so immediately because they are designed to designate who should bear them. A delayed reaction seems highly unlikely, so I’m going to stay worried for now. I think some wraiths are about to poof back to the Nightmare realm and report to Abbadon. π
Actually, YES!!, Alex IS king material. You don’t have to be some kind of genius to be king. A king only needs to surround himself with people like that to advise him and Dan fits that qualification but definitely doesn’t have what’s rerquired to be king of anything. I don’t like where this is going at all!
WHile I see your point of view, there are some things I didn’t read the same way you did. Most of the “Alex bashing” was done behind his back. Like someone had mentioned, “What siblings don’t make fun of each other?” Also, in this case, I don’t think it was really “Alex Bashing” but actually a comparison of how either of them are “king” material. It wasn’t meant to bring Alex down, it was meant to say that Alex and Dan were on par with each other. They are both equally “unprepared”.
As Scott pointed out, “Alex has Nastajia. And thatβs all he cares about.” Alex’s “Kingly’ actions are dictated by the fact that he’ll do -anything- to make -her- happy. Since her concerns were first for Dreamland, he did that. Now her concerns are for her parents (and not Dreamland), so what is he doing? Saving her parents.
Just as people have mentioned that Dan has the “brain” for kingly things, so does Alex have the “gusto” for kingly things. But as far as being “king material” that’s all they’ve got so far, which leaves them -both- lacking.
Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis: Suppose I go around claiming to be an emperor just ’cause some moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me. They’d put me away!
Arthur: Shut up, will you? Shut up! *grabs Dennis*
Dennis: Now you will see the violence inherent in the system!
Arthur: Shut up!
Dennis (shouting): Come and see the violence inherent in the system! Help! Help! I’m being repressed!
Arthur: Bloody peasant! *lets go*
Dennis: Oh, what a giveaway. You saw it, right? You saw him repressing me? You saw it, didn’t you?
yes if Alex wasn’t supposed to be the King of Dreamland he would not have been ale to pull the sword out of the rock…. I know Dan is supposed to be King, yet Alex has the sword and possession is 9/10ths of the law. Alex may be Alex but he is in fact the holder of the sword and until such time as he decides to give it to Dan, or anyone else, Alex is the rightful King of Dreamland…
The only character I currently see as monarch material is Nastajia. She has the upbringing, courage, history and is an actual Dreamlander. She knows how to lead and others willingly follow her. Neither Alex nor Dan fit that bill yet.
The temporal scope of the story so far hasn’t been that long. A semester, perhaps? While both Alex and Dan have characteristics that would be useful as monarchs, that’s hardly enough time to develop them. In contrast, Nastajia was raised by monarchs, and has been a practicing monarch for about two years with her parents gone.
I’m not arguing the fact over who is king, or who is worthy of being king, that is a dead horse already. What is irritating is all ‘bashing’ is all on Alex, no one else can get made fun of, no one else gets their flaws pointed out, it’s all Alex and from since I have read from the beginning, that is all it has ever been. I just wish someone would actually stand up for him or if would actually stand up for himself.
You should have someone be King who didn’t want the responsibility, but would do a decent job. Both Alex and Dan have not been raised as Princes and their styles are different ( Extrovert man of action vs introverted thinker). But I think either could become a decent King although it would be a rocky start for the one who got the job.
Consider what happens if Alex marries Nastajia. Isn’t there a Royal conflict of interest if a Prince of the Elves ascends to the throne of Dreamland? Dan would have to become king. Only Alex is there now, but I can’t see a problem with both of them being there at the same time. After all Arthur was assassinated because he did find a way to bring in regular humans. If Dan becomes King, then Alex and Nicole can arrive as regular humans . Of course that would increase their problems, since the factions behind the killing of Arthur would certainly be against them doing it. Certainly looks like the action is going to increase here. ( Can’t stand it! – The suspense is killing me. )
And now we have advanced allies ( maybe ) in Seraphopolis. Do they have the ability to cross the barrier between worlds? Will they share? On the third hand, could they figure it out? ( Provided they don’t know it already. ) It’s OK, Scott. Take your time and do it right. WE SHALL WAIT.
Wow, this sparked more than I intended. o_O I even got creator attention, that’s nerve wracking.
Thanks for pointing out that previous comment–I don’t read for creator comments as a rule because I don’t want to be spoiled, and all it usually takes is me getting an inside into the way of thinking (curse Professional Writing courses. >.<). I can see that there's going to be a lot of discussion (or arguing/fighting) about which of these brothers is going to end up the King of Dreamland in the end, so I feel moderately less annoyed over it.
My feelings about how Alex is treated hasn't changed. And I really resent the, "what siblings don't call each other stupid?" comments. My brother is five years older than me, I KNOW about the love/hate relationship siblings can have with each other. But whenever we were insulting each other or having one of our squabbles, it all died the MOMENT anything serious started. Case in point: TW and I were having serious fights when he was a senior in high school. My mom was at her wit's end with the pair of us. But when his first girlfriend publicly broke up with him, I dropped all my hard feelings and STOPPED TEASING AND CALLING HIM NAMES because he didn't need that on top of the emotional hurt he was feeling, the stresses of going to the state debate competition, picking a college, and maintaining his grades. We were both much less mature than Dan claims to be, and Alex is trying to be now, and a lot younger. Alex is currently in a lot of danger, under a lot of stress and pressure, and that's before you consider the fact he is still a struggling college student. I can't understand why Dan is continuing to undermine him, even behind his back to his girlfriend–in fact, that almost makes it worse.
YAY!! Better lip color on Nicole! Yes, yes that was bothering me just that much that I had to celebrate it being darkened a bit closer to the ‘often found in nature’ shade.
Wait until his mom sees that thing.
Dan: Mom, the lady of the lake gave me Excalibur through the old nearby pond. It apparently glows when kittens are nearby. Can I keep it?
Dan’s mom: O-K, but if you make a mess in the house with it it’s gone!
More importantly… appealing to her age is hardly a reasonable basis for assuming she knows what she is doing…
And Alex has a greater connection to Dreamland, having spent much of his life there. He is more likely to act in the land’s best interests.
FURTHERMORE, Alex is the action-guy of the twins… better able to be of use with a physical presence. Dan’s strength lies in information, which can be done from Earth.
I just want to hug Dan in that last panel. He’s so Adorkable. π
Well, to be honest, no one is “king” or “queen” material. They all started from somewhere. And Dan and Alex both have the ability and the goodness to make great kings.
Be brave, Dan!
I’m thinking that expression in the last panel is Dan’s “Welp, Dreamland is doomed” face.
Given the current situation (especially Alex’s quest and the dangers they’ve encountered) I think Alex is better for king for the time being. Right now they need someone who is good at action rather than philosophy. However, when things settle down, they would need a more thoughtful king. And as another note, may I add that the Ladies of the Lake aren’t usually considered the most TRUSTWORTHY OF PEOPLE?
If there were Rep points on this board all of mine would go to you as I completely agree!
They’re having a unwisely revealing discussion here. Have they totally forgotten about who ever was laughing in the bushes, or was that laugher ascribed to the two of them?

I’d say the laughter was meant to be theirs..?

Amen to that, I couldn’t have put it better myself.
When Alex finally does stand up for himself, we will see the beginnings of “king” material.
No one has ever said Dan was mature. Only smart. He and Alex are two sides of the same coin.

Practically speaking, they’re all a bit bonkers.
