What ever Your explanation, Orion my good man, You still act like an inconsiderate, condescending git.
Instead of critisizing, You should use Your considerable intellect to devise a way to give Felicity some happiness back, and help Dan and Nicole to dream again.
Well, I guess not all “good” characters in Thedreamlandchronicles are neccesarily “nice”characters.
Why do I have the feeling that this last statement may be important… what if there were to be an usurper that somehow manages to bend the sword’s will to his. If that happens, Alex will not be able to enter Dreamland again, because the sword would no longer accept him as a ruler…
“They’re giving away free Wacoms!”, as opposed to giving away something that isn’t free? ;-). Redundancy is wonderful! I hope you don’t write ATM machine as well!
redundancy _is_ wonderful. it helps correcting errors in the communication. but you already know that, right?
detecting redundancy and extracting real message is quite easy, especially if you know the context (e.g. you’re reading a blurb in a blog attached to a webcomic as opposed to, let’s say, ATM source) and are able to use it. bet you already heard that. right?
so, assuming the previous two premises hold, the real message of your comment would be what?
Anyone else thinks what Orion says in the first panel is kind of harsh to say in front of Felicity? For her it wasn`t just some plaything among friends, it was her only chance to see her childhood friend again.
Nastajia looks like she is thinking Orion should shut up.
Hey Orion, it’s called the Scientific Method. They had a theory, they tested it, it didn’t work. Even if you had told them the likely outcome, which you didn’t, they were trying to learn something important. The fact that it might have may Nicole and Felicity very happy had they been right would merely have been a nice bonus.
Take your attitude and shove it.
(I’m still not convinced that Orion is one of the good guys.)
I keep getting the feeling that that last bit wasn’t phrased correctly. Now that Alex is ruler, he’s not allowed to use the sword? Then what’s the point of having it?
I think the last panel is phrased quite clearly. Once it passes from the current ruler (Alex) to the next, he can no longer use it.
@Targetdrone – Alex’s mom didn’t try to enter DL with it – she was not the next ruler. It was always Alex’s from the time he found it. He just didn’t use it for part of the time, and the next ruler has not yet appeared, so it is still his to use.
@Zorland – only if the sword passes to the NEXT ruler will Alex no longer be able to use it.
I think that what Orion said might be some powerful foreshadowing of a choice Alex may have to make at some point. If he decides to allow Dan to become king, and as such gives him the sword, then it seems like that would allow Dan to rule Dreamland, but would cut off Alex from ever seeing Nastajia or the others again. Could a situation arise where Alex deems it necessary for Dan to be king, even knowing the price?
Orion, that information falls under the category of “Things We Should Know Earlier”
what if Alex had let Dan use it? It may not matter since Dan is technically the true heir, but you know the whole twin thing makes things more tricksy.
I would have suspected if anyone would have respect for the ‘office of King,’ it would have been Orion. From Orion I expected the first ‘your Majesty.’ And if Alex were to understand the full extent of the roll, he should have responded immediately with, “Orion, I value your council, need your teachings, but do not presume to lecture me especially in public.”
Of course, Alex doesn’t understand all that it means to be King. Nastajia does, though, and I expect, in private, she will take Alex to task for permitting Orion to talk that way.
Just because he’s hard on them, doesn’t mean he’s a villain. People are a lot more complex than good=super nice happy puppies and rainbows and evil=cackling crazy menace.
Yes–and he’s also implying that the danger is that, say, Nicole would be able to use it–and then Alex would no longer be the chosen King, and all their plans and training would be lost, and the Kingdom in greater danger with a unprepared ruler.
Honestly, not entirely sure what’s going on here, but one thing is clear to me: If handing someone else the sword is such a big mistake then maybe you should have said something sooner Orion! It’s not like you didn’t have plenty of opportunities you silly centaur.
I admit, Alex, or at the very least Nastajia or Felicity, should probably come back with asking why this wasn’t told to Alex sooner instead of now after it’s been tried. Had Alex have known that lending it to someone would potentially risk sealing him off from Dreamland and Nastajia forever more, then maybe he would’ve been a little bit more cautious about it.
Either way, would’ve been nice to have known beforehand…
So what Orion is saying is that it’s dangerous for Alex go go around letting random people try using the sword to get into Dreamland, because if one of those people just happens to be a potential King of Dreamland then the sword will pass to that person and Alex will be locked out of Dreamland forever.
I don’t think we have to worry too much about Dan trying the sword though. I remember a while back Orion sent some sort of critical message to Dan which from the sound of it was probably asking that Dan formally renounce all claims as a potential King of Dreamland. If that’s the case then the sword wouldn’t work for Dan anymore and Alex wouldn’t have to worry about that possible threat to his rule (and relationship with Nastaja).
Oh, wait, so, all the heirs are descendants from Arthur, yes? (Unless I misremembered.) We know of another relative of theirs, one who already travels to Dreamland, if I recall… guess they should never let their little cousin get that sword!
I doubt the sword’s will can be bent to someone else’s will like a person, but I would wager that if the sword recognized Dan as the legitimate ruler of Dreamland, Alex would no longer be allowed in.
I don’t think they need be blood relatives of Arthur–only that, by whatever the rules are, they be a potential king or queen of Dreamland, and in that sense the heir of King Arthur.
i can agree with everyone here that orion is kind of an insensitive jerk here, the were just trying to make felicity more happy and do a favor for her, what is wrong in that?
Well, it would more likely mean that if Arthur comes back, he never can wield the sword again. Since it doesnt say you cant enter dreamland anymore, but you can never Wield the Sword twice with someone else wielding it inbetween.
But since the sword is the only way for Alex to enter Dreamland, that would mean he no longer is able to, not that he is not allowed to.
But isn’t rulership of Dreamland a hereditary gig? Nicole’s no relative, as would most any friend he could toss the sword to, and his brother is specificaly blocked from using it. So…?
I’m not sure it is. We know several kings of Dreamland, including King Solomon and King Alexander of Macedon, including King Arthur. I’m not sure that Israelite, Greek and Celt are related.
Hmm. Orion is calmer than I expected. I guess Alex WON’T be lending Dan the sword after all.

