What is our heroes’ plan from now? For Nic, for the Nightmare realm, and for Alex?
What is Nic’s plan? Does he really intend to hold the symbolic crown? How? What Dreamland peoples are loyal to him?
What use is the sword to Nic? Could Alex really give it to him, even if he wanted to?
Is Nic *evil*, or does he truly care for the welfare of Dreamland? Is he a potential ally?
What does the sword think about this, what is it’s actual authority and power?

Geeeeez… Ol’ Dragon-butt’s somehow a bigger jerk than before, all this kingly posturing he tries to do.
It cracked me up when I read the last pane, because I pictured Nic grabbing his crown and crying, ‘it’s mine, mine, all mine’ like Daffy Duck in the Bugs Bunny episode where they end up in the cave with the huge fortune (as they were on their way to Pismo Beach). Too bad Nic couldn’t shrink to the same size as Daffy did in that episode. Then, if he breathed any fire, it would be just a small flame like that of a cigarette lighter.
Wow… we haven’t seen this side of Nic, burning with rage and anger. He’s scarier than usual. This will be epic!

I’d say that Nic wants the sword given to him because he can’t take it and gain its power/ownership otherwise. I have a feeling that the sword is the instrument of the true king, only a true king may possess it.
Which only makes Nic’s comment further absurd as then the sword is essentially the “crown” of Dreamland.
Nic: You shall not take the crown from me!!
Felicity: This crown? *holds up shiny royal headgear*

Seriously, Nic? You seriously think you can still keep the crown after EVERY species in Dreamland fought against you, and you ADMITTED that you mistreated your own subjects, royals of an entire race, no less?
Since Astoria is the “crown seat” of Dreamland government, perhaps ol’ Nic is referring to the crown he holds in the Nightmare Realm? And where is he wearing the crown of Dreamland, if he holds it? It might make a pretty bauble pressed onto one of his horns…
And Scott? If we hafta wait until MONDAY for the big BOOOOOM!!!! then tomorrow we should REALLY see ol’ Nic get wound up, right?

Great page today! I have to ask. Is it me or does Nic seem to react to Bognok like he’s waaay more of a threat than Alex or Nastajia? And yes, I wonder where the Nightmare realm lackeys are… after all, didn’t their king make a deal with Nic?? Or am I mis-remembering? That can happen when you get old. LOL.
Well, Bognok is quite a few times bigger than the rest of the merry band. And he survived getting thrown over a city wall in a rock. haha 😀 But maybe he addresses Bognok because Bognok taunted him the panel before. He’s just talking back I guess.
What is Nic’s plan? Does he really intend to hold the symbolic crown? How? What Dreamland peoples are loyal to him?
I think this symbolic crown refers to his control overn not just astoria but over the Nightmare Realm. Thats why he says Bognok can never take his crown. As far as Astoria though He’s lost it.
What use is the sword to Nic? Could Alex really give it to him, even if he wanted to?
It mentions somewhere along the story a couple times I think that Nic wants to use the sword to sever the connection between Dreamland and Earth forever. How he can do that exactly I don’t know.
What does the sword think about this, what is it’s actual authority and power?
Well for authority its wielded by kings. That may not say it has authority on its own but I am sure it has alot of respect. As for power, it can slice through anything in dreamland like butter and is one of 3 things we know to travel between worlds so I dont think it could be much more powerful. (3 things: Sword, Bag, Nightmare realm shaman-wizard-lizard.)
That was the impression I got as well.

Actually, if you remember, there is a fourth item that can cross from one realm to the other, at least in theory – the bracelet-talisman thing that Merlin and Arthur created.

Also, don’t forget that Bognok is the only one of this group that has stood toe-to-toe (boot-to-claw?) with Nicodemus.
– Alex got swatted (well, flamed) out of the air pretty easily in Aethos.
– Nastajia’s arrow was casually batted away on the pirate ship. (Or was that at Aethos? I can’t remember now, and I don’t have the time to archive-dive for it right now … )
– Felicity got bashed so hard in Hilmdel that she was nearly killed, and spent weeks (months, in real time) recovering under the ministrations of the centaurs.
So Bognok is the only proven threat to Nick here, as Nick sees it.
Eeep! I can’t wait for the next page, gripping stuff! ^_^

I think he’s not referring to the physical crown, just his rulership over dreamland. As he has said before, people may hate him as long as they fear him. He will just threaten horrible punishment to whoever doesn’t obey him as “ruler” of dreamland.
Not necessarily. Alex has shown he can resist Nico’s fire when he’s in his armor, and maybe he’s learned a thing or two about fighting dragons, as far as Nico knows.

Great job with his facial expression and body in the fourth panel. It truly enhances the effects of Nic’s words right there.
The fact that you need to convince yourself of this Nic is a sure sign that you will soon lose that crown and all that it entails. Hope you liked it while it lasted.
bmonk’s right…PLUS while Alex got flamed out fo the air, you have to remember that he managed to be completely unsinged by that close encounter with Nic’s flames.

Granted, but I’m talking about Nick’s point of view. As he saw it, he flamed and Alex went down; Alex crawled back up over the edge of the cliff, but the fight was essentially over at that point. (In fact, as I recall, Alex might very well have been killed right then and there if he hadn’t woken up. Remember? The Sword disappeared with him, even though Nick was holding it.)

I was referring to the last time Nick and Alex met in battle. Your link, from much earlier, does indeed show that Alex can form a shield. But how many people can he cover with that? Probably not everyone in the room …
