Page 1430…
Happy Thursday, All!
Thanks for indulging me yesterday with that whole SOPA thing.
You are all so wonderful to support me in all that I do. Thank you.
I hope you’re enjoying the story of Merlin and Niviene.
We have a couple more weeks of it…then back to Dreamland again.
Thanks
Scott
Love Merlin’s raised eyebrow in the last panel. You can tell he’s pondering how this portal might be useful…Love this young version of Merlin.
Whoa, apparently it IS Merlin. It hadn’t been said in the comic yet, had it?
Oh, shoot. I should have double-checked BEFORE I posted.
Question is…does Merlin teach her magic? Does he know any (at this time) himself? Does he learn by observing her world? *shrug* Glad you’re back, Scott.
Ten bucks say that he is thinking “Cool! A magical peeping pool! I wonder if there is a way to use it….”
“safety” is very relative when you have to swim into an area infested by sea serpents to do the viewing. *g*
That wizard he’s a schmott guy!
Is wizardress actually a word? I’ve never heard it before but it sounds like one.
So, the raising of a single eyebrow, and use of the word ‘Fascinating’
I think Mr Spock has been playing about with time travel again.
How about “sorceress”?
Man, Merlin is SO striking me as a scheming opportunist. I can’t help but fear a bit for Niviene.
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/wizardess 🙂
Well supposedly Merlin taught her how to stay forever young (according to Dreamland myth and legend). 🙂 As for how much he knows now…I’d wager he knows a bit. 😉
That’s the feminine version of sorceror (and a lot of fantasy I’ve read makes a distinction between sorcerors and wizards)…wizardess would seem to the the appropriate feminine form of wizard (unless you go the route of witches and wizards instead).
I don’t think it’s necessary to fear for her. His opportunism is probably more than likely related to having her spy on people in his world and reporting back. There’s no danger for her in that since the portal is currently “view only”…one would hope… 🙂
But …. but …
We know already from the Artur Saga’s that in the near future she can also access the real world and give the sword to Artur.
Does Marlin already know this, i wonder?
I’m not sure she’s leaving the cave. Having to swim through a gauntlet of sea serpents every day, coming and going, would be too dangerous. Especially if any of them had the brains to figure out where her course would always take her. She might be stuck in the cave complex, living on the fish she can catch…
We do know she was watching him “practice his magic”, so he must know some already.
Maybe Merlin is responsible for her ability to access this world.
I see him thinking along the lines of, “OK, vision can cross the barrier of worlds through the water, so it wouldn’t be so hard to get other things across the barrier. We just need to open the door a little wider. . . .”
Yeah, Merlin is considering the possibilities…
Apparently, light energy can pass through the portal, but matter can not. However, if you had the ability to transform matter into energy, and then transform it back to matter, passage through the portal becomes feasible.
Nah. It’s witches and warlocks, so we pretty much need wizardess as the feminine of wizard.
That’s exactly how I feel to!!
Nivene’s choice of words is interesting too. Safety of your world? Is your world so much safer than ours? Is this how you talk to the boy you like? “Your world is dangerous. I’m happy to stay safe in my world where you and your kind can’t harm me.” And “denizen” sounds like a word to describe monsters of the nightmare realm or something…
+1
“I love physics, I love physics, yes I do, yes I do!” 😀
I’m sure I could be wrong, but it is my understanding that except for sorcerer and enchanter, the terms/titles are sexless. In other words you can have a sorcerer/sorceress; enchanter/enchantress. But a witch, warlock, and wizard can be male or female.
Also a witch (now called wiccan) generally uses nature; warlock (actually means oathbreaker) is generally believed to use demonic power (granted by lucifer); a wizard or magician manipulates reality (like an illusionist); a sorcerer is a higher classification of wizard/magician; an enchanter specifically deals with binding an individual to their will (like a hypnotist and/or illusionist).
I’m also aware that society blurrs the definitions between all of these.
In the world of magic the title of Merlin is awarded to a single living magician of high standing (I don’t know the parameters).
The legend of Merlin has him in all of these classifications.
What is with the weird emphasis on certain words? Why are random things italicized and/or bold?
Scott probably just wanted to know how critical his readership was and someone finally responded to the font styling.
After 1400 pages, you’re JUST noticing this NOW?
I think you are confusing him with Gilgamesh Wulfenbach.
Yes, light energy can pass through. But so can physical energy. Sound is generated by the vibration of matter. The only way they can talk to each other is if matter of SOME KIND can move back and forth. Unless this is some kind of mental telepathy or something instead of actual talking…
It certainly is amazing how long it takes some people to notice the habits of a writer of something that they read regularly. I mean I pop on to read Scott’s amazing pages of Dreamland every day. I can’t get enough of the idea of dreamland and the imagination behind it. Scott I’m probably not the first or the last to say this but you are such an amazing artist/writer/creator of this world and comic and I hope you know that! And when I have the money…(I am just a poor unemployed at the moment college student so it may be a while) but I will own all the books of your comic and maybe a Paddington doll. He and Kiwi are so entertaining.
Heheh, that’s EXACTLY what I was thinking, in the most playful way possible of course, but it still made me giggle. ^_^
🙂
I was wondering who else got that reference.
Hmmm. Now I’m really curious.
We saw earlier that Niviene ends up with Merlin’s staff. Plus there is the legend of how Arthur got the sword (the Lady of the Lake one, not the Sword in the Stone one). And we’ve never seen exactly how the Sword of Kings transfers to the next King of Dreamland.
We may have a bunch of mysteries solved in the next couple of weeks!
Hey, look! A webcomic!
