Stardust…
So…I’ve never done a movie review here.
But my wife and I saw the movie Stardust last night and it was really great.
I read the book years ago and I can honestly say…I liked the movie better than the book.
I’m a real grumpy movie watcher. Poor Donna’s always listening to me complain about this writing, or that directing and what not.
But I honestly had fun with Stardust.
So if you’ve not seen it. Rent it and have a magical night.
It’s a fun fantasy movie.
Scott
PS. Not for kiddies. It’s in no way obscene. But it is a bit bloody (comedic) and some sexual references and what not.
I saw that movie a few months ago with a friend and we both loved it. Stardust is now one of his favorite movies (he bought it the day it came out on DVD), which is saying a lot for a 20-year-old who is very loyal to his sci-fi books and usually can’t stand when someone changes a lot. I have yet to read the book, but I might be able to borrow it from my sister. It’s a really good movie.
Weird. I just saw that movie for the first time on Christmas eve and really liked it, too.
Yeah, I saw the movie and then went out and bought the book. Normally I’m one of those people who always says that the books are always better. Well Stardust proved that statement false. I was unimpressed with the book simply because of the lack of action in it. There was a lot of trotting to places and that’s about it.
Whew! I’m glad I wasn’t the only one.
🙂
It’s been years since I read the book. But I think I remember a wedding…and a lot more time spent with Victoria.
Also. I think seeing Robert De Niro as a “dandy’ pirate was actually really fun. He seems like a really cool guy.
Hahaha, My brother actually bought Stardust for me for Christmas and my whole family just sat down to watched it last night. My brother’s opinion is that it will be a new cult classic, and so far I have to agree. It’s really funny, even the most serious parts are full of humor. I actually saw a guy with curly red hair and a red goatee and thought “Aww, poor Bernard.”
Awwww, I was really excited for the movie to come out because I loved the book so much! I agree that the movie was really good, but I still loved the book more. You should get the original graphic novel edition of it, illustrated by Charles Vess. The paintings are absolutely stunning, and they really add to the feel and color of the story. Of course, I absolutely prefer dry British humour, which helps me love the book even more than the movie, but I totally agree that DeNiro’s performance is stellar!
stardust is a classic fantasy movie (like legend!) – very well done, all the actors suited their roles and i agree that it will continue to entertain for a long time. my one criticism, i thought it ended a bit abruptly…short wedding scene and blammo! they’ve transformed to stars again.
saw the golden compass the other day and really liked it too, but it’s more glitz and less magic.
My first post here since I’ve been reading this wonderful comic.
Stardust is indeed a wonderful movie, book bad yea we know. Same with Lord of the rings; movies = good; books = bad
many books our nowadays turned into movies.
maybe there will be a movie of The Dreamland Chronicles,
hope so! and Scott try to have it exactly as this comic then ’cause most movie directors give their own twist to it … and most of the time NOT good!
keep up the good work Scott
your doing great!!
Jens, How can you say that the Lord of the ring books are bad!? They are one of the most artistic and creative books in history of novels! I have do say i really disagree with you there.
But i guess it’s a matter of opinions. I’m a book person, And it’s really hard going with me in the movies and snort in boredom or me complaining. The book was horrible, But the movie was so-so, It’s perhaps fun to watch, But I’d forget it like in a snap after i watched it.
Woa, i must say, i too am a person that has to complain alot while in movies, mostly artistic or logical issues though, like “wtf thats a 3D render” or “how can that happen, thats so nonsense!” or whatever. Probably a reason my friends rarely go to the cinema with me cuz i keep complaining everytime. Stardust is one of the movies i really enjoyed as well and didnt have alot to complain about. I never read the book though.
truly. the LOTR was wonderfully written, and though peter jackson did an excellent job in portraying the story on film, the film did not outdo the books. it’s rare when it happens, as with stardust. but to go on with the controversy, i thought the film dune was better than the book! and dune’s a classic as well! hehe, so flame away!
