This is the first post? lol
I don’t post here too often, but I have been reading every week at the very least.
Anyhow, this sounds like it might be foreshadowing, or maybe not. One thing is certain, Alex is taking out his frustration at having to grow up too fast on his brother. I wonder how this’ll resolve.
Wonderful job as always!
I don’t know, I think Alex is right this time – sometimes insisting on doing everything ‘the right way’ can become a pretty big hindrance (speaking from experience). Once in awhile, taking a leap of faith and doing something crazy can get you farther than playing it safe. Close your eyes and go for it, Dan!
I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how this resolves, too. π
So very true sometimes you just need a do a leap of faith and see how it comes out. You can’t always be careful or it can get in the way. I try to do things carefully most times but even I am up for a leap of faith at times hehe
I think that is just Scott acknowledging normal human proportions. To prove it get alone for a bit and hold your hand in front of your face with your fingers spread and you should be able to kind of cover your nose and most of your mouth with your palm alone. No comment on the size of Alex’s brain.
I think Alex is commenting on the contrast between his own carefree, unattached, selfish style of life vs. Daniel’s willingness to do (or in this case, not to do) certain things because of principle. Daniel is much better suited to be a “lawful” king than Alex.
LOVE the finger quotes! π But to be fair, Alex, Nastajia would kick both of your cute behinds into the ground because she and her royal upbringing expect a human king to happily charge into battle right here and now. Alex is at least exploring his options, seems like Dan has become a brick wall about the subject.
Huh? What? Since when is Alex selfish? He’s the one that has been attacked by pirates, flamed by a dragon, and generally risked his life for others. Dan, on the other hand, just sits back and nags and generally acts superior without ever putting anything on the line. Thats selfish.
I think Dan is being unselfish in this case, he is also looking after his brother’s interests in not taking the sword now.
Alex is not selfish either, just doesn’t like responsibility, if you look at the very beginning of comic for example he is happy to risk his life to try to stop a giant, and later he risks it to help his friends, etc.
I think Alex is much better than Dan for the upcoming war. Dan would be better at strategy and he’s more logical and cerebral than Alex but Dan is too conservative and fearful of not making the “right choice”. Dan is a good General but the King needs to be decisive and willing to take a risk every now and again, that’s how ancient and medieval wars were won. No one ever defeated invaders and beat overwhelming odds by being afraid to take risks.
I think Alex’s pose in the first pannel is because he is putting on the sword necklace and is messing around with the chain to make it comfortable. That, and i found the last sentice of the last panel to be like “the sword would llloooovvvveee you” XD
Yes: some of the best generals were known for doing “the wrong thing” that caught the enemy off guard, so the plan worked–but had it not been for the surprise, they would have been in deep trouble.
Well, what does Alex expect? The sword may be a sharp character, but it’s a real straight blade. Of course it will shave the razor’s edge of what is correct.
The finger quotes are great! And I’m enjoying it much more now we’re past the wooden Arthur bits, and back with the characters we actually care about.
And Dan is really displaying his conservative side here, verging on chicken-hood. Not looking like king material, really.
Perhaps that’s the point. The kingship requires the qualities of BOTH brothers, both dash and wisdom. How can this be resolved? We’ll stay tuned!
no really, alex’s hands do seem disproportionately large. compare hand size to cheek and finger to nose. one hand should only cover about half the face. or maybe i’m underestimating hand size cause i’m a girl and a guy would have larger hands. hmm. but THAT much bigger? btw, maybe it’s just me but has any one noticed that the last few comics seem to be staaalling? -_-“
LOL, so much dislike of Dan’s policy of cautiousness in the comment section today! I think that the brothers are both equally flawed in their approaches to choices, with Alex’s tendency to think too little and Dan’s to think too much. That said, I identify most with Dan’s style, so I think he’s in the right this time. Dan doesn’t know that he was originally supposed to be king yet (as far as we know). I wouldn’t risk ruining things in dreamworld (or risking my life, for that matter) without some proof it could work.
That said: Scott, the brothers are hilarious these last few pages! I love how… ‘brotherly’ they act, if that makes sense.
What if Dan was -supposed- to be the true king by birth, but the act of pulling it from the stone/altar makes Alex the -actual- true king, regardless of birthright? A kind of spin on the sword in the stone tale, where the one who pulls it free is the rightful king… period.
I keep cringing whenever I hear Dan being referred to as the “true king”… Not sure why exactly. Maybe this is why.
Why is there a shadow on the wall? Is there an other light source somewhere? I find this interesting. Though however.. Keep up the wonderful work Scott! I’ve been hooked on this Web-comic since the day I read it… and i haven’t lost interest once!
The sword has told Alex time and again that he is the true king, no two ways about it. Now, poor Alex is finally facing his shortcomings, and panicking that they will keep him from getting the job done.
Of course he would see reinstalling the ‘king by birthright’ as an honorable way out, but is forgetting some rather important pieces of the puzzle (Like Nastajia? oh yeah, she’d LOVE the swap (not!))
Bmonk, that was so wrong it was right, bravo on all the PUNishment.
I kind of agree with you, I think that Alex IS the true king. I’m not sure if it’s because of the sword, or because of something else. But Orion (?) I think did say in an earlier page that Alex IS king because the sword has named him so.
I think it’s important that Dan could have been King, but because Arthur was trapped in limbo he couldn’t fulfill that potential. But that left the door open for Alexander, who was able to come into Dreamland when Dan couldn’t.
Alex is King because Dan couldn’t be. As opposed to Dan could be King but Alex got there first. (not sure if that makes complete sense or not, it does in my head)
heh, there’s no dislike of cautiousness here. 90% of the time I side with Dan, myself. In this case I’m not agreeing with Alex trying to pass up the throne, just with his saying that too much caution can be just as bad as recklessness.
…mostly I just want to see what would happen if Dan actually made it to Dreamland… regardless of whether it’s ‘the right thing to do’ or not – yeah, there’s the chance that it might screw things up, but who knows – maybe THAT leap of faith will result in something unexpected that works out for the best.
I think both brothers have their strengths and weaknesses, and I’d love to see them working together on this somehow. π
It’s partly the art style and partly actual human proportion, as Stess said. From the heel of your hand to the tip of your middle finger is almost enough to cover your face from chin to hairline. Moreso if you were born in a digital cartoon world and had big cartoon fingers. π

