And here we see how Niviene got Merlin’s staff and why she encased him in a tree (which is according to some legends).
It was a LOT of fun trying to wrap this love story into both Arthurian lore as well as the existing Dreamland story.
As some pointed out…I may have a few bits of dialog from Chapter 15 I may have to contend with to wrap up ALL plotholes.
But I think it wraps up pretty nicely.

An interesting take on that legend. Especially since Niviene is almost always depicted as an evil character in the legend. Here, she seals Merlin’s doom against her will and unaware of the consequences. Poor girl.
So… there’s a world between Dreamland and the waking world? Hmm… interesting…

I hope that, when all is said and done… they get to be together. Because really, that right there is the sweetest love story.

Which version of the legend are we talking about here. I am very keen on reading it.
I am very fond of Stephen Lawhead’s interpretation of the legend. Here fits the story almost perfectly into history by including Roman influence in the Welsh lands. I recommend it to everyone. First book is called Taliesin. Then comes Merlin, tolled by Arthur and Pendragon. I don’t recommend the last one unless of course you were as thrilled as I was after reading the first three. The series is called The Pendragon Cycle.

A thousand years and she hasn’t tried to find out where he went? Niviene has either become far less impetuous and active than the girl who dared swim out into the wilderness to test her boundaries and see what there was to see, or there’s more to the story.

I thought the legend had him being sealed in a mountain? Hmm. Multiple versions, no doubt.
….I expect that would set off a roaring rampage of revenge that would put Daine( of the Tamora Pierce series ” The Immortals”) to shame. And Daine had *quite* a RRR. there were zombie dinosaurs.
Also, there are most likely protection charms.
Nice way to “wrap it up”–but it is a rather sappy ending to the love story.

Y’know, Scott, the chapter 5 thing could very easily be explained as “I know nothing of the current political state in dreamland because I’ve been keeping company with a mermaid who doesn’t keep up with current events….”
…but since Arthur probably already knew that, then “I know NOTHING of dreamland” sufficed.

Time for a trip to the UK. Every college student should go backpacking through the UK right? Gotta find that tree. 🙂 Interesting so would this also suggest that the disappearance of what are now mythical creatures in our world like unicorns, elves, giants, merfolk, goblins, wraiths etc could be attributed to whatever created the portal in the lake in the first place?

Actually, in one story, by sealing him inside of this prison, he escaped to the land of dreams. He went into Arthur’s dreams to help him just before Arthur had to face Mordread, his twisted son.