Hrefna, I have to disagree with you, LOTR are neither the most creative or artistic of books, however they are good books, and they revived fantasy, without which the world would be a worse place.
Also, hey everyone this is my firsty post here, brilliant comic, and it also updates plenty, which I like
Hi Tim
Hi Jens!
Welcome and thanks for the kind words.
As to the other posts…hm.
Honestly I LOVED The Hobbit. But could never get into the LOTR books.
The movies on the other hand. WOW.
I’m not saying movies are better than books.
I’m just saying Stardust was one of the first movies I liked better than the books (though I never got through the first 100 pages of LOTR…so I can’t compare)
I do have both the book and the graphic novel of Stardust. THough I haven’t read the graphic novel yet.
I am SOOO opinionated with movies though…ha ha. I may just start posting more often.
As long as no one gets offended. Or arguments get too heated.
I (sadly) have yet to see the Stardust movie – but I absolutely loved the book. Neil Gaiman is one of my new favorite authors. With reviews like this, I’m excited to see it! My friend and I will have to get it and watch it… Movie night! 🙂
I just had to put my two cents in on the LOTR discussion, since I adore both the books and the movies. But for different reasons. Tolkien just gets so absorbed in the complexities of his fantasy world that he overloads the reader with details. As an aspiring fantasy writer, these details and the depth to the world are mindblowing to comprehend. Tolkien was a linguist, and the whole thing started with the Sideran language and the world grew around it. The movies do a great job of portraying the beauty and complexity of Middle Earth without delving farther than the average reader/viewer wants to go.
In short, the movies showcase the plot and characters beautifully, whereas the books are the best testament possible to the wonderfully complex world of Middle-Earth.
wow… I got kinda carried away there…
P.S.: Dreamland’s looking great! It’s one of my favorite webcomics and it never fails to put a smile on my face after a rough day!
Good movie but i got a question.. What’s that he’s holding anyway????
Tolkien created modern fantasy, and without LotR, most of the stuff we Fantasy fans read now would not even exist. I personally prefer the Hobbit as a novel, but there’s no denying that LotR is a greater achievement. Tolkien’s world is so utterly real you can almost imagine being there, with its vast history and scope.
Jackson took the magic of the books and brought them to life on film. They’re fairly faithful and he improved on some of the characterisation but I’d say they lost too many of the songs and tales and too much of the history to truly compare.
The films are superb – especially the extended editions (Well worth getting to anyone who has not seen them) – but the books are still better.
Nearly forgot – one film that absolutely improves on the original novel is The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe. I have high hopes for Prince Caspian, too.
Especially Reepicheep the psycho-mouse, who was always my favourite Narnia character 😀
Wow!
I actually just rented Stardust (before seeing this little review) and now I look forward to watching it even more! 🙂
I liked both the Stardust movie and book, with a preference for the movie. The book did a wonderful job of showing that the land on the other side of the Wall is a land where everything has a story, but the movie had better pacing and action.
By the way, this is my first post. I love Dreamland, keep up the good work.
I really loved the movie. It was a great love story. I loved the part where Robert Deniro played a cross-dressing Sky Pirate. I couldn’t believe it! lol That made the movie even better. I’d compare it to Princess Bride a great love story year after year.
I LOVE STARDUST! I just got it for my folks for Christmas, and I’ve watched it more than they have, heh. They hadn’t seen it though, and the first time we watched it they really seemed to like it.
omg i just saw it too! i loved it sooo much!! ^_^
Hey I love reading your comic and I hope you don’t mind but I drew a picture of Alex and I hop you’ll take a look at it when you have the time. It’s not the greatest but I hope to do another one when I get better!

A unique discussion might be priced at comment. I’m sure that you should generate more on the following topic, may possibly not be a taboo theme but generally people are too little to speak in such themes. To the next. Kind regards
