I just see how in a while, when they have to abort this mission (or the Seraphopolis folks decide it needs to be aborted,) all of them are falling down asking Alex nervously, ‘Can you fly us yet?’
And right now, we’re #3 on TWC with 13,301 votes, #2 having 14,737. With 10 more days to go, they’re still within our reach. Thank you everybody who kept voting through weekend. Everybody else, hop on board and start voting!
Why wouldn’t they just stand on the 4th island under water? I mean they were all right there, it was what a few meters swim… just get on the last one and ride all the way up in one shot
‘they can’t fly that high’… well depending on the type of flight they use they may be able to fly ABOVE the islands even if it’s above their max flight height. I read somewhere houseflies can’t fly over 3 stories high, but they can get to the top of a 5 story building, by using the stairs/ elevator (they never get over 1 story above the ‘ground’).
I vote for this explanation. Otherwise the islands would have been trying to rise on their own underwater; someone needs to activate them in order for them to work.
I just had a “duh” moment. I never realized that it was the end of the waterfall down here next to the comment box. Huh. It’s funny what you see when you look.
Dude. Area 51 is one of my favorite arcade games of all time. It had just the right mix of challenge and pick up and play that you could start playing and keep playing for a long time. I even finished the game once, with another guy. I think that is the only arcade game I’ve ever finished. I used to get 5 or 10 bucks in quarters, go over to Area 51, and play for an hour or two, just having fun blowing stuff up. I spent a lot of time and got a lot of fun out of that game. Thanks for being involved in it. 🙂
Agreed. He now “knows” he can’t fly the whole way because the fish lady told him, so he won’t be able to fly the whole way. If he didn’t know he couldn’t though, he simply WOULD fly the whole way. Because this is Dreamland, and you can do whatever you think you can do in your dreams. 🙂
I would imagine it’s more a limitation of where they’re going than it is believing or not believing. Seraphopolis exists between the two worlds, if I’m reading things correctly, so normal Dreamland powers might not work there. The stones are physically moving up, but at some point they’ll cross the boundary. Just my thoughts on it, anyways. Otherwise it does seem silly that a magical form of flight would have a height limit.
I know this may be a bit stupid, but up until the second island rose, I thought that the first would go all the way. Maybe that’s what they were thinking, too…
Why would Alex know all that, if only one person (or maybe more) here figured out that explanation? I don’t know… personally, I need an explanation for why there is a limit as well. I guess that’s because I’m a silly grown-up with no imagination. 🙁

Very good explanation for these past few weeks of discussion about the flying issue. 😀
I mean days, DAYS, not weeks.

This is starting to look a little bit like a platformer game.
Yup. I was a game designer for years… and just wanted a fun little tribute to some fun games in the book.
Dreamland is an amalgamation of all of my favorite things.
🙂
It figures!
What games did you desing?? I wonder if I played any of them…
Designed: Tecmo Hockey (Sega Genesis), Area 51 (Arcade), Primal Rage (Arcade), and I’m sure a few others I can’t remember.
Worked on (art or produced): Kid Chameleon, Starcraft (N64), The Game of Life, Jimmy Johnson Football, Aliens vs. Predator, X-Files, and a ton others.
I got into games my Jr. year of college (1990) and been involved ever since.
After a while…it’s kind of a blur.
*cue Super Mario Music*
Jumping puzzles suck. :p Especially in games with a first-person perspective.
Don’t mind it in the comic, though, ’cause it isn’t me doing it.
Hoping that Alex doesn’t wake up mid jump…
Too bad I can’t “like” comments on here 😛

Because, ummmm, that would be no fun?
I agree, but let’s just say “it’s magic”, or “it’s Alex” so we can stop trying to think logically.

Perhaps Island #2 won’t rise unless someone is standing on Island #1, Island #3 won’t rise unless someone is standing on Island #2, etc.
😉

could be worse, they could be frogs trying to beat a hedgehog pie in a timed game of “red light green light” in order to get a stupid key
Yes I’m looking at you, Final Fantasy 9. Grrr.
The Mind is the Only Limit!

+1, LOL

Hopping Islands, or island hopping?!?
Or maybe Hopping Islands Hopping?
Uh, whatever. Just press space bar while running to the edge. 🙂
Woah! that’s crazy! I never saw that either. 🙂
