Page 1033…
Well hey. Did you see? We have a new BOOKMARK tool!
It’s right up there above the comic. I don’t know if it’s final. But Tyler and I were discussing a “real bookmark” feel…and there it is!
There’s also some more improvements. Looks like things are cleaning up around here. My horrible fingerprints are almost all gone.
Thanks to Tyler.
๐
Also…
Thanks all who’ve joined up the Facebook page and are helping me track down any problems with Book 4 before it goes to print.
I could still use as many eyes as possible. So please feel free to join in.
Thanks for reading along.
Hope you’ve enjoyed.
And see you all tomorrow for more!
Scott
Monster?! Do not compliment Nick!
He does not qualify as a monster! He is truly less than that….
The lighting on the last panel is amazing!
I’d join the Facebook group and help out Scott, but school is nailing me right now. Need to focus. No doubt many eyes will help make it light and enjoyable work for you tho!
(I will join, when my project presentations are over, and I allow myself to log on to FB again)
Til then my friend! ^.^
~Prince Demitri
Just a note… “aspiring…. for one’s own aspirations” just sounds a bit funny to me. Makes me wonder if “erasing history” is actually part of this “aspiration” that she speaks of since he is apparently aspiring to do so at the moment, or if it is just a means to an end as implied by the phrase “for…”. If erasing history is actually part of this aspiration (ie. end goal) that he’d like to achieve, then what better way than to actually do it? =)
Sorry, if I’m a bit confusing ^^;;
I too love the lighting on the last panel =) Funny colour it makes her hair though XD Now she looks more like a stereotypical elf that is all “eco-friendly green” =P Hmm, what’s that yellow and blue stripe on the log (right hand side, last panel)? Maybe it’s just late and I’m not seeing things properly ^^;;;
He wants to create the illusion that Nicodemus was, is and will be in Dreamland. You get that from mad dictators, people that point out that theirs is the only way there is. If he is able to erase all history and be the ultimate ruler, than he can do whatever he wants, with almost no contest.
What should not have happened is Nastajia talking like that, and showing herself… That was a most unwise move.
You tell him, Princess! I really love the look of the last panel. Well done!
The fact that Nick is so upset, is a clear demonstration that the action was not futile at all.
And now, let the music begin : http://www.televisiontunes.com/Benny_Hill_Show.html
Thank you. I actually toiled for a long time in getting that right.
I wanted to show her “coming out into the light”.
Thank you. I originally had “trying” but it didn’t seem like educated enough.
So I looked up better words.
If you guys have a replacement for that word…I’ll happily change it.
Anything to make Nastajia sound smarter than I am.
๐
Machinating, ploting, scheming.
The word ‘attempting’ could always work. It doesn’t have any particular ring to it, but it sounds smoother.
Nicodemus: “Blasted Elf! Do you know how much these things cost?”
Nastajia: “Futility would be aspiring to erase history for your own aspirations, monster.”
Nicodemus: “You fool! Futility is Resistance! Assimilated be will you!”
I’d use the word “striving” instead of “aspiring” – but I ain no native english speaker so I might misunderstand the subtle differences between those two.
I think, even though it’s a fairly banal word, attempting would sound best in the aspiring position. Honestly, aspirations sounds off, too. Technically, the definition is apt and I understand that it works, but connotations of “aspirations” are so positive. I think ambitions or designs would fit better. They sound so much more derogatory, and I have a feeling that Nastajia has nothing good to even imply about Nic.
I truly hope this doesn’t sound rude. I am trying to help, I genuinely love this comic. Thanks for it!
“Futility would be striving to erase history for one’s own aspirations, monster.” That’s another possible alternative, but I don’t mind it the way you have it currently, Scott.
Weird, I totally didn’t see the comment of the person who posted like 30 minutes before me. lol
shmooov, man. ‘t is cuz I’m sooooo distant. I’m from austria, far over the ocean. ^^
I think if you removed the word “in” from your first sentence, you’d have it about right regarding Nic’s aspirations–to be the be-all and end-all of Dreamland.
What about “aspiring to erase history for one’s own ambitions”? Or “attempting to erase history for one’s own aspirations”?
I like the close-up of the shiny claw.
OK, Scott. I’d like to give you some feedback on pages, and my wife is now one of your facebook friends. Looking at your facebook page, and even the Dreamland Chronicles page, I don’t see a “provide feedback for Chapter 4” section. What am I missing?
Awww. Poor widdle Nicky. Diddums lose something?
Granted I only follow along from time to time on here to catch up, but I am confused what did Nastajia just do? What is the shattered gem thing in Nic’s hand? I went back several pages but still don’t get it.
On the Facebook Page…just click on DISCUSSIONS.
WALL, INFO, PHOTOS….DISCUSSIONS.
