Page 1521…
Happy Wednesday!
Sorry for the slight delay.
As you can see… Excalibur was lying up against the pillar the whole time.
My apologies if you couldn’t see it for the first 6 pages.
As I mentioned in the comments… my family speaks a lot with their hands. So… my characters do too.
π
Thanks for reading.
Scott
Ha ha ha! Of course Nicole would be the brains. But Dan’s not too far behind.
Hey… Heh… First.
Oh, Alex-slam! But they’re kind of selling Nastajia short, here. π

“You know we’re going to have to be the brains of this outfit… right,” asked Dan as he casually picked up Excalibur from where it was resting on Nicole’s porch.
*head asplode*
Wait…If they’re at Nicole’s house, why is she leaving with Dan? It’s night time!
Maybe just walking him down the stairs or to the sidewalk?
Heh!
Does anyone else notice how inhumanly large the swords are? Could you actually wield something that’s almost as tall as you are?
Huh. Well, kingship doesn’t seem to be that important to Dan. I’ll be very surprised if he and Alex have any kind of conflict about that. Dan seems pretty content on the sidelines.
This is a response to xpacetrue from yesterday’s comic:
One minor correction on your post: Dan and Alex aren’t necessarily Arthur’s decendants. I believe Scott has verified for us that the heirs to the throne of Dreamland are selected by some other method than geneology. There’s also a reference in chapter 15 of the “first born of the generation” as heir.
Additionally, Dan was selected (however that may be) as the “rightful heir” to the Dreamland throne, but could not enter Dreamland because Arthur was being held in some sort of stasis that kept him from officially dying (heirs cannot enter Dreamland while the present ruler still reigns according to Dreamland law). Alex could visit Dreamland every night just like any other child because he wasn’t the heir. However, he was able to draw/inherit the Sword of Kings by virtue of being Dan’s twin. It’s implied on this page that he had to be a twin to activate the succession “loophole.” Just being a younger brother might not have been enough…which also goes to show that the decendant/relative-as-heir concept doesn’t apply here.
You know…I halfway wonder if that’s part of why Niviene was so adamant about Alex abdicating in favor of his brother. Apparently the “rightful heir” is selected in some way that has nothing to do with genetics (but does have something to do with first-born), so for Alex to sit on the throne in spite of Dreamland’s law of succession might seem a bit offensive to her. True, an usurper sat on the throne for ages…but Nic was working the system to prevent a true human king from challenging his right to the throne. The people of Dreamland haven’t had their true, rightful king for a long time. This is their first chance to revert to the laws of the land.
Sorry about the long post…just had an a-ha! moment about Niviene’s reactions and behaviors. π
Well, the Sword of Kings is magic (no real sword could slice through a castle wall without trouble or turn into a necklace when you’re not sleeping), so I imagine that’s how the weight concerns would be handled (pun not intended).
For Excalibur…well, long-swords were used back-in-the-day, but I believe they had to be weilded with two hands due to their weight. I’m sure someone knowledgable about weaponry will make an appearance and clarify on this. π
At some of the the Scottish Highland Games near where I live, they sell six foot swords. My brother almost bought one, but opted for a four foot sword instead. I’m no expert, but Claymores were really big swords used in battle. Like six foot swords. I’m pretty sure they were two handed, like Greatswords.
Dan is my favorite character π I’m so happy for him and for Nicole and for everyone π squee.
It’s not as heavy as it looks.
I got several 2 and 2.5-handers (practical, sharp! Ones) and they aren’t as heavy as people assume. Dan is pretty sturdy, and should have no problem lifting a well-balanced sword.
The only rΓ©ally heavy swords are classic (blunt) Flamberges meant for parading. They are ri-di-culous! And in nΓ³ way practical.
*shuffles embarassed back after out-nerding for a bit*
*1,5-handers obviously* grrmbll… >.<
I…am…. giggling. π
I’m more concerned at how flat it looks. The sword should have SOME girth. I’m thinking that’s just an effect of the cgi, but is it really that flat?
Thanks, you guys, for all the great input. π
But nerding-out is fun! π
Good thoughts. The only reason Nicodemus could usurp the throne was because Arthur was still there to sort of hold it in reserve. No other kings could exist in Dreamland as long as Arthur did. I like the idea that it took someone as close to the true king as a twin to free the sword and ultimately release Arthur, opening Dreamland back up to its chosen line of rulers.
And, of course, it’s a lot easier to just haul a sword around than it is to wave it in actual battle.
Am I the only one that thinks that Dan is going to get attacked by something on the way home because he now has a sword? no? ok…nevermind.
*raises hand slowly*
Honestly I’m getting tired of Alex getting the short end of the stick. Dude does all the heavy work of leading and coming up with plans on the fly. Alex deserves more praise especially with how he’s being picked on by everyone…
Okay, how will Daniel explain the sword to his folks?
Should democracy be introduced to Dreamland?
Whoa! BlueStar nailed it! Oh, noes!
Are you kidding? Alex gets all the praise! He’s the warrior hero. π He has hordes of fans that wanted to rip Niviene to pieces!
There’s no way for Alex to get the short end of the stick…he gets DREAMLAND!
Plus, neither he nor Dan can read the comments, so it’s all good. π
You’d be surprised.
Go to a museum that has some medieval weapons. The smithys of “old” were vΓ©ry good.
The “thick” swords usually seen, are cheap, stainless steel replica’s, mostly from Pakistan and China. The better – functional- ones, Han Wei, Cold Steel, are quite thin and fairly flexible (Γ‘nd expensive!)
Democracy in Dreamland…an interesting concept. I’m not sure it could be done if the leader always has to be a human. Hmm.
Oh no! Looks like have to think up a new plot line. XD
Dibs on shadows.
Really? AWESOME. SO EXCITED.
It probably says bad things about me that I like it when characters get into danger and have to escape. I like it anyway. π
“It’s for the Medieval Club at school.”
“Oh, I didn’t know there was a Medieval club! how exciting!”
*phew, she bought it. Let’s hope Alex doesn’t blow my cover*
Can’t wait till tomorrow!