Just a thought.
“They’re giving away free Wacoms!”, as opposed to giving away something that isn’t free? ;-). Redundancy is wonderful! I hope you don’t write ATM machine as well!

Crap! This sword-thingie sounds like a foul assurance deal – even worse than ol’Nick!
Anyone else thinks what Orion says in the first panel is kind of harsh to say in front of Felicity? For her it wasn`t just some plaything among friends, it was her only chance to see her childhood friend again.
Nastajia looks like she is thinking Orion should shut up.
so technically it passed to alex’ mum all the years back then? and then back to alex?
his point being?

Am I the only person who saw the “okay face” meme in panel 4?

I think he’s saying “Once it’s passed from one ruler [you] to the next,” i.e. passed to another person and from Alex, Alex may “No longer use it.”
In other words the ruler who currently has it is the only one allowed to use it.
That sword needs to come with an owner’s manual. =)
I think that what Orion said might be some powerful foreshadowing of a choice Alex may have to make at some point. I think Orion just likes saying “The Sword of Kings”. 😛
Orion, that information falls under the category of “Things We Should Know Earlier”

I hope someone stands up to Orion and tells him what we are all thinking: should have told him earlier and spared Felicity such heartache.
That he’s a pedantic git?
I’m a big fan of proper grammar usage online, but this really wasn’t a terrible infraction. Let it go, Ribbo.
Just because he’s hard on them, doesn’t mean he’s a villain. People are a lot more complex than good=super nice happy puppies and rainbows and evil=cackling crazy menace.
agreed and in at least 3 different languages.
soooo…in short
one does not simply sleep into dreamland?
Yes–and he’s also implying that the danger is that, say, Nicole would be able to use it–and then Alex would no longer be the chosen King, and all their plans and training would be lost, and the Kingdom in greater danger with a unprepared ruler.

I can’t imagine that Felicity is doing anything but reading her letter from Nicole.
^^That x 10. I completely agree. Orion is quite harsh here. By the by. Ik heb je comic bekeken. Je zit nog op het VWO??? 😯 wow….

Brilliant. 😀

MightyCleric nails it. Dan’s the guy who needs to be king, at some point, but when that happens Dan is cut off from his true love.
Ouch.
I didn’t know that was an actual meme.
As an adult, no.
Indeed
Crap, boyAlex still managed to “spawn” in Dreamland.
This means he´ll again get off Scot free with one of his idiotic blunders.
Meh.
Though good that he´s now done with effin up playing king. A doorknob would do better.
Children may enter as they wish–but we don’t know what the criteria are to be able to enter Dreamland.
I don’t think they need be blood relatives of Arthur–only that, by whatever the rules are, they be a potential king or queen of Dreamland, and in that sense the heir of King Arthur.
That means if Arthur comes back, Alex can never return, right?
No, its the top of the face of the guy from panel #1. In panel #1, the top of his head is hidden
i can agree with everyone here that orion is kind of an insensitive jerk here, the were just trying to make felicity more happy and do a favor for her, what is wrong in that?
Whoops! No sword = no Elf Princess! Guess Alex will watch over it like a hawk from now on! 😀
Umm, I think the only other person that has touched the sword was Nastajia?
Actually, since that rule would also apply to Arthur, it means that since Alex wields the sword, Arthur can’t ever wield it again.
Alex’s mom was not a king of Dreamland. I also get the idea that there is more to this than just handing the sword to someone.
But isn’t rulership of Dreamland a hereditary gig? Nicole’s no relative, as would most any friend he could toss the sword to, and his brother is specificaly blocked from using it. So…?
Haha, uhm…nee hoor. Ik ben al 27. Mijn comic characters zitten op het VWO. 😀 Bedankt voor het bekijken!
I’m not sure it is. We know several kings of Dreamland, including King Solomon and King Alexander of Macedon, including King Arthur. I’m not sure that Israelite, Greek and Celt are related.
Quick Alex… declare Dreamland a republic, then have Dan and Nicole voted onto the council for their role in the battle!
