A bit more compassion in this page. I like!
“good to know” Yea, but not very hopegiving. I guess the next step will have to be “The quest for the Amulet” or whatever that world-hopping thingymabob of Arthur is called.
I really REALLY want to see Felicity and Nicole meet (and see Dan enter dreamland for the first time)
haha, I like the `good to know`
Orion has a point, but he always brings his points in the most dramatic or rude ways… π
EVER?! Orion, that falls into the “need to know” category. Why wasn’t Alex informed of that little caveat during the time when you were explaining everything else about the sword? I like Orion and all, but sometimes he’s kind of a douche. Alex should be the one getting upset about this.
ummm, but didn’t he “give” the sword to Nichole already? first one is free? :p
well he did give it to Nichole but she wasn’t the next chosen ruler of dreamland so that would be why Alex got back in afterwards. It only lets in the currently chosen ruler
.. EVER!! No pressure, not at all
@Your answer yesterday on my A$$umption about the VWO… ahem.. You did such a good job of describing/drawing school overhere.. enn..daarom sloeg baasje de plank manifest mis π
Orion sometimes overdoes this “wise-man-gig” he needs to “lighten up…”
I agree, good to see Orion be more passionate. I half-expected him to drag Alex to the bridge and hold him over the bridge like last time and chew him out royally.
That would warrant a punch in the face from Alex. Orion never explained this CRUCIAL bit of information before. If it’s so damn dangerous, why wait until he tries to do it to tell him not to? “Oh, by the way…” is not the greatest way to add something this important, and being all imperious and angry about it just makes Orion look even worse. It’s his fault for not telling Alex. He should at least apologize for failing to mention it earlier.
I think we’re seeing some foreshadowing here… I have a feeling that Alex will eventually give the sword to Dan, since he is the “true king.” At that point, though, I’m guessing Alex would have found another way into Dreamland.
So the sword is essentially a portal device and anyone can use it once he gets his hands on it and would thus be the “chosen ruler” of Dreamland. That’s an even worse government system than outright monarchy where the next inbred twat simply inherits the position of power.
Technically this would lead to might makes it right, since the strongest one can simply take the sword. Wow, Dreamland is messed up. Time to bring them democracy.
But that’d be his brother.
Listen. Dusty tombs hiding behind invisible walls distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some box of bones.
I mean, if I went ’round saying I was an emperor just becausesome rocky hole had thrust a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!
HAPPY 4th of JULY to all the Sava’s !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
i actually pictured orion saying *in the tone of the mother and teacher from A Christmas story”* You’ll poke your eye out. at some point in time. I have always liked him and the whole race. scott i actually based the centaurs in my book off the way you made them in dreamland. I can email you the first 31 pages if you would like. just tweet me @leithfromustrea with the address.
i second that. also come back with all your fingers on tuesday everyone.
Presumably because relinquishing it is unthinkable. Seriously, would you expect Alex to willingly give up the sword to someone else for keeps? Orion expects Alex to have some degree of common sense.
This is definitely going to come into play later — I assume by Alex having to bestow the sword on the next child king of Dreamland. Or he’ll be an idiot and give it away to the wrong person. Very interesting.
Or so we have been led to believe
I agree that this foreshadows Alex giving the sword to Dan at some point, but I doubt he will find another way into dreamland for himself or Nichole. That kind of plotting lead to the fall of Author.
SUBTLE foreshadowing too.
you know the whole ruler of Dreamland thing is a pretty crappy thing when you think about it. They’re still talking to Alex like he’s a special needs kid. really the only thing it allowed him to do was get beat up on by a dragon. Assuming that Dan is going to take over his rightful place then poor Alex gets screwed out of being with the love of his life and goes back to being a doofus on earth. Here’s to hoping I’m wrong on that front.
Orion: “Not to mention that I’ll have to put another knucklehead through basic training to be king, AND I AINT GOT TIME FOR THAT JAZZ!
