Page 1268…
Happy Monday, All!
Hope you had a wonderful weekend!
If anyone is going to be in Cookeville, TN this weekend…I’ll be a guest at OmniCon!
I’d love to see some of you come out to this show. Should be a fun little show for me to drive to.

magic armor beats holocaust cloak!
I love the last panel. I’ve read much manga, and the last panel is classic (to me)! Where’s Nic going? He can’t fly away!
Scott: ::rolls D20:: So Alex, Nic misses but you still take half damage. What’s your action?
Alex: I charge!
I love panel two in this. Also… Nic can direct his fire once it left his mouth, that’s pretty nice. It makes a cool curve in the first panel. π
Excellent page, Scott. I especially like panel two, where the fire illuminates Alex’s eyes so that we can clearly see that he is remaining completely calm when dealing with Nicodemus’ breath attack, now, and that he has learned how to control his shield better. The fire effect is well done, and the amount it demonstrates through his entire body language about the maturity he gains is amazing.
Oh, beat me to it about panel two, and I agree with you about panel one, that is pretty neat how he did that.
And there he goes again. “sigh” Not one ounce of strategy in that kid.
It looks like the firebreath is going straight (not curving), but at an angle from Nic’s mouth.
Which doesn’t make much sense.
Pete’s right. The angle just doesn’t look right.
Ghehe,
FWOOSH!
Sorry, had to do that xD
Month, your avatar goes perfectly with your comment!
Heheh, yeah I can actually picture Nastajia saying that! π
To me it looks a bit like he is moving his head while breathing fire.
The direction of the fire does indeed look strange. Correct me if I’m wrong, Scott, but I understand that it shall be interpreted like this:
Phase 1. He breathes fire, straight at Alex.
Phase 2. At the end of the burst, he begins to turn away, as he is going to flee. So what we see is the majority of the fire going straight at Alex, but the tail of it – ie the part closest to Nic’s mouth – has a slightly different angle, since he has already started to turn his head to the right (clockwise if you wish), slightly before he stopped firing (pun intended). Thus it looks like the fire is curved. If we saw this in motion, it would
…probably look perfectly natural. I have a SLIGHT feeling that Scott is SLIGHTY too occupied to create a animated picture for this… π
O.O love the fire in this panel π
Alex had better take off at least one wing. This guy is chickening out WAY too often.
Omigosh omigish I will be at Omnicon too! My husband is one of the guest professors and we’re driving up Friday night.
Whee…Neo vs. Agent Smith, flying around in the rain…
Oops, wrong, er…yeah.
My money says Nic means to lure Alex into a battle with his nightmare cohorts and NOT face him one on one.
And forgive me for looking at panel 3 and thinking, “Alright, let’s see a show of hands. Who’s up for a Stinger missile?”
HADOOUUUKEEN!
Agree with others who have commented – nice flame job! Since Nic only flamed Alex, where he could have taken out quite a few un-protected folks in the courtyard, I’m guessing it was more of a dare thing on his part.
Time for some good old fashioned carvery. Go for the wing joint first, let the long fall tenderize him a bit. May need to use the flat of the blade to help this along. Be sure to crush the larnyx to help keep all the inner heat goodness inside, helps cook it through.
Given dragonhide is quite resiliant you can opt to either skin it now and cook or I prefer to drop in a local volcano for a few hours basting.
Now some folk do argue what to serve with dragon. Red is almost always a good choice.
This reminds me of something…but I can’t put my finger on exactally what…and it’s going to drive me nuts until I figure out what!
Why does NIck keep shooting flame at him when he knows Alex can bring up the shield? Save the energy for when he’s distracted or hurt.
ok i can’t resist any longer Nic is a flamer……. i wonder who’s fwoosh would last longer Nic or Richard from looking for group?
Nick’s not running away. He’s heading to the one place where he and Alex can fight without interference. As he said in the previous page, they are fighting for the crown.
Yay!
I look forward to meeting you both.
i think nicks not used to what he breaths on living probably scared him off. =)
Yep, Nic appears to be on the run, but I suspect he’s luring Alex to a battlefield where the advantage belongs to the dragon…
Yes, red is good with dragon. Unless it’s a white dragon, when the wine should be a frosty-cold white, of course. Such as a Sauvignon Blanc?
This is very reminiscent of the Gandalf vs. Balrog battle. Is this what you were thinking? Because I SURE was!
*ahem* let the agent smith/DBZ jokes begin
Oh and different subject but any chance you’ll be coming to Coneticon this summer Scott?
Heeeey..lookee here, Alex is holding out a stick with some marshmellows..really! Just look at it…
Niice inferno-effect there, with that orange/heat reflecting of Alex’ armour.
I don’t know. But I AM coming to Connecticut for a con in October.
More info soon.
A Kiwi-proof place? We’ve only seen one, indeed. Gotta be crawling with Wraiths by now. Don’t think Nick’s going to play fair when there’s a crown (not to mention a pile of jewellery) at stake.
WOOT! Alex FTW!!!
Go Alex,it’s ur birthday! We’re gnna party like it’s ur birthday!
Kick that slimy dragons sorry butt!!!!
I don’t know about a Surface-to-Air missile, but Nick has sure left his undefended undercarriage open for a belly shot. That may not be where Scott’s going with this, but under any other circumstances it would be a major tactical error.

I didn’t think it looked strange, I just thought perhaps he can direct hs flame the same way smokers can blow smoke out of the side of their mouth. I like your explanation better than mine though, since he has no lips…
Didn’t they just try this a minute ago?
How is it that, every time you do a page, you improve upon the last one? Even if it’s just a small thing, like making the fire look more realistic, or the determined look on Alex’s face.
I love everything about this comic, the story, the facial expressions, the special effects, I mean EVERYTHING.
Keep up the great work, Scott & friends.
typical dragon tactic, blow fire and fly away. catch me if you can!
nice perpective on the 4th panel. π
Love how unfazed Alex is by the flame attack. π Nice.
When Alex takes of his helmet, I’d live to see if there is a black line across his eyes where they are exposed.
Surprisingly, I wasn’t thinking Lord of The Rings…or Harry Potter…I think it has something to do with Dragon Ball Z…Or maybe Inuyasha…I watched both recently *shrug*
Cue apocalyptic choir…
At least that’s what I heard in my mind when seeing this page!
I was wondering for a moment whether the fire actually looked wrong – but somehow it doesn’t. I really think that Nic is either moving his head while breathing it, or that he can direct it at will.
Perhaps he can control it with his tongue?
Beautiful Fire, Scott!
Love the effect of the raindrops on the last panel – motion blurr!
-Nic gets the ol’ angle shot in real sneaky!
Nic’s luring him, I Know it- Alex is simply too stupid (still…) to pass up the opportunity
Okay, love the page. Agreeing with all compliments. One question: What is that gold looking rope on the ground next to Alex, under the flames?
Alex: “Of all the weapons, you want to use a flame war?”
