The difference between having boys and having girls.
If a parent caught their DAUGHTER kissing a boy…there’d be trouble.
But if it’s your nerdy son? JOY!

I can jut see her knocking Maxwell Pig off the zip line or the street luge and going “Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!” 😀
I feel like Daniel just dug himself into a hole that he won’t be getting out of for a while. Not only did he just lie to his mother, which is *never* a good idea, especially when she obviously has just seen otherwise, but he also just lied about his relationship with his girlfriend, which is, also, *never* a good idea, especially right in front of her. All those brains, and so few smarts sometimes.
The really sad thing is, she was probably overjoyed, since she considers both of them to be quite smart and that their families have known each other for a while.
Of course, Alex has to be loving this, because he is about to get at least a small measure of payback on Daniel for all of the times that Daniel has asked him how he could be so stupid, and yet this time, Alex probably knew how bad of a call this is (or at least will claim to not be *that* dumb).
OMG! Way too hilarious. The extreme nerd moment is painful, yet so incredibly laughable. I can tell Nicole is going to kick his butt during their next alone moment. The look on her face is….priceless!
Oh snap.
Poor Dan. Caught between youth and adulthood. Nothing like a disapproving mom to wipe out your self-confidence and knock you back into the crib! 🙂
This page is way better with the bloom… 😀 Don’t know if you even read my comment, but I like it much better than yesterday’s.
Also: what’s so bad about admitting the truth, Dan? Nicole is a fine gal.
Just when you think there is no way to outdumb Alex…
I think you get a bit of leeway with dating: your parents will realize you’re going to be a bit stupid about it for a while.
Ah, but is</i she disapproving? Or is she merely curious and/or teasing/taunting/testing the waters?
I admit, the eyebrows do not speak exhilaration about the whole thing, but downright disapproval does not automatically ensue.
“What got into you to say that?”
“I PANICKED, OK?”
Love the Princess Bride paintings. If you happen to be taking suggestions for the next one, have you considered Vizzini? To me, the interactions between Vizzini, Fezzik, and Inigo are my favorite parts of the movie.
Also, I happen to own the ThinkGeek shirt that says “Inconceivable!”
Oh boy! Dan IS in a very fine pickle or is that Nicole?!?!?
LOL!! this is definitely one thing I don’t understand about dating, especially in the US (’cause I’m from there.) The need to hide that you love someone, especially from your parents no matter what, and sometimes even for as long as possible.
Is this real or just a stereotype? It makes no sense to me, and personally, if I was Dan’s girlfriend in that situation, I’d feel a little depressed and let down. Especially since he’s supposedly so smart and sweet. Why does he need to hide that we’re together? 😛
If Scott’s comment about today’s comic is any kind of hint, I’d say she’s teasing. 🙂
Of course, besides the boy/girl difference, there’s also a difference with age. A fourteen year old girl would not be the same as one who’s eighteen, or boys either.
A parent asking an obvious question is not for the benefit of the parent, but for the development of the child (and yes, because it is a first time, some leeway should be given). If he had owned up to it immediately it would mean two things, he is a man and he had thought about it. Given his current response (which could change in the next panel to the truth), I would say he is riding his emotions and hasn’t REALLY put a lot of thought into the relationship with Nicole except that he ‘likes’ it.
‘Smart and Sweet’ and maturity are completely different. Gender speaking, men act and think about their feelings later. women feel and think first pondering the outcome before acting. This is a generalization of genders of course (there are some exceptions).
For the sakee of their relationship, Nicole CAN’T let Dan’s response ride. It will be interesting if she deals with him in front of his mother or in private. Then will she respond to him verbally or non-verbally (cold shoulder, smack him, etc).
However, if Nicole is mature, she will ackowledge his lack of maturity, but still call him on it.
Scott, how would you want your sons to respond to this situation? Or if you had a daughter (besides chastity belt and confinement to her room( how would you respond?
>.> she is afraid that someone will steal her Danny away.
Creepy.
Most parents want the best for their children, expect scrutiny. It’s love under a microscope.
I would want to be sure that my child was conciously making decisions about their lives. It’s good for a reality check when it comes to hormones.
Men in Tights? 😛
Ah… but does the girlfriend allow the same leeway?
I think not. ;o)
I think Nicole just needs to give him a little ‘Gibsing’ to pull him out of brainlock and mabey he can set himself right
great, now I’m gonna have that song in my head!
“We’re men. Men in tights”
Boys live in such fear of their mothers.
Dan is so adorkable.
well, it’s not like they’ve had an actually “Define the Relationship” moment. He’s not sure if he can properly call Nicole his girlfriend yet. I mean, they’ve been on, what, one date? Not to mention he seemed a bit surprised by her affectionate greeting. – Nicole would be unwise indeed to get upset over his unsurety.
This can be true, took me going to boot camp to fully get over that; not that I was ever quite that bad lol. However once you’ve had a female sgt screaming in your face old mom never can quite invoke the same fear.
Ok one more thought here, so long as Dan can pull it together enough to at least ‘break even’ on this exchange I think he’s going to get a vary satisfying moment when Alex says ‘Oh speaking of girlfriends mom could you meet me down by the lake at about oh say 8 tonight; I’d like you to finally meet mine…”

good point!
Ha ha, LOVELY move of mom!!! 😀
First get her off balance, then BAM!, hit her (them) with a “killer” question… she’s still got the touch! Very nicely laid, Scott!
In situations like this… the guy should just not say anything.
And just think about what to say before saying it.
I love her face in the first panel. “IMA KILL YOU FOR TAKING MY BABY’S LIPS YOU F***IN WH***!!!” “TIMMY, GO TO YOUR ROOM! DON’T THINK YOU’LL GET AWAY WITH THIS EITHER! PAPA, GET YOUR BELT AND TEAR HIS A** UP!!!”
…
Anyone else interpret the face that way…?
Oh I’d like to see that. XD
Mrs. Carter just has that crazy psycho-mom look in her eyes….
She has a creepy expression.
Pardon me English, that should probably be “off guard”, not “off balance”. But I guess I was close enough to make my point.
Ha! I stand very much corrected. – also, it is clear to see who wears the pants in this relationship.
Unless of course, mom also happened to be a female drill sergeant.