Oops, sorry! I had an uncle Charlie flash back from “My Three Sons” for a minute there…
WOW…30 actual words!!! (counting the “I” s)….it might be a record!!
You know it just occurred to me that Alex’s bruises are gone. Just how many nights did Nicole try the sword before they gave up on it anyway?
Your A *k-ching!* umption?
Well, however it was they defined “chosen ruler” in that spell, it was written so that, if the “chosen ruler” was a twin, either one could use the sword. Nicodemus said so a while ago.
It’s too much of an impact to him. A punch in the face requires it to be something you were expecting for you to get mad quickly enough
Or, it could be the ultimate test of maturity. Accepting that he will never go to dreamland again, and that who needs to be there is Dan
Spoiler: He eventually lets his brother have it.
I think they mentioned somewhere there’s a really complicated spell to chose him/her. Part of what the Dreamland government has to do when a King dies is find who the heck was magically chosen as the successor; and of course, they have the time limit of doing it before he/she grows up
Dan is the true king and will probably be a better ruler, so Alex giving the sword to Dan at some point is probably a given. The thing that concerns me is what happens to Nastajia that would cause Alex to never want to enter Dreamland again?
Also, from what we’ve seen of Alex up to this point, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Alex was told about this, and forgot (or dozed off in class, or whatever).
Regardless, I don’t think he’ll be forgetting this lesson any time soon …
π
Is the word “assumption” moderated or something?
Orion sure is a Jerk, sometimes (OK, consistently.) first off he drops Alex of the cliff in a “fall or fly” moment, which coulda gone Horribly wrong:
“Aaaahhhhh-!!”
((SPLATT!!))
“Oops…guess it was ‘fall’…”
It’s sorta like the tradition of martial arts senseis and sifus, etcetera – hardasses get results, because the Other option is worse! Still, he could tone it down a bit. Kid’s got enough on his plate as it is.
Quite a contrast between the way Orion handled this situation and the way Nicodemous did. (Page 1093 from Chapter 15).
I really like how Scott made us think events might repeat themselves a couple of pages ago “Foolish Child!”
The page is here:

somehow i dont agree that its dan’s rightful place anymore… he got tricked by nicodemus machinations, true, but as it is, the crown was passed to alex… and as long as he doesnt abdict or gets killed… alex is he king…..
unfair to dan? maybe
but someone isnt announced king for a limited amount of time….
Excellent semi-quotation, LOL!
“How can you tell he’s the King?” “He hasn’t got *poop* all over him!”
Maybe because Alex considered it a loan, he didn’t technically “relinquish” it?
Anyone forgetting Alex’s cousin? Wouldn’t he be in the right lineage? Hmmmmm?
I play DnD, and had a character like Orion once. Except in his case it was, “I knew I forgot something.”
What happen is Alex knocks up Nastajia and then sells the sword at a pawn shop.
haha, it`s ok. The memory of my time in “high school” are still vivid enough to draw reference from, so I can understand you got confused.
I`m curious: how did you find the comic? On DeviantART or through the link of my gravatar?
That was my thought, exactly, Ani.
Sadly, I didn’t catch that reference, but good call on that.
Devianart. Was browsing for “comics/web comics” in general, saw a cute mop of black hair, and got intrigued π Your character reminded me of my first “love” as a “brugpieper” You know? The kind of “love” that limits itself to “carrying the bag” and getting mum the moment she actually said something to me.. π― π
Hallelujah, someone who shares my exact opinion! Dan may be first born, but he’s not the rightful ruler anymore. This is Alex’s responsibility whether he likes it or not. He’s still evolving as a character; give him time and he’ll definitely be the king Dreamland needs.
Besides, Alex won’t give the sword to Dan anyway after this page. He won’t let go of Nastajia so easily and she’d never forgive him. She dealt with enough in her short life, are you people *really* going to make her give up Alex again just so Dan can be king?
Well… this page positively stinks of foreshadowing. xD
Yeah. That would have been good to know a bit sooner…
