Wiki….
I don’t use Wikipedia. I have no use for it.
But people seem to always ask why I don’t have a Wiki page for Dreamland.
The answer is. I tried. I submitted it. Did all the work for it….and that was a year ago.
Nothing happened.
I see all of these other webcomics up there…and wonder….”is there a secret to it?”
So…if anyone has an idea of how to do it. I’d love to know.
Not for me…but for the people who keep asking me…
😛
Oh…and BACK TO DREAMLAND!!!!
YAY!
Let’s just say, it needs A LOT of information. That, and it needs a cover image (of volume 1 at top of page maybe), an in-depth summary, maybe a page or two of examples, and links to all dreamland-related websites. Maybe someone could make one for you?
It has to meet the standards of “relevance.” There is currently a war against webcomics on Wiki right now though. Don’t hold your breath.
I never understood the point to a Wiki for a webcomic anyway.
There really is no trick to it; however, the creator is usually the least welcome person to write the article on wikipedia. If anyone asks about a wikipedia page, just tell them to write it themselves.
In fact, in the last few minutes, someone has put a stub up for it; so there you go.
While Wikipedia is often a pain in the butt about relevance, you should qualify for relevance by virtue of having your published volume 1. They generally have a point about webcomic pages generally just being more advertisements, not really useful information, but if you’ve got a book that is in retail stores, claiming irrelevance is…stupidity.
As stated, you’re the least welcome person to edit that page, especially with a lot of the current controversies over other conflicts of interest, so let some of your fans put up all the information. To whomever wishes, be sure to include as much stuff as possible to meet Wikipedia’s relevance standards.
Sorry, I meant Wikipedia’s notability criteria. Mention things like awards and such that dreamland’s gotten, etc.
Wikipedia seem to have been getting rid of a lot of webcomic entries lately, a lot of existing ones have been removed
first, i agree fully with squeeself about how ridiculous it is the way wikipedia is cracking down on webcomics with tens of thousands of readers if not more, claiming ‘they are not notable’ – i’ll tell you what this is about. some internet nerds whose only notable achievement in life is their status as high-ranking wiki editors, and their measly bit of power. this is akin to when you work at a convenience store and your 18 year old manager gives you grief over small things bc it’s the first time in his/her life that he/she’s had any power of any kind…and until then had always felt powerless.
second, the stub is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dreamland_Chronicles
dear dr. scott (heehee), please re-post that link into a regular posting of yours? people need to add to it quickly or it will be deleted. what would be best is if you’d email me or someone else here what you submitted a year ago so that we can use that content for a base. i understand that it’s no biggie for you, but it would be easier for us to do a good job of it if we had your text to start out with…thanks for sharing your awesome art with us!
Consider starting with an entry at Comixpedia instead.
http://www.comixpedia.org/
The fiddlers at Wikipedia will no doubt copy the information from there once you’ve cleared some arbitrary grade of public noteworthiness.
Hmmm… how ironic. I just read Lem’s rant over on “Bunny” about the whole Wikipedia vs webcomics. It seems a bit silly to me, I would think for an encyclopedia the more information and entries the better.
Thank you all. WHat great advice.
To answer some questions…and ask a few more…
1) There is a Dreamland Chronicles Comixpedia article. I did that last year as well.
2) Should Dreamland be under Book? Instead of or in addition to webcomic as suggested?
3)Am I simply not allowed to edit this because it’s mine?
Wikipedia is nice, but something like this should have it’s own wiki, it would allow you to list all the locations in dreamland, all the characters and biographies for them all, i doubt wikipedia would give you all that, the only way to beat wikipedia’s relevence policy is to have everyone make their own, then someone else make a wiki of all the personal wikis out there on the web. You should look into setting that up.
Here’s my best advice: Read the Wiki article on relavance/notability relating to webcomics. I was part of the discussion that ended in The Noob to be permanently deleted and blocked from recreation. Being published apparently doesn’t make you notable enough. If I remember, you had to also be mentioned by several “credible and notable” sources in publishing. The rules are really vague, and the people who are crusading against webcomics know how to twist them to their advantage. You need to know the rules, be able to quote why Dreamland meets them, and be ready for a fight. But like the others said, make sure you aren’t the one doing to fighting.
Thank you Ray and Sheora.
Great advice.
In answer to 3, you are allowed to create and edit the article, but it’s often frowned upon. It’s akin to someone posted an article about themselves. If something really is notable, other people that don’t have a direct interest in it will eventually post content, which is much preferred. Of course, if there’s an article about yourself or your work that has incorrect information, please, fix it.
Scott doesn’t use wikipedia because he knows everything. Why should be bother looking up stuff he already has knowledge of? 🙂
You see….I KNEW you were going to say that.
😛
You’ve won official comics-type awards now, yes? That should make you “notable” for Wikipedia purposes, assuming the anti-webcomics brigade hasn’t completely taken over by now….