You have to go back a LOT further than that to see it. That is the magic amulet that our heroes were originally using to track down the tablets. Here are a few relevant pages (hopefully someone doesn’t beat me to this while I’m typing and archive-diving):
Here is (I believe) the first mention of the amulet and its capabilities: http://thedreamlandchronicles.com/2006/10/12/todays-dreamland-chronicles-240/
Felicity swiped it from Nick’s treasure room here: http://thedreamlandchronicles.com/2007/01/11/todays-dreamland-chronicles-314/
Nicodemus reacquires it here, after Bognok drops it in the shock of learning the truth from the Dwarven tablet: http://thedreamlandchronicles.com/2008/08/07/page-723/
In the next few pages after that, Nic puzzles out the true purpose of the amulet during his monologuing.
The amulet has been mentioned a few times since then, but this [chapter] is the first we’ve seen it since leaving the Dwarves.
…
Don’t forget to VOTE, everyone! http://topwebcomics.com/vote/4274/default.aspx
Gonna jump on the “attempting” bandwagon as well. It’s what jumped into my mind when I started to think about alternative wordings…
She destroyed an amulet that enabled people to find hidden tablets within the homeland of seven races in Dreamland. These tablets contain the history of the human kings of Dreamland before Nicodemus usurped the throne to be king himself. Nicodemus wishes to find them all and destroy them; Nastajia and crew wish to read them,.
Someone’s plans were all just shot up!
I’ll be joining the fb group as soon as I get back to America – fb is blocked in China, or I’d do it now… Give me two months!
Even better: “โattempting to erase history for oneโs own ambitions”
hehe XD
but yeah, I also thought of “attempting” last night as I was wondering if my comments were reasonable…
I just realized that I’ve been missing out on the monologue!
Don’t know if somebody has mentioned it before, but maybe there’s a problem with your RSS feed? I’m subscribed through Bloglines, and I haven’t had an update on your feed since the beginning of February (when you posted the cover of Chapter 15). Anybody else having problems?
I’d love to find out if anyone else has a problem.
I don’t use RSS…but I check it from time to time to see if it’s working.
Anyone?
You naiedl the look of rage of Nicodemus and I too, love the lighting of the last panel. Reveal yourself dramatically, drawing attention away from the other guys so they can run away, or stab him in the back is actually a very smart move. And obviously he would know where your potion is after you shot the arrow. I like the bookmark feature you added. If you really want to change wording in the last panel I suggest “covets” for “aspirations.”
“nailed” sorry about that.
Anything but “aspiring to aspire” will seem more educated simply because of the redundancy.
I have to agree with other people here: the lighting in the last panel is amazing.
And now for something unrelated: do elves live forever in Dreamland as well? Or are they just like humans in terms of lifespan? If they do live longer than humans or if they live forever – doesn’t Alex’s and Nastajia’s relationship lead to problems for both of them (apart from the obvious facts, of course)?
Ok. I changed it. Thanks all!
I follow the RSS feed on My Yahoo, and it’s been working just fine for me. I see the updates every day. Can’t say how that compares to Bloglines as I don’t use that.
On the matter of Stajia’s statement, I think it’s just perfect the way it now is, with “attempting” and “ambitions”. “Attempting” may not be the most brainy type of word she could have chosen, but I think anything more hifalutin’ would just make her sound like she’s trying too hard to showcase a large vocabulary. As it stands it draws the reader’s attention to the word “ambitions”, where it should be, giving that word the full stinging impact it is meant to carry.
I’ve been wondering that myself. Just how “immortal” are elves in Dreamland, and how does that affect the relationship between Nastajia and Alex?
I suspect that their lifespans are much longer than that of a human, but I doubt immortality – at least for the context of this story, anyway. Seeing as though the interpretations of the tablets were meant to be (and have been) handed down from one generation to the other, it would imply that the elves do die naturally of old age.
Definitely not immortal. But longer than humans.
yes, all those poor, insulted monsters ๐
Scott, you overwrote today’s page with tomorrow’s page. Whoops!
Once the arrow hit their position was known anyway.
I’m getting the updates just fine on Google Reader.
๐
Also, I suspect you meant “position” rather than “potion”, but that’s okay …
๐
I’ve been thinking about Nicodemus and his attempt to erase history. Easier tried than done, especially in a magical realm like Dreamland. After all, if magic can resurrect the dead–or even just allow the living to talk to them, the past people can always tell the present generation how things were. Similarly, if travel in time is allowed like travel in space (teleporting), or viewing the past like viewing far away places (scrying), even destroying the tablets would not permanently keep them from being read.
I fail :(. You’re right, I need to be more careful in my comments.
Don’t sweat it. “Potion” is, of course, a real word, so spellcheckers won’t catch it.
And as it happens, I was proofreading a paper for a friend of mine yesterday, a Doctorate level paper, and he made the exact same misspelling. So you’re in good company …

“There will be no glory in your sacrifice. I will erase even the memory of Sparta from the histories! Every piece of Greek parchment shall be burned. Every Greek historian, and every scribe shall have their eyes pulled out, and their tongues cut from their mouths. Why, uttering the very name of Sparta, or Leonidas, will be punishable by death! The world will never know you existed at all!”
“The world will know that free men stood against a tyrant, that few stood against many, and before this battle was over, even a god-king can bleed.”
argh! curse you elves and your annoying glowing toothpicks!!
what is in his hand jeweler and fake nails and all that girly stuff
