FINALLY!
So sorry about the delay. I am in DIRE need of computer upgrades.
I’ll work through the weekend to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
Thanks for your patience.

Yay, more Latin!! I’m assuming we’re going for “Divide! Allow me to pass through the great space”? If so, “magna” should read “magnum”, but it looks good otherwise.
In other news, I have a feeling she’s not going to make it all the way, but one can hope anyway! Go, Niviene, go!
We finally get to see the Lady’s Hand emerge from the Lake!!
Great moment. Panels 3 and 4 are PERFECT! You really captured the essence of motion. Well done… as always Scott!
AWESOME! As usual.
Woo! Woo! Woo!
GO, NIVIENE, GO!
I wouldn’t worry about it too much, sometimes a page will take longer than others just due to the nature of the page.
first?
a pitty! :S
Nice story twist by the way
On that subject of computer upgrades, here is something to make you drool…..
http://www.amax.com/hpc/productdetail.asp?product_id=FSC-4n1
(Now, if you can only win the lottery and purchase such a computer.)
A mermaid, is a mermaid, is a mermaid? OR is a mermaid in Dreamland a Fish on Earth (or human on land)?
It’s going to have to be a humanoid for an intimate relationship with Merlin.
AND PLEASE EVERYONE – stay away from trying to micro-analyze the Latin. It’s the intent behind the phrase that bends the will to what will be (not the magic words).
This is how Dreamland magic works now, is it? 😛
This needs the music from 2001 Space Odyssey in the background!
ba boom ba boom ba boom ba boom…
da daa DAAA DAA – DAAAAAAA!!
What are supposed to micro-analyze instead?
BOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOM…. BOOM
Nice!
Still a lot to speculate about though, on transferring between Dreamland and here. It’s not as simple as it looks.
Well, there is no point to analyze magic words just because words is only medium for mage’s will. They doesn’t work by themself and might be replaced with literally anything.
Nice grass!!!!
Really enjoying this Scott – thanks!
@Quaro:
And as a complete antithesis to your post… 🙂

I know which one I’m going to buy.
Eli.
There’s got to be a catch! I just know it. Even with magic you don’t get something for nothing!
Another pi-person. They seem to get everywhere 😮
I think everyone is missing the real thing to micro analyze here.
Teach this spell to Nastajia, to Felicity, to anyone in dreamland, pick a nearby pool of water in the real world for them to appear through, and now suddenly they can be in the same room as Alex, Dan, and Nicole.
The wraiths aren’t the only ones that can cross worlds now.
Think of the possibilities.
Global invasion of hot Elven chicks?
I’m afraid of hands coming out of water. They tend to be someone drowning or a monster (aka my mom’s friend’s stupid bully of a son) trying to drown me. I hate hands coming out of water ><
Magic is a talent, not a bunch of words (words just focus the talent). In other words, not everyone can do magic, just like not everyone can see spirits.
It’s okay, this was singular (one hand).
Ah, but do we have proof that Niviene had any talent for magic before meeting merlin? For all we know, it’s something that can be taught to anyone, and some are just more gifted initially then others.
Very dramatic in the last 2 panels!
And that sure is some nice volumetric grass!
I predict some severe limitations will be imposed upon this means of crossing between worlds, assuming the magic pool still exists.
Epic! 🙂
Of course this just reminded me of my most epic commute to work. That’s the music that began playing as I pulled into the parking lot. It made me feel pretty awesome. 😛
I agree with David. The way magic works is dependent upon the universe it’s set in. Some stories require that the magic user has some sort of in-born talent or gift. Other stories make magecraft something that can be done by anyone who is willing to put the time and effort into it…just like sword skills.
Awesome page Scott, was worth the wait!!! ^_^
Now will Niviene be able to leave the lake fully or bang her head on the dimensional barrier!?!? O_o
That would be very sad, yet strangely funny!
Here’s something for you guys to think about.
What do you think would happen if Alexander tried it?
I have to wonder if this was the basis of his spell that would of allowed more human adults to go to Dreamland.
Holy crap!
So, experiment with an interdimensional portal, and make the LADY reach across first…
So, if anything goes wrong, it’s her that takes the repercussions.
Way to go, Merlin. Age of Chivalry, huh?
Hey Scott, I see your crying out for Computer upgrades. Check out newegg. for the DIY PC Combos man. They got some I Cores running around 300 to a grand. From i3 to i7’s. It’s worth a check. Just a computer techy helping out. 😀
To be fair, she can breathe water and air and will be fine if she comes up through Merlin’s side. Merlin can’t breathe water as far as we know, so going through to her would not be the best idea.
why is there no next page i want to see what happend so please let me see what happend on they next page i no there steel making it but let me see for people who love this story
Thank you!
That looks like a cloud system sadly. Each computer can have up to 2x 6 xeon core with 12 threads and 12MB L2 cache per processor. Still, would love to have that haha I wouldn’t need an upgrade for the next 5 years haha
Something you skipped, talent (or sensitive to magic, depends on how you view it) is not only born-in but many times predisposed to race or species. Mermaids have the power (now at least) to grant people ability to tern into a mermaid, though temporarily. So they have a predisposition to be sensitive to magic, which in-turn they have the ability, with time and practice (according to many versions of magic/universe rules), to use various types of magic. Though they may not be able to master it as well as the native species/race would, they can still “borrow” that magic.
