As touching as this reunion is about to be, it occurred to me in the last few days, that our favorite author is actually a big meanie! For each of the main characters who gets a chance to see again their human friend from childhood, there are probably thousands (upon thousands?) of Dreamlanders who never will know whatever happened to those children who used to visit when they were dreaming… for as far as I know, there is no gradual weaning from Dreamland: you either visit it in your dreams, or you get to be old enough that you simply stop coming. For the human, he will go on, and eventually probably forget all about Dreamland, keeping perhaps a fond feeling about “something” about their dreams from the past, but nothing more than a general feel-good feeling about their youth. Meanwhile, the Dreamlanders who used to play with them will have to accept the fact that their friend was suddenly too old to come, and will never be seen again. How harsh! Not a word, no warning, no news from them later. Nothing!
In fact, I think this is specism: you are pandering to the feelings of your human readers, while being totally oblivious to the feelings of the countless Dreamlanders who never get to see their friends grow up, and who never hear from them again!
So while it’s nice to see that Felicity now gets her chance at seeing Nicole all grown up, and we’re supposed to feel all mushy and teary eyed and such, I’m calling you out, Scott:
You, sir, are a big meanie!
(Of course, I mean that in the nicest way possible… 😛 )
And no, I do not intend to redeem this comment by talking about how enjoyable the story is, so far, and how hooked I am. No siree, not gonna do it! You won’t hear a peep more out of me. I’m done talking, so that I don’t accidentally let out that I really love the story and its intricacies. Not gonna happen. No. Not me.
While I’m enjoying the tear jerking, I’m looking forward also to Dan seeing Alex in that armor and then saying ‘Dude! What the heck are you WEARING??!!’
Aren’t these ladies a bit too fast to recognise each other after their last meeting as kids? It takes me a while in such cases. Granted, it’s been much longer since I’ve met anybody when a kid, but nevertheless they’re real fast at that. (Or is it me being real slow?)
Oh, and once I’ve mentioned recognition… it only takes a click on the TWC icon to the right of the strip to vote. We’re holding #5 for now with 12,010 votes, #4 having 20,425. Probably #5 will be it for this month, but hey, a month ago The Dreamland Chronicles weren’t even in the top ten.
Keep your votes coming, fellow Dreamies. Keep your votes coming.
I see your point, but I think you have to take into account the circumstances as well. It’s not a random encounter on the street. Nicole knows she’s looking into Dreamland, so grown up kitty face should be an easy logical jump. It’s exactly who Alex knows she wants to see. Felicity doesn’t know she’ll be looking into the real world, but she knows what humans look like and it’s an easy leap that if they thought it was vitally important for Alex to drag her somewhere to see a grown up black female face with somewhat familiar features….then it’s Nicole. The circumstances make it a more logical rapid identification than just a random encounter with a vaguely familiar face.
Given that I’ve only been reading this since December (and still working through all the comments), I can only image how this moment is for those of you who have been with the project for years.
But I wonder if this is the only reunion Nicole and Felicity will have? Will they get a chance to really meet? Or is this one silent view of each other all that will ever be for them?
However, given how much of the story remains to be told, I’m sure it’s plenty of time for someone important to be kidnapped to the Nightmare Realm and need rescuing by Dreamlanders and Our-Worlders.
Coincidentally, along with reading TDC, I have been recently reading a relatively new webcomic called Power Nap. It takes place in some future where, as a means of increasing workplace productivity, the developed a drug that allows a person to be awake 24/7 with almost no ill effects. Enter Drew. He’s the 0.0001% of the population allergic to the drug. And Drew is noticing things. Seems in a world where people no longer sleep, perchance to dream….the dreams are getting pissed off.
your telling me that alex looked for the pirate ship, grabbed ferclity, fought sea serpents and got back to same spot as the cave underwater in that short spend of time? wow, superhuman alex.
that reminds me, what happened that thing flying in the air in the pirate ship scene?
Out of curiosity, how did Felicity transform? If Alex went and got her, were there merfolk standing by in the water, or was Alex able to transform her while he’s in merman form?
Ahem… you BOTH should! ;-D
That was dropped April 7th… 2007 ! It was a comment on TDC official forum to page # 373, by signature antiphon. Link here: http://4thwall.240gl.org/viewtopic.php?p=2556#2555
Maybe. Yet, I bet that it still took a couple of seconds, and were I Scott, I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to show their faces while their brain wheels were turning full speed collecting pieces of the puzzle.
A shorter version of it is this. The fact that Nicole and Felicity get to meet up at first looks very sweet on Scott’s part, but actually exposes the fact that most people in Dreamland never get to have such a reunion and are left hanging when a child suddenly becomes to old.
For humans, they can easily forget about it because they convince themselves that dreams aren’t real, but for Dreamlanders, this seems like a cruel thing for Scott to subject them to without a final goodbye.
*Not my opinion, just a shorter version of Jake’s.
Felicity’s face isn’t that much different from how she looked as a child, and her overall characteristics, like physical color pattern, has stayed, as well, which should have made it easier for Nicole (especially when told their was something special for her, then seeing a cat person).
As for Felicity, it could be that she is just in awe, currently, at seeing a glimpse into our world in general, as well as seeing Nicole and Dan.
It would behoove you to read the whole content of a post, before actually criticizing it… Had you done so, you would have understood about my discourse that:
A) Scott is being very nice to Felicity (and we all say “Awwwww” at the occasion), but is a big meanie towards all other Dreamlanders who will probably never get the chance to ever see their childhood friend again, once said friend is too old to come to Dreamland at night
B) If the worst I can accuse Scott of is that of being a “Big Meanie”, I must not be all that upset at him
C) The last paragraph is a backhanded way of saying just how much I like this comic, but am pretending to not say so, in order to not contradict the previous paragraphs
Those are the Cliff notes, the whole post is much more complete. Too bad you felt it not worth reading.
Scott? In case it wasn’t clear: I love your comic, don’t change a thing!
Oooooooooooo. Pretty much sums it up.
sums what up?
oh OK
NVM i get it now
The cutest Felicity face!
uh… hi!
I’ve been looking forward to this. 🙂
I can tell from your avatar’s smile.
I think those are the widest eyes we’ve seen on her so far!
Those eyes in the last panel! Nailed it!
She must see a giant ball of yarn. 😛
So now Felicity is a catfish…
Too late I’m afraid, that joke was already told yesterday. 🙂
Yay!
AAWWWWWW!! (thunderous applause!!)
I hope they’ve got a good grip of Fel to keep her from trying to dive into the Pool to reach Nicole…

Incidentally, I’m surprised she went all the way into the cave without noticing this big glowing circle…
Agreed!
Gah! It’s still tense because I’m not seeing them really interact with each other! Now I have to wait until tomorrow for that. 🙁
I know…I’m needy. 😛

Now to show Felicity and Nicole…!

It’s not everyday that you get to come face-to-face with your dream. Thanks for making a kitty happy. 🙂

Yup,probably gonna slip out of their grips and hit her head on the cave ceiling.

Scott stated yesterday that Niviene gave Alex something to turn both he and Felicity into merfolk.
It was merfolk spit, wasn’t it? Concentrated, undiluted mer-spit.
** WIN **

Funny: I try to write a summary, but it ends up taking almost as much space as the original…
That’s diarrhea of the keyboard, for you… 😛
And? It was still told yesterday…
Your all to late I made fan art during Felicity’s first trip underwater, reflecting that joke.
