The fairy says mile when she should be saying miles. Yay for reaching $12,000$!!!!
Not to be too nitpicky, but a 100 square mile area is not that big. It is a 10 mile by 10 mile area. Considering that an adult standing on the surface of the Earth can see for 2 miles if the terrain was flat, they could search the entire area by only flying to a few points (unless this is a really tiny island and you have to be really close to it for it to be seen).
On ships the crewman in a crows nest (approx. 12 meters up) could see for a little over 8 miles in every direction, and given that they are flying, Ithink getting 12 meters up would not be a problem for them.
Saying it could be anywhere in a 100 square mile area may sound like a huge area, but doing some analysis of the situation shows that saying that is more like saying, “I know exacty where it is”.
I still say it’s an island in the sky. This is fantasy after all. =)
@ Zelf you forget clouds 🙂 perhaps there are alot of clouds in the sky at the altitude they need to search? (Or, more likely, the island is magically camouflaged)
LOVE Nastajia’s skin tone in this light!!
Does anyone mind the shadow Paddington casts on her?
I like it. Thought it was unique. But want to make sure it’s not stupid.
Actually, Maxwell64, it’s correct to say, “a hundred square mile area”. I think it’s because it’s being used as an adjective instead of a noun.
I say the secret location is within the map. I’m sure Alex is someone who would read MAD magazine. Just fold the map and the secret will be revealed. LOL
You saying Al Jaffe made the map?
🙂
I didn’t realize it was a shadow. I thought the sun was setting/rising. (Whoops)
Ah yes… Mr Jaffe… 🙂 He had a side job in the 1970s doing the fold-ins for the Electric Company magazine (no joke!).
I didn’t notice first, but now it seems weird. Why the swahdow must absolutely cut in half nastajia face in both picture, and also the shadow is too sharp.
Note: Floating island. That means that they would have to be 12 meters ABOVE the island in order to see it the way you described.
Okay, maybe I missed something- as I was reading the other comments, I’m thinking we’re not all thinking the same thing here by the word, “floating”. When she said it, and maybe this is just because I have Skyward Sword on the brain, I assumed sky island. But, I notice that others are assuming it means it’s a hydro-floating island, rather than aero-floating.
So, which is it?
I noticed it, knew what it was, and liked it.
Also, off topic, when I was commenting, I tabbed through the name, email, and url sections, but then when I tabbedd to get to the comment and started typing, it had me on post comment, caused the button to press prematurely, and gave me an error message. Then I had to press back and retype the first three fields, which was rather annoying. I’ve tested it a couple more times and it definitely tabs straight from website url to post comment. Is this a problem other people have or is my computer being stupid?
I think it works–but it should move a bit between panels (it’s not too likely that neither Paddington or Nastajia wouldn’t move a little). And the panel with Paddington backlit helps show what’s going on.
It quite possible that an ancestor of him wrote it and he carries on the secret trade. Probably a member of the Knights Templar. PS: He does look a little like Merlin. “I looked up Jaffe’s picture”
Maybe you can get him to do a fold-in for Dreamland. He still in business at 90!
I’m kind of envisioning a Castle In The Sky type scenario here for an Miyazaki fans out there. Giant floating cloud with magical protection that no one has seen because no one realized it was there.

Some of his work.
I did not notice that it was coming from Paddington until you mentioned it. I thought it was from the pillars that they are standing on or something, as I thought they were just on the middle layer of more pillars going up. I may be wrong. Either way, it looks pretty good. I have to agree though with bmonk that perhaps the shadow/nastajia need to move a bit more.
On a side note, does that mean sun is getting into 1 of her eyes but not the other. Wouldn’t that get annoying after a while?
…I’m just thinking “ask the sword”. deus ex Maquina, to be used sparingly, I know, I know. *g*
I kind of imagined it would be more of a secret island that floats (sky is my vote). The implication is you need a key, magic word, or the sun striking the right object at the right time. Think of the mountain home of the dwarfs where Smaug took up residence in The Hobbit. You could see the mountain just fine, but stumbling on the back door would be nearly impossible without a couple of clues.
I think you mean Al Jaffee. (Note the extra “e”.)

Not sure if original post went through. I typed it in, chose “Post Comment” and nada. Reloaded and still not showing. Excuse the duplicate if it did go through.
k.
Did no one notice the missing “i” in “This” in the first sentence of the first panel?
I’m just catching it now!
LOL!
it depends on whether scott intended it to be 100 square as in 10×10, or 100^2 miles, as in 100×100. I vote for 100×100. 🙂
Oftentimes, when you’re looking directly into the sun, you’ll move into a shadowed area to avoid the painful glare of the sun. It would seem more realistic if she moved by the fourth panel to hide deeper into the shadow (whether Paddington’s or the archway’s)
Our eyes only see what we want them to see… 😛
I have to agree. The lighting and colour tone in this page are superb!
Which is another beautiful comic and the fact that we reached 12K WOOP WOOP.
A) Do we know Nic actually destroyed the tablet? We had an urn of debris, but not a confirmed tablet if my leaky memory serves.
B) Nastajia is jumping to conclusions as that could be the only reason. It could have outlined a number of other things.
If it is floating, perhaps the island itself drifts within a hundred square mile area each day. It could be a moving target.
Saw the missing “i” when I first looked at the panel. Did a zoom in to see if my eyes were deceiving me. Then I went to the comment section to see if anyone else notice and got sidetrack by my brainstorm. LOL
Actually, basede on the fact that Paddington is relatively close to Nastajia (compared to the archway which sits farther back), the shadow is just sharp enough.
And yes, Scott, I figured out it was Paddington casting the shadow. At first, I thought it might have been the archway, but then seeing how the light was hitting Paddington, in the third panel, it was easy enough to conclude that he was the one casting a shadow.
the i appears to still be missing 😛
Oh right. Well I look like an idiot now. lol
The shadow looks good.
The bow string looks bent. In the bottom frame it looks like the speech bubble is drawing the bow. In the top frame it looks like it kinks at the edge of the cliff. A bow string should be straight except where it is in contact with an object, Nastajia’s the shoulder plate for example.
No, there is only one way to interpret 100 square miles, and that is 10 miles x 10 miles. 100 miles x 100 miles =/= 100 square miles. This is simple math, and if you think that there are two ways to interpret it, then you are, by definition of what a square mile is, wrong.
What would happen if Alex woke up while the were flying?