A paradox… NOOOOOOO!!!!
If it is not too much to inquire, what are the system specs you are running at present?
I’m running i7 CPU [email protected] GHZ
12 GB ram
64 Bit Vista
upgrade to windows 7 while you’re at it
I have a Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit install/upgrade DVD I could lend you. Just need to buy a license key. Then you could go max out your RAM to 192 GB. 😀
Hey, it’s cool Scott. No need to overwork yourself.
my mind as just been blown! O.O
Ah, but we have yet to see the full results of the spell, and any potential drawbacks.
Or “Also sprach Zarathustra” as the original is called… 😀
If you are running a motherboard capable of handling an i processor then an update to windows 7 might not hurt. Overall though that’s a fairly up to date board it sounds like. Granted there will be things to look at like can it handle 2, 4, or 6 RAM chips and what type of video card you are running. Based on what you’ve said though maybe a beefier video card (or cards if your machine is capable of supporting crossfirex). overall though not a bad system you have there, might not need a lot sunk into it to bring it up too your expectations.
am I the only one who thinks that the last two panels would make an excellent scene in a horror movie? 😀
Is it just me that thinks that hand (in panel 3) looks like it has spotted tyfus or some other lepracy disease? Minds me of something coming out of a grave rather than out of water.
When you first emerge from water, you are cover by a thin, non-broken layer of water. It takes a few seconds for it to break, and when it does, you sure don’t look like you have spotted tyfus! 😉
Panel 4 shows this pretty good, I like that one!
It’s not a cloud system, it’s a personal supercomputer, Decent60. If you immediately label a powerful computer to only one category, I’d hate to see how your mind operates.
Yeah, but are pi people rational?
EVERYONE’S an expert on the physics of water when you stick your hand out of a lake…huh?
🙂
Well…the render issues keep coming…and to top it off…I now have a COLD!
UGH!
So sorry for this week, all.
It’s so frustrating to watch these renders churn out hour after hour.
If I find a solution (other than new CPUs) I’ll definitely implement them.
Otherwise. All I can do is work through the weekend to see that I get enough of a lead to make sure this doesn’t happen again next week.
Could be texture overload. Had that happen with my 3D comic renders. I had to lower the resolution of my character textures to speed things up. This was on my old computer, though, so I’ve since corrected that.
I suggest the routine maintenance bits first, if you haven’t already done them: defrag and such. Also check and make sure that you didn’t pick up a bit of odd malware along the way. Just my two cents, so take it with a grain of salt if you’re ahead of me there.
Still loving your story.
Don’t burn yourself out! That’s how you get sick in the first place, and stay sick longer… 🙁 We appreciate your devotion to your update schedule, but I’d rather you have time on the weekends to wind down and relax with your family.
WIN7 will definately help. However, I think your GPU maybe the issue versus CPU. The rest of your PC sounds pretty beafy.
Agreed. They have tried to cross from Dreamland before to disastrous results. Although it is pretty cool to see this, the first attempt, after seeing Arthur’s failure.
I would have agree, though I would try adding the graphics card first before installing a new OS. Besides Win7 is Vista with all of its bug fixes. (don’t believe me check the cmd version 6.1 ;))
With the amount of ray tracing going on with all that water? You need Tiger 1 or Tiger 2 to do your rendering.
Looks awesome.
After? I thought this was *before*.
There are a couple good ideas to spread the work out, including render farms. One option that might come up in the future, though, is this: The super computer place I work for is experimenting with the idea of virtual machines on their supercomputers. Which means that one could have the power of a supercomputer with the easiness to use of windows, possibly. If they do go that way, I can see if I can get you some time on it, Scott. However, that’s awhile down the road…
It really depends on how Maya renders things… Blender, for example, doesn’t even USE the graphics card in its calculations. So Scott would need to check whether maya even uses the graphics card before he upgrades. Otherwise it would be money wasted.
I agree with Redbeard.
True that- I didn’t even think about that!
is it just me or,not to be picky…,that it looks like her hand has scales on it…..probably just me!BTW Scott it looks awesome!
dont want to be fussy ya no….
It looks like its not scales, but water clinging to her skin.
Are you rendering each panel individually? Then multiple CPUs kicking around would definitely be a help, heck I’ve been pricing generic boxes for simple applications, and 4Gb of DDR3 + a SB Pentium is less than $200 including case and mother board. I would worry less about hardware costs than licensing. Would you have to buy multiple copies of your software? If you did, hardware costs become trivial by comparison.
I remember from playing with bryce a long while ago that grass is a beast on rendering.
In The Once and Future King, Merlyn turns Wart into a fish by speaking a spell something along the lines of, “Snylre’m stnemilpmoc ot Enutpen, dna fi eh dluow yldnik tpecca siht yob sa a hsif.”
Verbatim is not my strong point, but I think I more or less got it right.
No, but they are delicious in apple form.
The holiest.