The finger quotes were really funny……………. π

I too enjoyed the finger quotes. I think Dan will make it to Dreamland soon enough, but just not yet.
I like the finger quotes, but it looks like in panels 1 and 3 that Alex’s hands are as big as his head! Has it always been that way?
BTW, no cheap shots about the size of Alex’s brain!

i don’t know why, but the last sentence alex said sounded so creepy to me.
what up with the alex’s pose in the first panel? not sure what he is doing.
What if Dan wonβt give the necklace back after he goes once and learns he is the true king?
I think Alex is commenting on the contrast between his own carefree, unattached, selfish style of life vs. Daniel’s willingness to do (or in this case, not to do) certain things because of principle. Daniel is much better suited to be a “lawful” king than Alex.

Finally caught up! I fell pretty far behind for a while. Still loving the story and can’t wait for more.

And Alex again has a point. Ouch
And admirals. Halsey… π

I totally agree with you, man.
What if Dan was -supposed- to be the true king by birth, but the act of pulling it from the stone/altar makes Alex the -actual- true king, regardless of birthright? A kind of spin on the sword in the stone tale, where the one who pulls it free is the rightful king… period.

I think Alex need a serious one-on-one with the sword and discuss this matter!!
Ok, you used finger quotes once, that’s “enough”.
Why is there a shadow on the wall? Is there an other light source somewhere? I find this interesting. Though however.. Keep up the wonderful work Scott! I’ve been hooked on this Web-comic since the day I read it… and i haven’t lost interest once!
Yeah…one on the desk on other side of room

One can never use finger quotes “too often.” Of course if Alex “always” used finger quotes, he wouldn’t be able to hold onto the “sword.”
Woah! Got carried away with the quotes. There’s no double entendre intended. This is a family friendly comic.
It’s hard to type while doing finger quotes….
heh, there’s no dislike of cautiousness here. 90% of the time I side with Dan, myself. In this case I’m not agreeing with Alex trying to pass up the throne, just with his saying that too much caution can be just as bad as recklessness.

Really, though, as much as I’d love to see Dan go, wouldn’t he have to go through training with Orion like Alex did? I mean, Alex has come pretty far.
Ahh, Bull Halsey..
so, no one is going to say it? ok, I’ll do it.
He he, sword love….
oh okay. lol.
I read the last 3 pages or so and kept thinking to myself… “See That’s why Dan is supposed to be king”. Can’t wait to find out what happens next!
Alex: “The sword would love you.”
Dan: “Uh…we’re getting into a real wierd area here.”
What the heck does that have to do with anything, I wonder…?
Dan: “I’m sorry, Nicole, but I’m leaving you for Alex’s sword.”
